Bacchus Impression 'super Jazz' For Trade Or Sale
Damo200 replied to Damo200's topic in Basses For Sale
Jim - Its 3.9kg in weight. I played a Status S2 yesterday (I presume yours has the through graphite neck?) I really liked it, but had troubles with the lack of headstock and dots at the front (pathetic I know!) You got anything else? (I'm amazed your German double is still for sale, have you tried www.musicalchairs.com? Rich -You wouldn't think an inch is important but I just find it hard work in the lower positions and I'm not alone in this, though I do have smallish hands. I've got a 34" fretless and it just feels more comfortable though I'm sure its very subjective! -
It is with great reluctance that I am choosing to part with this fantastic instrument but the simple truth is that I just can't get on with the 35" scale. I am therefore looking to trade it for a comparable pro quality 34" 5 stringer. This bass is in mint condition and has recently had a fretstone, recrown and setup by Mark Willmott. It is therefore in TOP playing order. It has simple yet versatile controls - active/passive switch, 2EQ with panning between pickups or a switch to have them both on 'hot' which gives it a great Marcus Miller slap sound. I am a pro classical double bassist (so shouldn't really have a problem with the 35"!) and was recommended this bass by an eminent west-end player. I have played it in a couple of doubling gigs but otherwise its mainly just been bedroom practice. I've included a link stating the original value of the instrument, which was made in 2007. http://www.guitarjapan.com/bacchus/spec/05-IMPRESSION_5.html I list the specs below, and look forward to your thoughts/offers. I'm based in London, but would be willing to travel for the right instrument. Just to reiterate : MUST be five string, 34", active and fretted and must be top notch! Alternately, I would be willing to let this go for £1000. Construction Alder body. Flame Maple top. Neck Maple 3 piece neck. Scale 35 inch. Fingerboard Pao Ferro fingerboard. Pick ups HMC JB-ALV CUSTOM Pre amps HMC EB-3 Tuner Hip Shot. Bridge Hip Shot. Serial Inked Finish Thin lacquer non buffed finish. Many thanks for reading! Damon

Mark Thistlewood I presume? Demon player and premium piss-taker! If its him, you're in good hands!
Simandl's Gradus Ad Parnassum Books 1 and 2. " Eighty Six Studies For String Bass by Joseph Hrabe (arranged and fingered by Franz Simandl).
No offence, but I won't recommend these for a player who has only been playing for a year and a half. Try the Simandl 30 etudes first.

Hi, I've got a new, still in wrapping, set of Velvet Animas. These are top of the range with a price tag of £270. From website: 'Anima's thinner core ensures a rapid response for pizzicato and arco players alike. The strings produce a strong well-balanced sound with a rich bass and open **harmonic** range. Perfect definition and audibility in all registers makes them suitable for practically every application from Jazz to Baroque.' I'll gladly accept half price at £135. Merry Christmas people!
Hey please keep the contacts and advice coming... I too have purchased an inexpensive bass off ebay, needs a little work (hopefully not a lot but what do I know, I am clueless here) but is an old(ish) bass not one of those new Chinese ones - as I live in Wimbledon I am looking for someone local and Clapham would be absolutely fine.
Malcolm's in the Sutton area so for a Wimbledon dweller, he would be your man. -
http://www.newmooninsurance.com/musical/ I did a gig recently with a player who questioned why I was still using Allianz as he and others have now moved over to New Moon. Apparently the bottom line is that Allianz now use Indian call centre workers with no real understanding and training on the needs and issues of musicians and their instruments (particularly quirky and vulnerable intruments like the double bass), while New Moon are the original British Reserve guys who have set up independently and have the experience. They both use the same underwriters but New Moon seem to be considerably cheaper. This guy had a six figure bass so I'm thinking if he's trusting them... Another player who greedily owns a collection of Italians (I mention no names - Leon Bosch) also got a VERY good quote as did I. But we're both still a bit reticent. Any of you got any thoughts or experience on these guys? Best, D
Oh and Damon, my days of buying strings are over (if you believe that you'll believe anything). Recently tried Evahs again and love them. Expect a set of Belcantos for sale on here soon once more Evahs arrive for my spare bass!
Yeah yeah. -

Malcolm does work on the cheaper plywoods and other 'toffee apple' basses and every time I've been in I've seen at least one. The same goes for Roger Dawson and his apprentice Sam. Maybe theres just a growing trend for these basses and a fear of customer over-expectation on the part of the luthiers, but Malcolm in particular is a top guy, and I'm sure if you speak to him directly and explain your position he will help you out. I know him fairly well and will gladly put in a word if that helps. -

Could be a duff g string thats got a kink or something mate. Ask Chris Kelly in this forum if he has a g string for sale. He always seems to be selling nearly new strings (I've had a few off of him) and hes a good guy. -

Oh yes. They were originally just Hawkes of which the 'Hawkes' instruments are now worth as much as £25,000 + Just be careful of buying new shiny 'bluegrass' instruments, laminate or otherwise, particularly if you want to use a bow. Double basses are temperamental so get the best you possibly can and preferably from other experienced players.
-
Absolutely. Check out Daf Lewis on this site. He's selling an old Boosey & Hawkes plywood back when they were built like tanks. I think he's asking around £1000 but it'll sound better than most of the pine Chinese stuff out there and will take a hammering - (humidity and playing wise).
-
I've got a spare copy if you want it Daf he he. Thats the girls version anyway - do 'the mans' octave one! Oh, and Hector don't worry about your thumb. Just keep EVERYTHING relaxed, with particular eye on your bowing arm as the tension always begins there. Best regards brave soldier. D

They're fine, but also check out www.musicalchairs.info It's where the pros flog their instruments. Regards, D
