1. I've often thought about going custom but something has always put me off placing the order. Mostly my lack of knowlege about tone woods/pickup configs, luthiers etc. So with that in mind I'm documenting my thoughts here in the hope that someone can lend a machete to my thickett. I'm a rock player through and through, alot of what I do is bass driven, I play with a pick mostly but I switch to finger style alot for dynamic purposes. I love my grabber for it's punch and agression. I love P's apart from the lack of a back pickup to rest my thumb on. I don't like that my bongo has no soul, I don't like that my jazz sits ontop of the mix. I love my T-40 in humbucker mode apart from the weight. I like 2 EQ rays but not 3 EQ rays, I love the ray neck profile too and I like G&Ls, especially the thinline ASAT I dont want a fancy top wood, I'm thinking maple, ash or alder for a body wood because my grabber is maple and my fenders and peavey are alder or ash. I'm not against bass wood after playing an aerodyne but I'd be worried about it feeling too light. Shape wise I'm thinking T-bird or explorer as a sort of enthwhistle tribute and Id like it to look 70s. Pickup wise I was thinking double Darkstar for the growl and depth or 2 fat humbuckers but defiantly passive, although after the aerodyne I'm tempted by P/J or even P/P because I don't really like jazz pickups. Can anyone help in any way? Ash.
2. Thanks for the Info GW I really fancy an ABZ after playing one, but then the skjold lionsprides call out to me too. Having played both I still can't devide what I prefer :s
3. That's pretty sweet! Also me and my grabber are on the roto ad on the back of the issue of bass guitar mag behind your 51 P bass . Out of curiosity, in your opinion which of the dingwalls has the most charactor?
4. A BB or an aerodyne would be my first choice, but what about an aria Laser?
5. I love this! Really wish I could justify/afford it
6. Wow! Don't fancy your bongo back do you??
7. Isn't that super cheap for a Goodfellow?
8. I want it! Anyone fancy buying my bongo so I can get it?
9. I've always fancied an alder bodied P/J thunderbird with a fatter neck. If I ever get a custom I think that will be it
10. I'm playing a mywatt 200 on tour at the moment and its an absolute monster! The Glock cabs it's paired with don't really suit it but still. It's amazing
11. I played a few bisons in my time, they're beautiful! Plays like butter and the tone is thunderous. The body is huge though, and some think them ugly. Not me!
12. G&L ASAT thin line Gretsch White Falcon Gibson T-bird (bicentennial preferably) Rick 3001 Anything from the 80s with a pointy headstock and P/J config. Not on my cool list are Singlecuts (even though they're amazing to play) Headless basses (as above) Status streamline/stealth/S2/kingbass (as above) Warwicks (as above) How fickle is that though? I think it stands to reason that basses that don't dislocate your shoulder, balance well, sound great and in some cases even look great just aren't fashionable, instead we'd all rather walk around with our left knuckles dragging across the floor, not being able to reach past the 12th fret (not that we really need to) and never ever playing an instrument designed after roughly 1975 just in the pursuit of being cool. Seems more than slightly Guitarded to me. I thought as bass players we were meant to embrace new technology and design and not be stuck in the past with our cumbersome P-basses valve amps?
13. Yeah that's the one! I think I'm gonna hold out for a similar spec black one. It's a joy to play, I like the pointy headstock in an eddie van halen sorta way. Maybe even a Kramer or something else pointy.
14.
Any bass combined with the following stage attire........... (With apologies to "Jeff")
The singer in the band with the naked bass player was my head of year in college!
15. Hi guys, there's a mint condition US charvel P/J in a shop near me. It's up for £799 but I've been offered it for 6, that still seems expensive too me, it apparently originally cost £1499 but as we know that means nothing. I think the model is B28. Spec wise it's a passive 4 with Bass lines p/j pickups and a badass, controls are vol blend tone, no scratch plate and metallic blue in colour. Anyone got any words of wisdom? It sounds and plays great! But the price seems high.
16. I hear good things about Mike Lull too, id love to get my hands on a bird
17. I'd love it in black, or tv yellow, or cherry

Jazz pickups

I'm not into Delano, I've had the P set and the J set and not liked either. They'd be going into a CIJ JB66US, basically a jap 60s reissue with a badass on it. I've heard great things about wizard which is why I'm thinking that way but then i know from experience I like the depth of humbuckers. Nordy is more money than I wanted to spend. I'm drawn to dimarzio because I have a model p clone in a westone that I love. more than anything though I just want to end up with a great sounding jazz. I currently have a set of shed custom things that were modeled (badly) on Geddy Lee which are just too hot, they don't sit in the mix, they just cut straight through it and over power the guitars.
19. Looking for new pickups for my jazz and i can't decide weather to go for dimarzio model J or wizard 84s, I like humbuckers but i also love the tone of jazz single coils, I'm considering ultra jazz and wizard 64s aswell. What would you do? I'm currently mostly playing a grabber.
20. Oh sh*t! Birth year dream bass
21. Sorry guys, postponed for now. Any later and i wouldn't be able to un commit to the rooms.
