1. You wouldn't have to replace all the valves at once! If it's a preamp valve, just swap it for a new one.
2.
failed or failing power tube?
I thought it could have been a failed or failing valve too.
3.
the implication is not just that Nick is a sad f**ker for collecting basses, but also incapable of pulling.
I'm a sad f***er who is also incapable of pulling. At least I'm not that gnome who works in the Bass Cellar. I make a habit of talking down to him and never buying anything whenever I happen to be passing through. He is a cock even if his joke wasn't intended to be rude. The big guy's not much better - but at least he's not the gnome!
4.
‘Its what’s best for the song’ [...] I get that people have certain professional standards and want to deliver but please let’s not forget that playing something out of left field offers some new flavours, some new experiences. If we all just play ‘good enough’, nobody will ever get better.
I agree with you but I don't think this should really be characterised as a complaint against bass players for not taking risks - I think it should be a complaint about bland, inoffensive, mechanical songwriting. If what's best for the song is usually something that fits well, then if the song is boring and derivative, what fits better than a boring and derivative bass part?
5.
There is no perfect time.
Agreed. I'd call them up and tell them you'd like to meet up to discuss the future of the band and your place in it. I voted for the beginning of a rehearsal 'cos that's probably the easiest time to get them all in a room together but really, just tell them you want to get them all in a room together to discuss something important. They might have an idea of what the conversation will be about but what's wrong with that?
6. I'm considering going the other way and getting a 2-string
7. Looks fantastic. I had my eyes on these a while ago. Hmm... *ponders*
8.
Not again! We need a smiley for yawn!
A yawnie?
9. Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins, Jack Bruce.
10.
all it says is to adjust the gain nob so that it is set just before the amp clips, and then adjust the volume as necessary. thats pretty much it.
That's pretty much all you need. Read the sticky at the top of this forum about Gain and Volume if you're confused about what each of them does.
11.
hang on. recycled plastic over a maple body? So whats the point of the plastic bits? If you have a maple neck and maple body whats so green about screwing a lump of plastic on the front and back? If you can source the maple sustainably why not just use that?
Exactly!
12. I'm impressed by the photoshoppers - and the guy who spotted my Vans! Good spot!
13.
For me recycled = cheap (in monetary terms) so what has really shocked me is the price of them - over £800 for a guitar
The Bare Knuckle pickups are pretty damn amazing - and not that cheap. EDIT: I wouldn't buy one. Ethically sourced wood though, something like that might sway me.
14. A friend of mine has a Wesley. Pretty decent bass. Well done, China.
15. Have you got just the one or a pair?
16. That looks wicked! Well done.
17. If you get on with them like you say are you sure you want to leave? If you're desperate to get out, then you don't have to be honourable about it - but it would be a nice/decent thing to do.
18. That last one's ideal. I tried to get hold of the Quik Lok equivalent in the run-up to the gig but there aren't any in stock in the UK at the moment. Didn't think of Thomann!
19. Thanks for the feedback, guys! The main thing bugging me is the Zeroplane poster at the back - belonging to my friends' band who were on after us. The music stand looks a little naff but it was the only stand we could think of for our singer's Kaoss Pad.
20. There were a couple of photographers at our gig at Bush Hall on Saturday night. A few cool photos came out of it. I was just wondering what you guys think of them. A couple of my favourites are: and The rest of the photos from one photographer are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8910339@N05/s...157608164263796 I haven't made arrangements with the other photographer yet but once I have I'll stick up some of his too. It's the first time we've really made an effort to dress well (and in a coordinated manner) for a gig. I think it worked out!
21.
Does anyone know whether it would attract sufficient interest to make it worth putting on Ebay?
Can't offer any specific insight but as a general rule I'd say stick anything on ebay. There's bound to be at least one other person in the world who wishes they had it.
22. Best gig ever last night. Bush Hall (nice, big venue with a nice, big stage), where everyone on the bill was a friend of ours: Saul Ashby (singer-songwriter who was the drummer in my last band), Zeroplane (my cousin's band, featuring 2 band members from another band I was in) and Pete Brown (mentor to us all). Each set was excellent and it was definitely our best so far. Taking it easy today in a post-gig mellow contentment.
23. I met him and chatted to him about it over a cup of tea. Very nice guy, very good bass player and really should be doing some more high profile gigs. Apart from a few problems with the way it was being run, I think he'd just got worn out by the partying side of things and wanted to live a cleaner life.
24. So, when someone's called a guitar hero or bass hero is it because we literally put our lives on the line for this music?
25.
Not really as defined as the sequenced track though is it.... I mean it's kool but you could pick that up with a bit of practice.
Sure but he's actually already put in the practice to get it up to speed - so good for him. And just for the record, the original rack is not sequenced. It was played on a keyboard using a slap bass sample sound.
