You obviously haven't heard of Rob Halford of Judas Priest - he only listens to his own band's music.
Does he listen to it backwards and then kill himself afterwards? I was going to say I'm quite familiar with Rob Halford but I didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.
I dislike the sound and 90% of guitarists who play them are pretentious douche bags IMO.
Can't help but agree!

It'd be a bit weird if his favourite music in the world to listen to was his own - and even if that was true, it'd come across as obnoxiously arrogant to say so in public!
Drax sports and social club near selby
I had the best Sunday lunch of my life in Selby. Not relevant but just had to share. Good luck on the cab front - I'm at the wrong end of the country to be any help.

Nothing wrong with playing guitar (or keys)! It makes you a better bassist. I'd recommend playing (or at least programming) some drums too, while you're at it.

At 4:14, I think that has to be the longest intro ever. I couldn't decide if the song was the sountrack to the video or if the video was the video for the song. If that's what you were going for, then you've succeeded. I enjoyed the sounds, grooves and melodies but I have to say I got bored and started skipping ahead. If I was at a big summer outdoor festival and you guys were playing that at sunrise and I'd been partying all night, that song would be incredible. So in a different context I'd love it.
Ok... I put the link back in the first post.. I was just a bit disappointed. I placed in on another bass-related forum in Holland and I had 120 downloads within a couple of days and a lot of reactions (with criticism I could do something with..) I posted here on the British bass-forum which is supposed to be huge with hundreds of bass-players and I got one reaction.. I hope it's not a continental grudge :-)
Hah, no. It's not a continental grudge. It's just that most people on these forums spend their time either in the For Sale discussions or arguing in Off-topic. Most of the other discussions in Recording don't have many replies so don't take it personally! The other difference is that the British don't like to criticise other people - even if they hate what you do!
We'd all like `our own voice' but that is easier said that done
I don't know about that. I think someone with as much talent and dedication to the bass as wombat should be able to come up with his own voice fairly easily. Just stop listening to the influences for a while and come up with your own tone and licks. It'll happen after a while. Or if you can't wait that long, take Jaco's licks, with Marcus' tone and with Stanley's technique. Then swap it all round. Wombat can clearly play his arse off so by the time the next album is ready, he should have people on internet forums asking him how he came up with his style/technique/sound/licks. Still, I really enjoyed ALL of the playing on the record and was very impressed by it.
Playing along with a drum machine can't quite do what playing with a metronome can - a metronome is a much purer form of time so it puts all the onus on you to make the music with it.
Agreed. Where you say "a metronome is a much purer form of time", I'd say "it's easy to keep time when you have a 'perfect' drum machine playing a groove for you - harder when it's just a series of unaccented clicks". If you want to improve your time, play with a metronome. If you want to have something to noodle along to without the hassle of a drummer, use a drum machine (or sequence them on a computer - who actually uses a drum machine these days?).

To-Mera live in London and Wolverhampton (supporting Kings X)
Cool! I was thinking of trying to get along to the London Kings X gig! Now, even more reason to do so.... Any chance of a +1 lol!
+2? -
Agree that the P-Nut is the nicest of the signature basses but the Rockbass Fortress Fretless looks outstanding!
Is there any reason not to just use my thumb?
That's how I used to play when I started. Got a good tone that's different to fingers or pick. Only problem I found was speed. If you can get it fast enough for your needs, stick with it. I still drop it in from time to time.
No disrespect but I just don't 'get' Cream. [...] White Room is damn fine.
You get White Room, you get Cream. The problem with some of Cream's recordings is that they were rushed in the studio or let down live because they couldn't hear each other - sh*t PA, no monitors etc.

Resident in Willesden Green are good.

I love Jack Bruce's bass tone. I used to max out my old practice amps and wreck the speakers to recreate it at home. I've got a different sound now but I still love that 60s Marshall stack tone.

Was this the same thing that The Culture Show rolled out back in December? That was too short - but it made me want to visit that bar and chat with the guys.

The only advice I can give you about finding your own style is to find your own tone/sound first and then mix up all your Jaco/Stanley/Marcus influences until they start to sound like one person. A lot of the similarity to your influences was not just with the notes but also with the sound of the bass/amp/effects. You should put the link back up there. It might take a while to get responses but any feedback is good for a musician.

I've seen the Line 6 gigged. I'd recommend that one.

4 strings sound better than 5 string basses. Discuss.
The Funk replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
Me too. Has there ever been a 5-string double bass?
Yeah. They predate the bass guitar by about 150 years. -
Ha! That's bloody marvellous! Got me wondering tho' - maybe it's that guy that I'm remembering, not Bootsy. Sadly it's been a long time since my vinyl saw the light of day, after the drive belt (or rubber band, if you prefer) on my aged turntable stretched!
I love that clip. We do a version of Red Hot Mama too - it's so much fun. Get a new record player! They're not that expensive these days. Otherwise, maybe you could donate your vinyl to me!

No difference - except I've heard that Stingray 5s sound very different from Stingray 4s. -
Somewhere I've got a Parliament double live album c'77, gatefold sleeve with loads of tiny pics inside - can't put my hands on it right now, but I remember seeing quite a few of Bootsy with a Rick...
Check out this performance from 1977 in Houston. The bassist (not Bootsy) has a Rick.

Rick(enbacker) James, bitch!

I was at the gig that all the video clips are from. I was with a girl who wanted to "go home early" so I didn't stick around for the second set or say hello. It was a cool band and cool gig though. Great tone from the Thumb and Baby Blue too!
