1.
I think it's better to get a good head than cab just due to the amount of gigs that are 'cabs supplied just bring heads'
Can't say I've ever done a gig like that. I have either used someone else's entire rig (back in the old days) or I have supplied my own. And now I am 100% more likely to be on the bill with a DJ and not another band. Because our singer is a DJ!
2. I have altered the poll to suit you lot of awkward buggers.
3.
Very well. The Precision works better with a pork pie though.....
Very happy with my flat cap and Retrovibe set up.
4. So how is the trilby/Retrovibe combination working out?
5.
95% chance it was the amp that started the fire.
Well, I expected to be in the minority...I always am on here! I am currently using a Harley Benton BA500 and a Barefaced Compact and I am absolutely blown away by how good it sounds. Now I am sure that it hasn't got a lot to do with the the £200 HB Markbass rip off! And talking to a guitarist friend the other day we agreed that you can get a good sound out of an average amp and a good cab, but a crappy cab can suck the tone out of the best amp money can buy.
6. <good natured but admittedly sarcastic reply> So out of the choice of your amp or your cab you feel the biggest contribution to your sound is your bass? Do you understand the concept of multiple choice? </good natured but admittedly sarcastic reply> I know what you're saying but I'm talking about amps and cabs. QUICK, YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE AND YOU CAN SAVE ONLY YOUR AMP OR ONLY YOUR CAB.....WHICH IS IT?
7. LED conversion kit for a Maglite.
8. I believe the RV4's are set neck so hopefully it won't be anything as drastic as the resonance of the wood. Beedster is spot on with the high mass bridge suggestion although the stock bridge seems to be fairly chunky. At the risk of being patronising, are you still using the factory strings? If so new strings might help. Also I understand that the pickups on these are quite hot and if they are set too close to the strings it is possible that the magnetic field from the pick up is strong enough to restrict the vibration of the string killing the sustain. If that is the case then lowering the pickups will help. It is most likely just a combination of various things. But check strings and pickup height and have a tinker. A good set up might well be half the battle.
9. @Mr. F. You are most probably correct. The reason for this poll is that I am now using a cheap arse amp through a great cab...and it sounds awesome. I am convinced this has far more to do with the cab than it does with the amp.
10. I am talking about YOUR set up in particular. Do you use an amp with a particular sound and use a transparent* sounding cab? Meaning that you can change cabs without affecting your tone. (Too much.) Do you use a neutral sounding amp and rely on the cab for colour*? Meaning your amp is just there for volume and everything else is down to bass and cab. Oh and fingers before any of you chime in. *I have no idea what these terms mean. I am just repeating things I have heard in an attempt to fit in.
11.
Ok i am now going to get a hat ,this thread has inspired me !
Do it. It WILL change your life.
12. Great stuff Craig.
13.
Great Shot! I got three new hats from Village Hats recently, yet to see a gig pic though.
Thanks. I absolutely hate photos of myself due to me looking like an ugly twunt but for some reason I am really enjoying our band photos! I've returned to gigging after a 10 year break and now that I'm 40 I feel like I need a hat to hide behind/under.
14. FINALLY!!!
15. Now I'm finally gigging again I feel like I can join in!
16. That is rather yummy. (He says turning the laptop 90 degrees in a proper old fashioned porn stylee.)
17. Played the Shooting Star last night with a dep on second guitar. In the end that made no difference because I couldn't hear anything on stage, and I was quite drunk. We went down well, had fun and got paid. So no complaints from me!
18. I have to confess to never noticing a difference in volume between sets of strings. To be honest in 25 or so years of playing about the only thing I know with certainty is that I like stainless steels on a p type bass and nickels on a j type bass.
19. Barefaced Compact. More than any other piece of kit I have owned, it has "keeper" written all over it!
20. I always play with everything on full. More to do with being slightly OCD than tone. Even if I roll down the tone or a pickup I will invariably just turn it back up during the song.
21. I like Roberts Growlers but I haven't seen any available for a while. Great steels for about £9.
22.
Actually you posted it while I was formulating my rather long winded reply/apology. I'm not sure my apology would have been so genuinely heartfelt had I seen what you'd written about me.
Mate, I am sure you are a lovely bloke and I hate to see anyone argue on BC...especially me! But look at it from my perspective.... The "Meanwhile..." comment was plain rude and would only just be acceptable even with a smiley. You make a comment about opinions but seem absolutely determined to prove that mine are wrong. You are reading things into my posts that are not there so suite your argument. I never said boost or claimed anything similar. To be honest I feel like I am being picked on. Even icastle is having a go at me for being offended by clearly offensive comments. You are obviously a knowledgeable guy and all I know is what I have experienced and what I have heard. So is it ok if I just ask you a few questions and you can tell me where I'm "going wrong"?
23. So what I have learnt in this thread is that replacing low quality components with high quality ones does in no way count as an upgrade. That the electrical signal from pickups to output jack is not affected in any way whatsoever by the components and connections in between in any way that can be detected audibly. That you can say anything to anyone as long as you follow it up with a "I'm not saying you are...." caveat. And my personal favourite, that you are not allowed to take offence at something if the poster half apologises after you've taken offence at it. Glad that's all cleared up.
24.
Suit yourself.
I only said exactly what the other fella did that apparently wasn't cause for offence. Surely you're not offended by it?
