1. http://www.bassesbyleo.com/ has all sorts of stuff, including links to more stuff about the basses. the tribute pre amp does is slightly different to some of the usa models
2.
I'll wade in with my observation that in damn near every 2 pickup bass I've played, both pickups on tends to yield the most "polite" sound, rounded, smooth, not much of the "grit" needed to cut through a mix. It's like the two individual characters of the pickups cancel each other out rather than being summed or complementing each other. No, the pickups are not out of phase, there's plenty volume, it's just too smooth. Your ears may be telling you that but may I be pedantic and correct you here - the tone controls do the same regardless of whether or not the preamp is switched on, they are passive, cut only controls in the circuit before the output from the pickups hits the preamp. This signal then either goes straight to the jack or through the preamp depending on the position of the passive/active/active w/treble boost switch. The preamp is simply a line boost, with an optional (and rather horrible sounding to my ears) treble boost facility, all of which happens after the tone controls.
I didn't know that, thanks! Kinda makes sense that i prefer it on full now
3. bass gallery are usually nice and have a good range. also quite easy to get to from most places by public transport
4. I find series has a lot more guts at the expense of "finesse". Front pickup in series, passive with both tones up full is one of my favourites. Bit like a P bass on steroids. Front pickup in parallel doesn't seem to do too much for my liking. Both pickups in series is not as aggressive as a single pickup and is a bit more balanced, this is a good all rounder. Both pickups in parallel a very very nice tone but maybe not the best for cutting through unless you doing all slappety stuff. Active works well with the . Bridge pickup in series, can be a bit wild and to my ears has a massive bump in the spectrum somewhere, fiddling with the tone controls can yield anice super jazz kinda sound. Bridge in parallel, sounds a touch thin, benefits from active bass boost. The tone controls do different thigns whether in active/passive. I think in passive you usually want to have them on full, in active they become boosts so for a "flat sound" they need to be somewhere in the middle, but full on sounds pretty damned good! rolling them off can give some interesting distinctive tones. Just my experience really, ymmv as always. Personally passive/both pickups/series/full tone is my default setting.
5. niiice. there'll be an overwater available for everyone!
6. I have sunbeams on at the moment and they are nice. not necessarily to everyone's taste though as they are quite flexible
7. Steve's a very nice guy, also met a few time and been to a couple of his gigs when he was London based. He used to be a regular on these boards, or at least the old bassworld.

9.
Yeah been looking at the Wizard P/J Combo(Big).....but not having knowingly heard them, how can I be sure they are right for me?
I inherited a Wizard P/J set on my Aerodyne, supposedly an overwound 62 J and a thumper P. I find this to be a very nice combination indeed, really thick P bass with a vintage, slightly aggressive sounding J, combine them and you have a very cool sound which sounds a bit like a Jazz but with some proper oomph. Andy is a top bloke, if you speak to him he will probably be able to work out what pick-ups you need and make them up for you.
10.
Do we really need something genuinely new? Doesn't what we have available now do a good enough job?
Well that's another matter Lots of things do a great job as they do now but doesn't mean they won't advance My point was that if they wanted to Fender have the resources to produce something new and innovative but they choose not to for whatever reason (well presumably they reckon it's good economics and they'd probably be right!). I'm not knocking them it's their choice but it would be beneficial to us if they looked in to doing something original.
11. It think Fender Fender's design team is a bloke with a few buckets containing bits of card that say things like "jazz pickups". Fender do make some top notch basses, just a shame they can't be bothered to apply their skills to something genuinely new.
12.
Mine's on ebay! 2 hours left! currently £300 - as new!
I had no internets for a few days so missed out there!
Lets keep some perspective - the promethean cab is great but it aint no barefaced/epifani/markbass, it sounds distinctly coloured and "boxy" compared to my midget-T for example (but then again you get a "free" amp and still have £100 or so change ...). Eminently usable, dont get me wrong, but think commodity rather than boutigue level sound quality at least for the cab anyway.
I would expect the separate cab to sound a fair bit better than the inbuilt one though? Its a significantly bigger box. Bass gallery they are expecting promethean stock this month but thinking about it not sure if that includes the neo cabs.
13. Any news on the quality of the remastering. A lot of new remasters have a habit of being a bit rubbish but I can't imagine that being allowed here. Very tempted to go for the box set but it's no cheaper than buying them individually and I want to get the vinyl releases as well.
14. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience: I bought two packs of DR sunbeams of ebay and as my 2 basses were in need of setups got them put on. First up the Fender Aerodyne, I acquired it with a set of steels on, but I really dislike steels so the sunbeams were put on by the good people at the gallery for the setup. Tried it out in the shop and thought it was totally awesome and a fantastic winning combination. So gave the bass number 2 the g&l tribute l2000 and sunbeams went on there too. Tried it in the shop today felt very nice to play and the sunbeams are really easy on the fingers, but wasn't sure about the sound, but was only a very quick noodle on an amp i didn't bother to set up. Tried it again at home at even though I'm currently using my ratty peavey microbass it seems as though all the life has gone out of it. It doesn't sounds bad at all but it's supposed to be (and usually is) a very aggressive sounding bass and now it sounds a touch lifeless, I can't really put my finger on it. I will leave them on there because it has been set up perfectly to match the stings and if i start messing with it it would have been a bit of a waste. More than anything I'm miffed as to how it works so well on one bass but not another. Do wish I had given them some superalloys to put on, pity they are crazy expensive now.
15. ah
I have a feeling it's something to do with the supposed supply issues of Neodymium, which has hiked the price of speakers up and made them less available. I think there's some in stock in the European stores though if that was an option for you? They work out around the same price as UK stores.
Ah, kinda all fits in to place now! I looked at thomann but not on there, don't really know any others off the top of my head.
16. thanks, looking at the dimensions it looks like it's not much bigger than my peavey microbass footprint wise, that is very convenient. Will try and get to a shop to try one to fully convince myself, annoyingly not in stock at the gallery, according too the site at least.
17. At the moment, just jamming/home so would be "over using it" for now though hopefully some small gigs in the future if some stuff comes to fruition. I'd rather sensibly over provision than under. If I could have bought the 110 cab I probably would have ordered it weeks ago but it seems like it won't be around for quite a while according to a dealer i contacted. I am leaning towards the combo because I can't really justify spending over £400 on a cab which although is probably better is actually bigger so less suited. I realise a 10" speaker has limitations, would be sweet if they had done a 12" version of it really, but I think it'd fine. Will be left with a slightly redundant 300w Warwick amp though, which although does sound pretty good probably wouldn't sell for much given the current market. Guessing you get on with yours?
18. Hello! I'm looking for a small cab and this Ibanez one seems ideal but I can't find any in stock. Anyone know why? The only thing I can find that comes close is the Epifani ul 110 cab but that's considerably more expensive, though if it's "that good" I could potentially fork out for it. Will be giving it a whirl when I head down to the bass gallery to pick up a bass this week so looking for opinions on that if anyone has? My other option is to just buy the promethean combo which is still available it seems, I understand the cab wouldn't be quite as good (irrelevant if I can't buy one!) but it is a touch smaller and there's a top notch removable head. I don't really "need" a new head but my Warwick pro-fet plays up with lots of crackly sounds needs some repair work. It's also 2 rack sizes so was considering sticking it under my bed or in the loft(not worth selling as could come in handy) and swapping for one of those little GK amps. Would I be stupid for spending on a head when I don't really need to? Better value than spending £400+ on just a cab in the long run I guess? Help me be less confused if you can, thanks
19. Can't stand the look of most of them. Just looks not quite right
20. I find nickels growlier than steels.
21.
Yeah that's the question though. Fender sold a fair few Highway Ones even though you could probably get a better made, better specced Fender for the same price. By the way I play a JV Squier which was cheaper and better made than the equivalent US made Precision, yet plenty of people still went out and bought Fenders back then (in the olden days when Fenders were US made by default!).
never tried a Highway one, can't say I was drawn to it at all. Some people liked the finish on it apparently but I reckon a bunch of people bought it because it said made in USA. I doubt there was anything wrong with them but better value options probably out there, especially here, I imagine in the States you pay less overheads so was probably better value over there..
22. I think Andy at Wizard pickups was working on a P pickup in j package, could drop him an email?
