1.
Looks like a stiff truss rod was the issue. I was a bit braver with it yesterday (couldn't find the WD-40 unfortunately; it literally is bicep-busting to turn the truss rod) and I have the neck nice and straight now.
Hi. I have read several posts like this, over the last few months. I'm sure a lot of people know this but some may not. When I was in short trousers I was shown by an old fella who was associated with the dark art of guitar fixing, how to put a back-bend into a neck before adjusting it. I think I may have seen details on here at some point, so it might be worth having a scout around to see if it could be found. I do it all the time, to avoid shearing the rod/stripping the thread. Cheers.
  2. You can tell it's cold and frosty out there - loads of posts from people staying indoors - me included!!! I wish to Hijack this thread and offer a Full Stop and Semi - Colon up for grabs. Not used that much, Black with white spaces - the Semi Colon has been used in a bass clef but hardly shows any wear. Am up for trades - WHY??
  3.
Same. My first amp in 1981, £30 out a charity shop for 50w head & matching 2x12 cab - way too quiet for the band I'd just joined, I thought it was complete crap. It's still in the drummer's mum's basement, for all I know. Jon.
Yep, I had one of those for a while - all I remember of it is what a dead clinical clunky sound it had. Couldn't get anything out of it I liked. Went on to get a Simms Watt combo with . . . . . . . . . . . . . . reverb. WOW Teisco guitar, that my mate had in the band - wouldn't have given you 6/- (30p) for it - thought is was pants. Now. . . . . $£$£$£$££ Nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be!!!!!!!!!!
  4. This made me chuckle on this cold and frosty morning. Went to a gig last year, small village hall type venue, that we were going to do a live recording at and after going on and on to the rest of the lads about making sure that nothing was forgotten, arrived and set up the kit. Almost all done, heading for the final fence and then started to panic when I couldn't see my head, which I used to cart around in an orange Rotosound bag (how rock&roll!). After much cursing, decided I must have left it at home - 15 miles away! Found it inside the front door. Now, every time we load up. . . . . . "Have you remembered your amp??"
  5. Guild B301-F 'bout as black as you can get!! Even the strings are black!! Very old school, very Jazz! Mmm, Nice!! Aside from the little chip on the head, it is in great nick for it's age! Cheers.
  6.
Does it come with the chrome covers? Andy
Hi. Yes Chrome covers are included
I'm pretty tempted - open to trades?
Hi. If it was something really unusual, that I have never had, perhaps but I have a lot of stuff and I am really trying to rationalise what I have got, what I play/rehearse with and what I gig. What do you have in mind? Cheers.
  7.
Mine has been having a thrashing at practice recently. I love the warmth and thickness it has. The pickups are so loud in humbucker mode too. Tuning stays perfect in standard, drop D or drop C. It really is a lovely bit of engineering. I just wish it had a chamfer for my left arm.
I'm guessing you mean right arm. If you had played a Ric for any length of time, you would think your Forty was as soft as that tissue that Labrador puppies like! The later ones are more rounded but I have to say that I've never had any comfort issues with my earlier ones. How about 10 minutes with this. No - Don't do it!!
  8. I saw Rich about 3 weeks ago, doing a party in a posh hotel in Leicester. I bought his Tune bass - let me have a go on it through his Genz rig and then handed over his hallowed Status - cracking bass. He is very well, busy and recently moved, so as a previous post said, he is probably up to his neck, at the mo'. Hope he pops back soon - great bloke. Cheers.
  9.
New addition - 1983 blade...
"Chalky", you made it!! I'll bet the weather up there, is not as warm as down here and down here it's freezing! Hope you and Noel get on well together - he has a VERY wide taste in music so you'll be up to all sorts of things that you I never did. All the best. Dad!
  10.
Peter Cook I met a guy last year who was restoring a Peter Cook thunderbird, he has been listing his progress on another forum
Yep, that's Kenny!! A real character and a big PC fan. I know of four basses and one guitar and a 12 & 6 twin - not much progress since Kenny and I started the quest. There are, of course, the famous ones that he made for the stars, it's the others I am interested in. There must be somebody out there who has one. Maybe there is someone, who is perhaps not signed up on here yet - a lurker. If so, sign up and join in. . . . . . Please!! Cheers.
  11. Still looking for Peter Cook guitars and basses. If anyone knows of one, please drop me a line. Hope someone out there can help. I am trying to compile a list of some of the basses and guitars that the great Peter Cook made. At this point I shall say that no Dudley Moore cracks are required!!!! A rare pic of Peter, with "some other bloke"!! This was his shop. After much trawling, there really isn't much to be found. I have been communicating with Nick, doctor of the bass, who had a Peter Cook Axis but swapped it for a double bass and now no longer knows where it is. I have also had contact with three other owners of Peter Cook instruments but would love to find some more. If anyone owns a Peter Cook, or knows someone who does, please drop me a line. There must be someone out there that has a Peter Cook or knows of one. Cheers.
  12.
I have an album out today with Guitarist/Composer Dann Glenn. Really enjoyed these sessions!! Electric (Digital Download) Monkey's Humping In The Snow (mp3 sample from my website)
I just loved this. Never in a zillion years, could I play like this but I really hope you take this as a compliment. I love Gino Vanelli. Your track really made me think of the band. Going to get your album. Cheers.
  13. Great afternoon. Never been to one of these before but would definately go again. Met some nice people and managed to put a few user names to some faces, although some remain a mystery - perhaps we sould do "Paddington Bear" type name tags next time. DaveC had some really nice gear and a newly acquired Roland Bass Synth pedal, fitted to a Cort. Some great sounds. Simon had some very nice basses and from the same family, a self built, completed in five days. Most impressed! The Barefaced cab really impressed me - so small and yet so powerful - very tempting. A few lads in the corner, noodling of five and six strings had a lot of attn, as we gathered round to watch. Too many strings for me! First time I had seen a GUS in the flesh and found a Yamaha from the same owner, that was heavier than some of my basses! Simon took a great shot of my twin - the guy playing it in the pic, standing next to DaveC, had a very nice MIJ Jazz with period tuners fitted - lovely to play but had a issue with the badck pup. Hope you get it sorted All in all, a well worth event. If you get chance to go to one in your area - make the effort, I'm sure you will enjoy it. Look forward to the next one. Cheers.
  14.
Yeah i'm the same i've been lurking on these boards for a month or two looking for a classic sb type bass, also the student loan lying in my bank account is a massive help. Still going?

Has this bass been sold already, or are you still open to offers? (I live in Manchester).
As I have made a couple of recent expensive purchases, to add to the collection - some things are going to have to go, some of which are SB's. I sort of worked my way up the list, starting with a cracking SB600 and finished with 900 and a 1000, so I may start with the 600. If anyone is looking for an SB, sit tight and I'll have a rumage around. Will try and come back middle of next week. Cheers.

  16.
Hi everyone - I'm having a clear out and this weekend I'm going to retreive my red Westone "The Rail" from a friend who borrowed it from me to learn to play bass about 10 years ago - quickly gave up - and has been storing it for me since. I bought it new from a music shop when I was on holiday in Italy in what must have been the mid 80's? 1985? I will post some pictures once I've got it back. I think this is a bit or a rarity and know that in the eyes of many, a pinnacle of Jap Crap, but I'm sure someone somewhere may be interested in it. I have no idea what it is worth and I've not seen it for the past 10 years. It was in reasonable nick when I lent it and was cocooned in its silver and black gig bag (as I remember it?). I'm open to offers and will post pictures once I've got my grubby hands back on it. For those of you who don't know here's a reminder http://www.westone.info/reviews/reviewrailbass.html http://www.westone.info/railbass.html http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=73166&st=20 Sorry - forgot forum etiquette and rules - price is £300 o.n.o. Back with photos early next week. Derek Retrieved it now - photos posted - completely forgot that pickup had been upgraded to what looks like a split coil DiMarzio with micro toggle switch - original pickup in plastic bag sitting on case (found in case pocket) so could be returned to original if needs be.
Have a cheeky bump on me, as you used one of my posts for reference. Good price for a rare red one, most were black - original case, as well. Good luck with the sale - may have another go with mine, if you find a buyer. Cheers.
  17. Hi. I've actually seen this actual bass, very close up. Looks like the real deal. Action seemed a little on the high side and I think the strings are of the same period as the bass!! Could do with a bit of a clean Not sure I would want to part with anything like that amount of money. Horses for courses, perhaps someone elses cup of tea. Cheers.
  18. Hi. Peter Cook was doing this, Donkey's years ago. See XLR in the dodgy pic with Peter and "some other bloke". This powered the actives, from this power pack and had a feed out to a Jack. This is an actual Peter Cook unit and this one belongs to someone who had a Axis Bass, many years ago and now uses it to power another custom bass, made by Ray Cooper. Cheers.
  19. Hi. Looks like I'll be able to make it now. I will bring something that is interesting and unique. Cheers.
  20.
Hey all! I am a newbie here but hope to be around awhile. I have seen this site referred to in a number of places so I thought I'd check it out. I like it. I have been playing acoustic guitar for around 35 years, but only started learning on bass about 2.5 years ago. Always wanted to learn, and my daughters gave me the motivation to take the plunge :-) All 3 of them are musical, and I taught all 3 of them to play guitar. 2 of them play the piano, one of which is amazing at keyboards - the other is awesome on acoustic and electric guitar - as well as saxophone. Oh, they sing and dance too... Anyway, to be able to spend fun time with them I thought that I could learn bass and we could all play together - which has worked out really well. We don't get to practice together as much as I'd like as we are all so busy, but we do whenever we get the chance! We have also co-written several songs together so far. I started out with a Squire P bass, which I do really still like to play, but then after about a year, I got an Ibanez SR505 which I Love to play! While I am still a beginner on bass, I can honestly say that I have practiced pretty much every day since I got the Squire - usually anywhere from 30 min to an hour or so each day. I can get along pretty well with rock, country, and gospel, but I most enjoy jazz and especially playing the blues! During my middle and high school years I also played trumpet, so I can read music, but often use tab with guitar (have been a bit lazy about memorizing where all the notes are on the fretboard well enough to play well reading - and tab is so easy to do.... ) We hope to perform together someday -we even came up with a name "Don't Fret" - but so far we've just performed at home for ourselves and family so far. We have an offer to perform at our church, so hopefully that will happen in the coming year. What I'd really like to do is be part of a band that gigs once in awhile. Time is the biggest factor right now - I have a day job, a wife, many animals, and 3 teen daughters who are involved in tons of things. But - they are getting older and will be off to college before long. Then, there is the fear factor. To be honest, the idea of performing live half thrills me and half scares me to death! But - I want to do it. I do want to be sure that I am good enough too. How do you tell when you are ready? So many people I have read say to just go for it and expect you'll mess up but you'll learn from it and get better. I suppose that is true, but easier said than done... I am open to any words of wisdom or encouragement from those of you who know way more than I do about all this. In fact that's why I'm here - to learn - and contribute when and if I can. And judging by the posts I've read so far, I'll make some friends along the way... Looking forward to meeting you all, and learning as much as I can.
Hi, Welcome on board. This caught my eye, as I had a friend who live in Lansing, for about 30 years. Always plenty to see on here and any contributions are always welcome. Cheers.
  21. Looks great and a lot lighter than I thought it would be. Top job! Just dug out a pic of his dad. You know what I mean. Cheers.
  22. More pics, as requested. Decided to remove the plate and get shots of the pots, as asked. Photos not A1 but as good as I can get at the mo' It is a '78. The staining next to the small ding, is under the varnish and not wear. I've tried to show "warts and all" and on the pic, this looks a lot worse than it does in reality. This is on the upper bout, towards the bottom end. Just had a quick go on my small practice amp - Sweet. You can see the thumbrest, just, in one of the shots - that was the one that came with it - I removed it, as a preference but now can't lay my hands on the screws. Still looking! As I said when first posted, comes with a standard case but for a few $$$ more, it will come with the Fender moulded case. Any more questions, fire away. Cheers.
  23. Just bought a bass off Rich - picked it up at a gig he was doing. Great bloke - easy deal - very pleased. Let me have a go on his Status, through his Genz. Mmm, NICE. Thanks, Rich - hope to catch you in Nottingham, at some point. All the best. Cheers.

  25.
Lovely bass! Any pics of the pots, please? Just want to see the dates stamped on them if you don't mind
Hi. I realise that a lot of people strip instruments down to the last component, in order to prove that is is what it should be. I had the scratchplate off when I first had it, during a wipe down and string change. All seemed to tally but I didn't take any shots. Seems a shame to take it apart again. If you intend to buy it and that is the only stumbling block, I will take the plate off. Buying? Cheers.
