1.
Agreed. I'd call them up and tell them you'd like to meet up to discuss the future of the band and your place in it. I voted for the beginning of a rehearsal 'cos that's probably the easiest time to get them all in a room together but really, just tell them you want to get them all in a room together to discuss something important. They might have an idea of what the conversation will be about but what's wrong with that?
+1. Don't do it via email, it's really impersonal. One step up from being dumped via text.
  2. IIRC it was destroyed in the fire at his house a few years back, and he hasn't got another one. I think he said that EBMM were reluctant to make another because of all the one-off tooling costs. Would love to be corrected though.

I bet he'd crawl naked over broken glass to get JPJ on board
  4. My top trio, today:

Marcus Miller
Michael Manring
Alain Caron
As for the guys who made me want to pick up the bass in the first place:

Dave Steele (The Beat)
Mark King
Tony Butler
As far as Macca is concerned... OK maybe not the flashest of players all the time, and yes perhaps there's a lot of root-five at times, but as has been said, why not if that's what fits the songs? (I can but add a +1 to MoJoKe's excellent point here: "A really good bass player with great timing and, yes, groove, can be completely invisible, and make the song sound brilliant".) On the other hand, there are lovely melodic lines like Lady Madonna... cracking stuff. He may not be my personal choice as a big influence, but I can definitely understand if he is for some people. Also... Sgt. Pepper's is 'unimaginative'? The birth of the concept album, 'unimaginative'?
Yes, it did all get rather too much of a din from time to time (sorry from me when I had any part in this, but blame Bernie G for I didn't touch any amps!!). For such a successful event, it perhaps may be better to consider a bigger or multi room venue next time, so there might be a more effective split of sound areas, with consideration, but not just for the benefit of the acoustic guys....
Yes, dividing the electric from the acoustic would be a good idea... tell you what though, compared to the last couple of shows I'd been to, this one was almost silent..! And all the better for it.
he told me they were all on their "other" stand.....
Other stand my arse... from what I could see, there was one Fender bass in that entire room Ah well, the Lakkies are miles better anyway.
  7.
Absolutely +1. Like what was said in a previous post, we had no idea what we tunes were going to play until we turned up at Church, the Pastor would give us a list and off we'd go. As I don't read music at all, not even chord charts it pushed me to a whole new level of bass playing. Luckily I have an excellent musical ear and can pick things up very quickly. The Church has full P.A. mixing desk etc so the sound is very good.

Believe it or not, this is not unique to Church Musicians..
I don't think he ever said that it was...
  8.
Nick, do you normally mention to total strangers that you own 57 basses?
Hidden in the darkest depths of the wildest rainforests of Irian Jaya, there are tribes of pygmies hitherto undiscovered by modern man or the Discovery Channel. Even they know that Nick has 57 basses.

Thoroughly enjoyed Stuart C's seminar on Saturday, some great skills and a wonderful sound from that GBEBS combo..! Wish I'd known so may of my fellow BCers were in there... I was the one asking about double-thumbing, and Stu's following explanation was very thorough and easy to understand. I might even give it a bash myself now! The Manson weirdies were interesting to behold, no doubting the beautiful craftsmanship in the mermaid and the 21-string acoustic monster, but not my cup of tea sonically. Had a quick bash on that lovely blue Lakky DJ5, and am now GASing for one big-style. What a fabulous sound. Love it. My gtrist mate was very taken with the seriously clever Peavey amp sim recording software, incredible stuff. Some lovely jazz guitars in abundance on the various stands too. Disappointed in the Gibson stand, a huge range of Les Pauls and very little else. VERY disappointed in the Fender stand... one bass? Come on guys, not good enough by half. Nice to see Jim Marshall... The Father Of Loud, indeed. The daddy of music as we know it. Respect. Gutted to have missed JJB though! I came away with a few freebies, my one cash investment of the day was one of the Musitrac instrument microchip thingies. Have just installed it in the Shuker, a bit nerve-racking drilling a hole in my pride and joy but a dead easy job and a bit of peace-of-mind.

  11.
and conversely no evidence of God's non existence.
Sounds a bit like the old business with Iraq and their supposed WMDs to me... how on earth do you prove beyond all doubt that something doesn't exist? Ah well. Yes. Music. What with this being the General Bass Discussion area and all...
anyway, anyone for some bass playing, i enjoyed that video of John entwistle, although i think his bass would look daft on a little guy like me.
The JE biog film was shown on the Biography channel again earlier. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although he was getting some seriously crap sounds from the rig in his drawing room!
  12.
Just had an email from Ashdown, they say "fingers crossed" they'll be in stores mid November.....
They've probably got their 'fingers crossed' that they don't all go ffzzztttttt within 6 weeks too.

  16.
Still waiting.......
If you wait long enough, three ERBs will come along at once. Presumably making them Evidently Real Buses?
  17. The Yves Carbonne sounds almost sitar-like. The world needs more bass/sitar crossover hedge-trimming banjos
  18.
This is all very good but I still get the impression that after a gig they wouldn't be into "back to mine" and "lets get leathered" and sort the worlds ills out.
Yeah, but neither am I... not the 'getting leathered' bit anyway... and I'm atheist
  19. It strikes me that both secular (especially political) and religious songs fall into two camps. There are those that are very up front with their message, right from the first line it's "BLAM this is what I've got to say and you're going to feckin well know it", a lyrical message you couldn't miss if you tried. And then there are those which are clever in the way they imply rather than state what their intent is. The sort of song where you don't even know you're listening to a political or religious message until you think about it afterwards. You can use a lyric to say "Thatcher was a bitch" or "God is love" either by stating it every other bar, or never mentioning them by name once. Both ways are just as effective in their delivery. The subtle method even more so, IMHO -- at least then you don't feel that you're being beaten over the head with someone else's soapbox.
  20.
Also when the BigBeefChief is the voice of moderation and reason in a thread you know somethings up. Yes some folk play bass and beleive in things, others play bass and dont believe in things, its all very intresting but im not sure this thread is the place to prove/disprove God's existence/nonexistence or talk about our personal beefs with religion/non religion. Maybe start a 'God I love [s]Jazz[/s] God' thread..... lol no dont
+1. I tried to point this out 2 pages ago, and it did become sensible for a short while... Personally I'm quite happy to discuss all aspects of religion till the cows come home, but this is not the place for it (apart from anything else, it's the 'General Bass Discussion' subforum!). So please folks, stick to the music and leave the deity-bashing out of it. Obviously a lot of you share my deep-seated atheism, but this is not the thread in which to voice it.
  21. The waiting is painful...
I just have to concentrate on paying for the thing now . . .
...but that's REALLY painful
  22. +1. Why in god's name the 80s headstock? Also, a bit concerned by "NIC-CAD BATTERIES-BUILT IN"... would those be the same nickel-cadmium battery types that have awful discharge characteristics and a high susceptibility to 'memory'? Not the greatest of battery choices for a gigging instrument?
  23.
If you work with any drummers then you are endangering your ears if you do not wear earplugs. Even with brushes the peak SPL from a snare is easily enough to cause damage.
My erstwhile drummer found it was the cymbals that were doing the real damage to his ears... all those big HF spikes, and right at ear level too.
  24. You often see Andrew Gouche's name mentioned in terms of gospel bass... he's supposed to be fairly hot. Are there any of his youtubisms we can check out? (can't get to it to search at the moment, works PC won't let me get to youtube)
  25.
wasn't the original post about the musical and production values of the church in question and not the delusional / ill-grounded nature of various belief systems?
Yes, and it'd be nice to keep it that way. We've got quite a few threads that have veered into the territory of religion. Can we keep this one strictly on-topic please (i.e. gospel/worship music discussed as music rather than as gospel/worship)? For what it's worth, I love hearing gospel choirs -- being an atheist, I just ignore the message and listen to the lovely noise they make.
