1.
Wow Great amp, good price (especially for the custom shop options) and a great chap to buy from!
Thanks Mert!
2. A couple of guys have asked about the volume.... Because of the lower gain first stage, you'll need to get the master volume up to about 2pm to really open it up for live work, but once you get there it's got the valve thing going on in spades. And it really does stay clean too, just as I wanted. There are a ton of tones in there too, from deep sub bass to glassy highs! Through a couple of decent sized cabs I am sure you could do a medium-sized pub no problem, plus of course the DI out on these gives you all that lovely valve tone as well if you need reinforcement out front.
3. It is with some considerable reluctance that I put up my brand new UK custom shop Ashdown CTM30 for sale, but my amplification needs have changed since I ordered it. This amp is UK made, unlike the standard “Made in PRC” version, but is slightly different from the production model as it is fitted with ECC81s in the preamp stage instead of ECC83s. This is because I wanted an amp where the signal didn't break up easily, staying clean as volume increased. I understand that Ashdown also fitted different resistors too, to ensure the amp ran as efficiently as possible with this valve configuration. As the amp has been made especially for me, I also asked for white chicken head knobs to be fitted instead of the standard black rotaries. Needless to say, the amp doesn’t disappoint, as it provides a lovely clean valve tone without the normal breakup that characterises the standard CTM30 (and the LB30, on which it was based). It’s perfect for recording, which is why I bought it, but is loud enough to handle small/medium gigs as well. The amp is brand new. I have only plugged it in to test it before posting, but it has never been gigged. £450 gets it delivered to your door, which given the standard production model retails at £599 is quite the deal. Collection from Hampshire also welcome for £435.
4. Yes, definitely worth getting your nut checked (!), and lower tension flats could help too. LA Bella white nylons are an excellent choice in this regard.
5. Two brand new and unused Springbreak straps by Richter Leather of Germany. They are lovely but just too wide for me. Both are made of very high quality, soft nappa leather. One is all black, one is brown with white stitching. Adjustable from 98 to 140 cm in increments of 2 cm. Width is 11 cm. There are 3 holes in the adjustable rear part of the strap. They look like this: £51 in the UK, I'd like £40 posted for each.
6.
I use one of these: http://www.radialeng.com/bigshotio.php
Also excellent. Bombpoof and passive so no need for power. You can trim the gain on one input to balance the two instruments.
7. If you want EQ, then two units to consider are the Radial Bassbone and the Providence Bass Station. I have used both over the years with great success, but prefer the Providence overall.
8. Nice! Good timing too, as apparently the SE model is being discontinued in favour of a US-made version!
9. I'm interested. How thick is the padding? Can you direct me to an image of the specific model online?
10.
Was it you that had the sandberg thinline? I've always liked the look of those...
Yes indeed it was. Lovely bass in every way.
11.
Here's a clip from my gig last night of my tweeterless S212. I get enough highs off it for my needs, but YMMV.
It really is all about the bass
12. Interesting observation. My main bass had a slight dead spot at the 7th fret on the G string. No biggie, but noticeable reduction in sustain compared with every other note. Then last night I noticed that the neck bolts were slightly loose, so I tightened them up, and the dead spot has now moved to the 5th fret! I can only assume that the tighter join has shifted the point at which the resonant frequency is cancelled out.
13. I sold a valve to Rich. His communications were excellent throughout and I would be very happy to deal with him again.
14. I sold a set of strings to Nige. A straightforward transaction with good comms. I'd happily deal with him again
15. D'Addario Chromes are pretty bright.
16. I'd say yes, having owned a few, but it's only marginally louder than a solid body.
17. If you aren't used to setting up a fretless, then as you suggest is a logical place to start. That said, many fretless players prefer a neck with very little relief, and a lower action too. Nut height is also really important on a fretless - you can take the slots way down on a fretless. Gary Willis' website is a good place to start.
18. My old head IIRC. Terrific piece of kit, valve preamp, compressor and EQ. Lovely. Half tempted
19.
Yeah, had the same via Facebook too. No response.
Tommy used to be fantastic at responding to email and via social media. Perhaps he's the victim of his own success and is now too busy making cabs to keep up with demand?!
20.
I use two of them with a TH500, no tweeters here and ... I've not wanted for tweeters once.
Same here.
21. The more time I spend on this bass, the more convinced I am it's the best playing fretless I have ever had, which given the number I've owned is quite the compliment!
