1. ok so I've just had confirmation that the 2 tone sunburst Jazzes in question were just faded 3 tones. So I guess you cant believe everything you see/read. It's been interesting chasing this up today though as I hadn't looked into it before. I managed to ask 2 people who have these '2 tone' basses in theyre posession and both have confirmed that there is evidence of red in the neck/control cavities! still could of possibly been some custom orders I guess...but we will probably never know! any way back to this being a build thread......soon
2. they did do the same thing then, but there would be traces of the red on bass side under the guard by the neck pocket. it was only the lower horn part they missed out. It is very true what WOT says about the fred fading, and this was particularly true of the 1959 first run of the 3 tones. However by 1960 Fender had realised that the colours were fading and by mid 1960 they had come up with a replacement red. So having realised that the red would of fade pretty quickly they may of just used 2 tone bursts on a few basses until they had the replacement. just a thought....
3. Indeed! Maybe this could be worthy of some extreme investigation. Might be able to write a book about it
4. I've emailed them asking if the will remove the pickguard and send pictures to see if theres any traces of red there. I'm not 100% convinced myself still so will be interesting to see if they come back. I'd like to think it was possible to have the colour combination! I shall keep you posted WOT
5. heres a specialist vintage store in America who have one for sale http://www.premierguitar.com/Gear/Guitars/.../Jazz_Bass.aspx
6. It wasw only on the Swamp Ash bodies that the finish existed. theres a very very knowledgeable and extremely amazing builder from Israel called Gil Yaron. He makes some of the most accurate Pre CBS style guitars. He spent a long time in California as a vintage repair man. he also believes that they did exist in very small numbers out of the factory and has actually made one if you want to see what one looks like heres the link. 7. I have only seen one picture of a 2TS and read a couple of accounts that a very small number left the factory in very early 1960. Still not concrete I guess but I think it wouyld of been more than feasable, especially if ordered as a custom finish.
8.
Sounds good, best of luck to you. May I ask though?...weren't the 60's Fenders made with Alder instead of Ash? I may very well be wrong, but never seen an Ash 60's body.
there were a limited amount of swampash bodied jazz basses made in 1960/61. these basses had either a blonde finish or the very very rare 2 tone sunburst. but yes the majority of pre cbs jazz basses were alder. heres an example of a blonde one http://bestguitars.com/Best_Guitars/Basses_for_sale.html
9. So some of you may of read my post in the general discussions page. I am about to start building 2 projects. the first of which I will be starting this thursday (4/02/10) will be a replica of a 1960 stack knob J style bass. The second will be an early 60's P style bass. I have spend a very large amount of time researching the pre-cbs build and tooling methods, materials and processes that went into creating what are now regarded as some of the finest and most innovative instruments in the world and now feel confident that i can recreate them with pride and above all respect for the man that set the standard! I plan to recreate these processes where possible and also use period correct materials (again, where possible). so here is the spec for the Jazz bass: 2 piece light Swamp Ash body finished in blonde nitrocellulose laquer, correct router hump, pin dowels, pickup placement, lazy susan nail holes etc Rock Maple neck (hard) medium profile Slab Brazillian Rosewood fingerboard 7.25" radius, clay dots sideway installed vintage fretwire vintage reproduction Capacitors CTS pots - Swithcraft jack - cloth wiring - shielding plates etc Full celluloid Tortoise shell 4 ply pickguard Bareknuckle handwound J pickups Gotoh vintage hardware - lightly aged I will make the truss rods myself as the vintage correct size are not available off the shelf this build may take a while to complete as a) I want to do the first one with minimal mistakes and I have to make all the templates/jigs etc as I go along and I have a full time job as well as being a session bassist so don't get much spare time! so until thursday when i shall embark on this build, thanks for reading! also thanks also to Graeme (headofire), Howard (the bass doc) and Jim (99ster) for providing me with dimensions from their beautiful original basses! STAY TUNED! Wes
10.
Haha! The Nash's I saw at V&R didn't have any decals on the headstock, but that was a year ago maybe. The Gallery have a Fender logo'd Nash, and Clarky's Nash has a logo. Magical indeed! Are you going to include such small details as the router hump in your relic builds? Si
yes will have router hump, correct pin dowels, reproduction caps etc. I will be making the truss rods myself (you cant buy vintage correct size rods any more). finger boards are going to be brazillian rosewood, sideway installed vintage frewire, clay dots (will not be the same as original clay dots as the material fender used is no longer available) full nitrocellulose paint jobs, cellulose gurads pickups on the first batch will be bareknuckles however im going to make/wind my own eventually I'm excited about it all
11.
Period correct pens in pocket too?
haha. of course I already have the belt and trousers...any one where i can get the shirt!?
12.
Very good! It'll sell more with the Fender logo on though lol Nash & Bravewood know it Good luck with it though, sounds really interesting, and because Bravewood isn't going anymore, you could have a market open to you Si Disclaimer: Not that Nash or Bravewood have EVER made a guitar with a fender logo
Haha, Yeah thats the plan. my website is being made at the moment. I'm going to doing custom stuff too. just trying to build it up slowly. I reckon the fender decals must magically appear on them..Im suprised vintage and rare havnt had a call from fender about the nash' they have in there with fender decals!
13.
Yeah right! 99ster on here has a 1960 Jazz! Si
haha...Its going to get my name on it! I'm proud of the instruments I make
14. Hello all! bascally I'm about to start building a 1960 stack knob jazz bass to exacting details (apart from a fender logo). I really need to get some measurements off of an original instrument (1960 - 65) as the Fender RI's don't have the correct pickup placement measurements etc. If anyone owns one and would be kind enough to allow me to take the measurements I need I would be extremely grateful and theres a drink in it too! I'm going to be doing a build thread for this build so everyone can see how it goes. I will be using period correct tooling and materials (where possible) so should make an interesting build! please PM me if you can help me! thanks Wes
15. they look interesting. whats everyones views on the new C shap neck profiles? I'm just wondering if it's going to put off existing warwick players who have grown to love the old style profile.
16. Hi there. Wes here from GAK, Brighton. We currently have a 44-01 in stock. I can't remember which colour at the moment as I'm at home but give either me or mark a call tomorrow if you are interested. delivery time is next day although because of the snow it's roughly 2 days at the moment. wes
17. Incredible little amp. I recently swapped my markbass rig out for an Aguilar gear. Best move i ever made in terms of amps. good luck with the sale!
18.
What are this band feeling so guilty about???? Chris martin seems obsessed with charitys,i know it sounds a bit off but i think this is a bit strange.
Or maybe they've got so much money they just want to help out some other people who need it more than them...or maybe it secures them a slot on the next live aid?
19. I've seen him using the cutless II for sledgehammer at rehearsals at realworld. incredible sound!
20. this is beautiful! hopefully my tax rebate will be here before this goes!
21. the cabs are very good. They are an upgrade of the ZOOT cabs which the same magazine gave great reviews. I've got a 410 and a 115 on the way. they are very solid, and look quite chunky too but still very light weight. I think it's a bit unfair judging a 112 thinking its going to have the performance of a 810. i also use aguilar gs112's for rehearsals but I would never expect them to sound anything like a bigger cab. they are what they are...a 112. if you want something a bit different then definitly give them a look. The same goes for Barefaced I love the sound of alex's 115 compact cab! loads of low end sub which I love, would like to see some different finish options though as I'm not a fan of the black rough finish.
22. Hi mate. I used to work for Mike, I had an S4 which i sold for about £750 3 years ago. I reckon you might get around £650 - £750 depending on the condition. Is it an ash back, maple top, maple and purple heart neck with rosewood finger board? Wes
23. ask your local guitar shop. most chuck the boxes for big cabs
