1. BASS SOLD! For sale is my Hawkes 'Concert' model double bass labelled 1925. It is with much deliberation that I have decided to sell this highly sought after instrument, but I'm needing to upgrade and can't justify having this as a second bass. With original varnish (making it more valuable) it is in very good condition for the age. The table and back are excellent with no nasty repairs/cracks but it has a few war wounds to the ribs which is typical of a workhorse of this age. The bass was restored and fitted with a C extension in 2007 by Malcolm Healey and has also subsequently been worked on by Roger Dawson (bridge/setup). It currently has Evahs GDA and a permanent 'room rattling' bottom C. Anyone who knows these instruments knows that they are LOUD! I have played this particular instrument with the Royal Philharmonic Orch, the Brighton Phil and New London Sinfonia and it is a beastial orchestral bass. Jazzers will also not be disappointed as the pizz is huge! LOB (length of back) - 111.5cm (43.80in) Width across upper bouts - 56.9cm (22.40in) Width across middle bouts - 40.6cm (15.95in) Width across lower bouts - 68.2cm (26.85in) Depth of lower ribs inc both plates- 23.2cm (9.16in) Body Stop - 60.7cm (23.85in) String length - 105.8cm (41.65in) From an investment point of view, this bass model cost around £22 back in 1925 and The Contrabasse Shoppe currently has the same (albeit in better condition) for sale at £25,000. I am pricing this to sell at £15,000. It is currently residing at Thwaites and please ring Bill for a viewing. Do please feel free to PM me with any questions. Cheers!
2. Sorry mate, but I need a pickup for work so it would have to be a trade unless someone wants to sell me a Realist or Scherlter at a good price?!
3. As great as the Bassmax is for the price, I'm finding that its not really working for my bass. I am looking to exchange it for either a Realist (wood one pref) or a Schertler pickup. I would be happy to add cash to deal, particularly in regard to the latter! Cheers! D

5. I thought these were popular? I would be interested to know if you think the price is too high?
6. He he, sod that! The atlas probably weighs heavier than the amp!
7. My potential buyer had major transport issues so couldn't get down to me. Hence its available again!
8. Two years old in near mint condition - only gigged twice and has just a couple of small scratches near the line out socket, see photo. I'm predominately a double bass player and I find it a bit boomy on the big axe. Great for guitars though as I'm sure you all know! If anyone has a Promethean P5110 I would be happy to offer my Ampeg plus cash, but only this particular amp please. I'm based in London and ideally collection in W14 Shepherds Bush area. I'm with car so would be willing to deliver within the M25 at cost.
9. Someone buy this, its doing my head in! (Or buy my beautiful, mint and easily convertible 20th Anniversary stingray fretless so I can buy this!)
10. Hi all, Just clearing out my double bass drawer and got a few things I no longer need: [s]An old underwood pickup - looks well used but works perfectly and is the real mccoy (with Belden wiring). They go for $200 new so I'm thinking £50 is fair?[/s] - SOLD [s]A brown leather bow quiver from JPB music. This is not the posh rigid one but does the job and has the necessary ties. £10[/s] - SOLD [s]A complete set of Evah Pirazzi strings (C extension) - orchestral, not weich. These have had a couple of months light usage but are in excellent condition; I just prefer the latter. £80[/s] - SOLD Thats it. Feel free to contact me with any queries and best regards!
11. I traded this bass only because I couldn't get on with the 35" scaling. I do miss it though!
12. Thwaites are a good company (if Bill bothers to answer the phone!) but ultimately, like any business, they're there to make a healthy profit. You are very wise to choose an older instrument over a new, providing its in good structural condition. I feel it is always best, particularly given the tempermental nature of basses, that you buy from another player as they have been tried and tested and played in. Alot of these new chinese and plywood basses sound great for a few feet and then die (although I guess if you are using a pickup it doesn't matter so much). If you do decide to buy a toffee apple bass from Thomann etc, then the action will almost certainly be dreadful and will need setting up. Malcolm Healey is a good man for this. Best of luck with your purchase!
13. Chris, I presume you took the passione's? I'd be interested to know what you think of them.
14. If you can go to £2000 then... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Double-Bass-7-8-Mitt...=item33658a98eb
