I do like the Uberhorn shape. The Aqua tint one with the maple board is yummy.

I loved the PM4 I tried in PMT. Message ends.

Our rehearsal space was freezing last week so tomorrow I'm going to wear woollen gloves. I don't care how it sounds!

Thanks for the info Dave. Might try the Overwaters next time.

I guess the trite reply would be "Every bass player I've ever heard." I don't think my bass "hero's" have really influenced my playing that much. I sound nothing like Steve Harris, Mark King or Gene Simmons although I wish I sounded more like Bernard Edwards, Larry Graham or Louis Johnson. I do have a rather strange, specific influence and that is the bass line to "Everybody Here Wants You" by Jeff Buckley, which I believe was played by the man himself. To my mind it represents the perfect understated, supportive, well phrased bass line. So if I find myself "plodding along" a bit too much I try to emulate the feel of that track and it helps lift my playing somewhat.
Hello Ian, swapped the hot and cold on the HB and it works beautifully! With both pups on centered blend, it has a really throaty mid scooped sound with no loss of bass or volume. Superb!
So pleased you got it sorted mate...nice one.
That is why the fret rocker is so useful. Great bit of kit isn't it Paul. Alistair, sounds like a high fret to me.
Wouldn't be without mine. One of the best pieces of kit out there for set ups.
-
To do it properly you need a straight edge that covers three frets at a time. A fret rocker has a different sized edges so that you can do this all over the neck.

Fret Rocker. Invaluable. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STAINLESS-STEEL-FRET...#ht_2611wt_1139

Good idea, I will try it out. Although I am still leaning towards dumping it. Mainly because as much as possible I set everything flat on amps etc. and everything up full on my bass and do the rest with my right hand. I think knowing that I have had to tweak the eq on the Zoom just to make it usable would irk me!

Four pages of Artec stuff on ebay but no SE2A. Same with Axes r Us. Lots of Artec but no SE2A. Maybe email Axes?
Count me in. I'm sure it's largely psychological but it's definitely a factor. I used to have a warwick corvette a few years ago, very funky bass - everytime I picked it up I'd come out with insane stu zender style grooves. When I pick up the stingray now though I always automatically just dig in hard near the bridge, and it's more disco or funk rock. I guess it means I'm just not as controlled a player (fine by me as I don't want to be a pro, I just play for fun) but I definitely feel like it's the instrument which gives me the inspiration.
You're a man after my own heart! And the more I think about the more I think it's the best way to be. I like the way my style is affected by the instrument, it makes sense to me. So anyway...there have been developments! I have put an Artec alnico p pickup in and although in itself it didn't solve the problem but it has led to the solution. Apparently it was my Zoom B2 which I use to boost the signal only and keep everything else flat. It's a tone sucking monster! With it my bass was sounding harsh and brittle. Without it, and with the new pickup I am much, much happier.

I've been struggling with my tone recently at rehearsals after trying to play some funkier stuff and just not getting that warm, burpy, mid hump sound I was after. It all sounded a bit harsh and a little bit "rock". The first thing I decided to do was to replace the ceramic p pickup with an alnico. I had already swapped out the j. That's a fix I have done many times as ceramic pickups tend to sound a little too brittle for my taste. In the past when I have done that there has been an instant and noticeable improvement however this time the alnico sounded just as harsh as the ceramic. I don't mid admitting that I was puzzled. Puzzled I say! So then I thought I would check the Zoom to make sure I hadn't accidentally changed the eq settings. Normally I use the Zoom to boost the output and as tuner. Everything else I keep off. It was all set as normal with the lo and hi eq's turned off. The next step was to plug direct into the amp leaving the Zoom out of the equation. SUCCESS! And there it was! Burpy mid warmth in buckets! Buckets I say! I still have to see how it sounds through the rehearsal rig but as far as I am concerned the tone sucking monster that is my Zoom B2 is now dumped! Funny thing is that I have always been full of praise for them up until now. However with my current bass it sounds harsh, brittle and possibly a little bit digital! Message ends.

Depends on the bass. No strong feelings about it either way. That's right, I'm sitting on the fence, what you gonna do about it? I'll tell ya...NOTHING.
I believe the Japanese version doesn't have the 70's bridge pickup placement, though it does have US Vintage pickups IIRC.
I slouch corrected. Is it an ash plus 70's spacing v. alder and 60's spacing thing? EDIT: Sorry, missed the placement bit. Still, ash v. alder?

My guitarist played bass in a band with a £50 Lindo. Reckons it's a perfectly good bass. Not sure what model though.
Interesting thread Paul I tend to play different depending on my sound. The advantage for me is the fact that the ACG is so sodding versatile it can match any style I want too play. If I want a funky sound I dial in a funky sound & alter style accordingly If I want a rock sound I dial in a rock sound & alter style accordingly I could play either way with either sound BUT it wouldn't feel as natural.
Thank you! I think it's natural for playing to be affected by your tone. After all everything we do really comes down to listening. Listening to the band and to ourselves. So if I'm not happy with my tone then it will affect my feel.
Well I'd like to think this is the exception that proves the rule. And of course there are narrow minded nobs who read also. I was referring to recent conversations tbh
Then I bow to your knowledge of those recent conversations. I haven't the stamina or constitution to read this whole thread! p.s. Non reader.
...when I'm like 'what did you just play?!' we are able to have a conversation that leaves me informed, scared and confused!...
If any one asks me what I just played I normally say. "I have no idea, what did it sound like?".

This is complete guesswork but a lot of Japanese instruments come with ceramic pickups and US ones with Alnico.
If there were a study into the fairness and objectivity of the charges on these pages then I'm pretty sure that the weight of evidence would suggest that the reading lobby is much more accepting of all comers.
I really don't like to be controversial and I am not really trying to be so I hope that this is going to be taken in the light hearted manner it is intended... I haven't read any of this thread but in others... I have been called dishonest for liking relic jobs, by a reader. I have read posts where a reader states categorically, and completely seriously, that jazz fans are more intelligent that everyone else. A reader has also said (and I paraphrase) that playing cover versions, something a lot of us do, is infantile and beneath him. The point is that we are all as bad as each other when we are defending our viewpoints. But readers are worse.
