I play really hard stuff to show everybody what a badass I am. I do it every weekend because showing everybody what a badass I am is the most important part of my involvement in music.
Haha! brilliant! I once had a great thing happen whilst trying out a bass in a music shop. I'm sat there playing a bass when across the shop (no sound booths in this shop) a fella trying out a guitar started jamming to the bass-line I was playing. It turned into an amazing five minutes of freestyle funk, totally off the cuff, fluid. We shook hands after the guitars were put back ... I've never seen the guy since. I love that kinda thing.

[sup]I was recently looking at Jazz basses in a guitar shop. On both the USA deluxe and USA standard that I played, the pickguard and the metal part that covers the control cavity were lined up badly with a distinct gap between them. Whereby on the Chinese-made "Modern player" Jazz that I played, everything was perfectly assembled. It just goes to show, you can't take it for granted that just because a Fender is American-made, the quality control with be water tight.[/sup] [sup]Pretty disappointing really. Personally, I would expect better on an expensive instrument.[/sup]

From the childrens tv show Zingzillas ... Dreaming 'bout bananas ... Stuart Zender, funking it out ... Great bass line ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJrHWmCjfx0
Really?, have you seen the 'Billy Bo'. And even the nice one's, have this as their headstock! I rest my case.
Wow!!! This is almost but still not quite as bad as the Rickenbacker 4001/3 ... but eeeuch! ... grotesque, to be sure.

Warwick Streamer Stage 1 ... no contest. Particularly the early models with the cherry body, wenge neck, and one-piece bridge. That said the 30th anniversary edition with the black hardware is pretty sexy (same woods, mind you)
I see. That's all very well, but when someone posts some useful information in response to a request, is it right that it should be lost too?
That's a fair point. There's often useful information in old sold/ withdrawn/ sorted posts. I find that looking at old posts in the "for sale" sections gives useful reference for pricing, comparison, etc.

The Rickenbacker 4001 is particularly hideous. Terrible lines, clutter, pointless binding, crude plastic and cheapy-looking chrome tat all over the place. They seem like an un-necessary condradiction to their undoubtable quality of build. Don't like the sound of them either. Appologies to Rick-lovers, but they are the crust that Satan scrapes from under his man-boobs.
Warwick SSI, those things are hideous....;-)
hahaha! aye, right enough Phil

The subject of this topic is entirely subjective, to be sure. One persons dream bass is anothers nightmare. Aesthetically, most players would have a bass, or style of bass, that particularly floats their boat. But on the flip side, one which you find to be most gross to behold. What's the bass which makes you baulk?

Does anyone know exactly what Trace Elliot gear that Stuart Zender was using during his time with Jamiroquai?
Used to have one of these and I thought it was great. I stripped mine and was surprised that they are solid wood and not ply
Aye, ditto. My first bass was a Sunn Mustang. Better than subsequent, more expensive basses that I owned. I should have kept it really. I heard somewhere that these were made in India from Fender parts. Not sure if that is correct though. Either way it's a nice bass.

Ok, so there are the obvious classic bass guitars ... Those basses which have endured and continuously prevailed through the ages, and endless fashions of music. Those basses are ingrained in our consciousness, so familiar are we with the sound and sight of them. Instruments which are the successful formula of aesthetic appeal, functionality, sound capability, quality of manufacture, and clever corporate voodoo. But is there anyhing else? At what point can a bass rightfully be called a "classic"? It may not be a Jazz, a Ray, a Rick, but a Steinberger XL2, a Warwick Streamer, an Aria SB1000 ... Is your bass a classic?

It's a good read, to be sure ... a real insight into the life of Jaco and the scene that he lived so large within. It left me feeling sad ... so so tragic.
Agreed - but now you have to explain the RS2000 Mexico ...
hahahaha!

What then, is the classic all-rounder? ... That bass guitar which covers most basses? (excuse the pun). Which bass, above all others, is most adaptable? Your suggestions ...

For trade is my Warwick Thumb NT 4 Trade - Ideally I'm after a straight swap for a Streamer Stage 1 or a Streamer Stage 2. I'd also consider a Dolphin pro 1 (neck-thru). Value-wise, I'd put this bass at £1200, although I've decided not to sell. I'll just wait it out for the right Streamer. The Bass

Made in Germany in 2000
4 string
Bubinga body, Ovankol/ Bubinga neck, Wenge fretboard
Neck-thru-body construction
MEC J/J pickups
Active (or passive) 3-way MEC electronics
Black hardware
Bell brass frets (26 frets)
Just-a-nut II
Condition Structurally the bass is totally sound, the electronics and hardware are in perfect working order, and the neck is true. The action is currently set medium-low. The bass is all original with the exeption of the jack socket which I changed for a superior Neutrik one when the original packed in. Cosmetically she is in very good condition. There are only very minor signs of wear, and a tiny 2mm ding on the back of the top horn (shown in picture). I've waxed it regularly and generally kept her out of harms way. I've really looked after this bass. The only other thing to note is that one of the adjustment screws on the nut doesn't tighten, so the nut is supported internally with a titanium shim (This can be removed very easily if needs be). The nut is solid and does its job, so I've never bothered replacing it with the superior Just-a-nut 3. To be frank, the Just-a-nut 2 is a piece of crap. The designers at Warwick must have had a brain-fart with that bad boy. Dimensions

Neck thickness at 1st fret - 20.7mm
Neck thickness at 12th fret - 25.1mm
Neck thickness at 20th fret - 26.5mm
Neck width at nut -38.5 mm
Neck width at 12th fret - 55mm
String spacing at bridge - adjustable
Weight - 4.7kg / 10lb4oz
Scale length - 34"
The bass comes with a slightly shabby but fully functional, super padded, heavy-duty Warwick Rockbag like this one ... http://www.thomann.d...CFXDLtAod_F0AeA You're welcome to come and have a look/ play but as I live on the remote north coast of Scotland it's pretty unlikely. If you're interested or have any questions drop me a message. Here's a link to a video which explains the electronics, controls, sounds, etc ... Where to find a 500k / 500k stacked spilit-shaft pot?
Fionn replied to Fionn's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've had trouble sourcing these in the past. Solid shaft, fine. Split shaft non-concentric, fine. Split & concentric but 250k, fine. But 500k, split concentric... Nope.
You said it. -
My beastly rig
Niiiice!!! ... the Warwick / Gallien Krueger combination is a winner.

Where to find a 500k / 500k stacked spilit-shaft pot?
Fionn replied to Fionn's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've still had nae luck finding the goodies. As said before ... 500k / 500k stacked pot, with a split shaft. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'll build a temple in their honour. -
I just saw a 1981 Aria SB900 on fleabay, identical to mine. The serial number caught my attention. It is 1120518, mine is 1120517 ... what are the chances of that?! Crazy, this is the bass that was next off the production line to my own. Thought I'd share that as it seems so unlikely. If I was rich I'd reunite them. Back in the day I recorded much of my vinyl onto mini-disc. It sounded amazing! Because there is so much compression a lot of the more extreme artifact from the vinyl is removed, but somehow the goodies stay intact. It's an interesting sound.
