Whenever I hear the name Kelly Clarkson I remember the chest-waxing scene from The 40 Year Old Virgin. Classic!
Yes, that's what I thought too - but at my age (and guessing that Ms. Sarah is a young thing) it would just be pervy
If being pervy isn't acceptable on the internet then we're all done for. -
But... It is all about the musician aint it? If the musician feels this is how they want to play it, I say let 'em! [...] Where would we be today if people had always played what was "correct" for the time being?
I agree with your philosophy. But I prefer not to slap on blues songs, not because anyone would disapprove - it's my band so I can do what I like - but because when I play blues I really try to support the singer, guitarist or keyboard player depending on who's soloing by i) not getting in the way or drawing attention away from them, and ii) building or dropping intensity behind them. I don't approach every song as an opportunity to show off. I think a lot of the time that attitude can be a mistake.
So here to go... the newly single.. newly happy and independant-womanesque Sarah5string.
 *smitten* -
It's alright - there are plenty of people who like and play slap on here. No need to go anywhere else. There's a valid point about tasteless playing, ie. playing something that doesn't sound good in context. I slapped the hell out of my bass on Saturday night at a 3-hour gig in front of random punters. I got nothing but compliments. But when we threw in a couple of blues tunes did I slap a single note? No. That would make me throw up.

Send off a message to Channel 4 and another one to Russell Jackson directly. You never know! -
Why was the little skinhead going in so close to the other guy's face? It looks like he was trying to kiss him.
We opened for them at the Jazz Cafe earlier this year and had the pleasure of having dinner with the drummer before the show.
Bernard Purdie is my favourite drummer of all time! You lucky bastard. Well done! Guestlist me up, dude!

If my tenner was surplus to requirements could someone pick a Phillippines-based charity or project to donate it to? I don't see why people are arguing about Jake right now. It doesn't matter why he did it. He did it. Other people came to the rescue and sorted it out. He cooperated. Whether you have any personal interaction with him online in the future is up to you - and so long as it's within the rules of whichever forum and within the law, surely it's a completely personal decision what form that interaction would take. People who want to cut him some slack, cut him some slack. People who want nothing to do with him, have nothing to do with him. People who want to bollock him, it wasn't your money he wandered off with so it's not directly your business - but it's up to you what you do. I won't be buying anything from him or posting supportive messages on band/recording feedback threads but I won't be attacking him either. -
Not a lot in it, though - but I do have plenty of eyebrow...
Lovely bass. (Snazzy waistcoat too - only word I could thing of to describe it)
Or a drink/smoke, etc.
Aye. I normally prefer having a chat to heroes of mine and getting inspired that way. I'd feel a bit rude asking to sit in. My old bass mentor used to enjoy calling me out from the audience and dropping me in it though. Sometimes you just crash and burn.
We have setup a fund which has more then enough in it to send the bass to the buyer in the phillipenes, Gman will then mail it to the buyer.
Can someone put this at the top of the thread so that people who don't pay attention like me don't put money into a fund that is overflowing? -

£10 donated. Hope it helps. Glad (and extremely impressed) that you guys managed to sort this out so quickly. Also, balls to Jake for owning up and sending the bass in the end. -
I'm just curious if all Bass-tards (bassists) get slagged off by their smaller, weaker and more feminine cousins: the G-tards (g**tarists).
Never happens to me. If it did I'd just laugh in their face until it got awkward and they had to walk away. I don't feel I have to prove myself to anyone else anymore and I don't see music as a competitive sport, so I wouldn't get into a slagging match.

Don't ask to sit in. Invite them to an after hours jam instead. Don't forget to pick their brains as much as possible without being a knob.

Led Zeppelin - yes AC/DC - yes Velvet Revolver - yes Alanis Morrisette - no Lenny kravitz - yes Stereophonics - no Reef - definitely not Pretenders - maybe Doobie Brothers - yes Janis Joplin - why not Sorry, I just did that in my head and thought I had to share it. Good luck with the search. You shouldn't have much trouble. Healthy range of influences! -
Not wanting to lower the tone (too much... hehehe) but, bloody hell...
I second that emotion!

How do you find out whether a teacher is any good?
Watch them live and then beg them to teach you if they blow your mind.

Making a boring bassline more interesting?
The Funk replied to arabassist's topic in Theory and Technique
I agree with all the above - even the stuff that seems to contradict the other stuff. My suggestion would therefore be not to do anything too drastic. By all means experiment at home but you already know that slapped octaves on it would sound awful. Have a good, long listen to If You Want Me To Stay by Sly & The Family Stone. It's mainly root notes with the occasional passing tone but the feel of it is completely different to With Or Without You. You could try taking the feel of the Sly song and laying it underneath the U2 song. It could be just different enough to be an interesting interpretation of a classic song without ruining it. -
I use distortion with a wah for some of our tunes (and we're a funk band). You can use it anywhere.
I play guitar a lot of the time anyway - I don't really see how this will work with bass technique though?
Then you're clearly not playing enough drums at the moment. (Yes, get a teacher. As for slap, it's easy, fun, overrated and the only reason people think I'm any good. Go for it.)
-
Nice voice and cool song! Now chuck the drummer and percussionist. (OK, if you like your criticism a bit more constructive than that get the drummer and shaker-shaker to slow down and chill out - and not get in the way of the acoustic guitar/vocals - and turn them down in the mix a bit too.)
-
Fretting hand slap techniques. I think it developed from over-exuberant fretting hand muting and crossed with hammer-ons to become something else. Check out some Louis Johnson (not because he uses it really, just because his playing's awesome).
