1. I really like the pics. Sure, they could have been improved with all the suggestions above but I think they look really cool. Blondie, but now and English. EDIT: Awesome gear btw!
2. Don't worry - this is the right forum for questions like this. All of Chris's advice above is excellent. I've watched the video. Your left-hand positioning's horrendous! (It's just like mine was before I realised that's why I couldn't move my wrists for a day after a long gig). First off, your thumb is way too high up. It shouldn't go above half-way round the back of the neck. Secondly, you should be using your thumb to pivot when you go from string to string (and from low to high on the fretboard). Thirdly, get your elbows out. They're wedged into your ribs at the moment. Move them out away from your body. Fourthly, try to keep your wrist as straight as possible (in line with your forearm). And then last of all, use your ring finger together with your little finger to fret the octave. It might help, it might not.
3. Travel business class. You can take it onto the plane with you. But seriously, last time I flew with my bass in the SKB BassSafe, I found the locks busted open and the internal leather patches on the gig bag slashed open when I arrived at the other end. Apparently padlocks are a no-no. But then how do you keep people from stealing your stuff? So, I don't have a solution, unfortunately.
4. Is there something wrong with just going R, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, Second Octave?
5. In my band I get everyone to follow me. As the bassist you're the link man between everything else and if you get good everyone will play off you.
6. My post wasn't meant as a joke btw.
7. Stop playing with guitarists - now.
8.
It might be worth putting a mic at the back of the room and feeding that to the tape outputs but not the PA.
Might have spare condensor depending on who turns up so would do that. Not feeding a PA though - recording my drummer's jazz trio!
9. I'm doing this on Thursday evening: mixer -> stereo mic input on camera. No mixing / syncing required later.
10. Cassette!?! Demo and/or reputation/recommendation from someone whose opinion they respect/welcome.
11. Nomination for best subheading ever!
12.
haha no - that's the answer who were the last 'uknown' band to be put on the game last year.... hoepfully we'll get something cool like an ac/dc tour lol
Ah right! I'm sure it's only a matter of time now for you guys. Well done on Guitar Hero! I'm going to get my cousins to learn your parts!
13. I've seen Ray, Luke and Urb live - all 3 were excellent and very funky! Luke's also a pretty decent backing vocalist. I've had a listen to Gwil's band online but haven't caught them live yet. They're very cool. There's that Welsh bassist from Pembrokeshire (I think) who plays in a funk band. I remember thinking his band was really good. I've checked out some of Alun's stuff online - the guy's really a fantastic player. But the guy who freaks me out with some of his playing is Dood! I think it's a combination of him being excellent and that his style's evolved from metal, which I haven't really ever been involved in (with the exception of some Sabbath-y stuff).
14.
Soloing isn't really my style .
For bass solos you can always do what you'd normally do but with a few more embellishments.
15. You're on tour with AC/DC? Well done!
16. Damn, I thought I was in with a chance on this one: Westfield 3/4 size Precision-copy, brand new, £69.
17. The song's so simple you can do whatever you like for your solo. There's nothing really to worry about. Just solo in your style.
18. For The Love Of Money - The O'Jays
19. Randy Jackson (youngest brother), Jermaine Jackson or Randy Jackson (American Idol judge).
20. I got a call to come down to a blues jam tonight. Went down there. Got offered the house bassist job as I was leaving. It's not because I'm good - it's because there were no other bassists there. Yes, it's real easy to get gigs as a bassist.
21.
Which is exactly why I prefer Copeland, because of his "exuberance".
Same here. I couldn't use the word flair because they both have it. Character might be a better word but it's not like Vinnie's playing is exactly character-less. So exuberance was the word I settled on.
22. Well done! Enjoy it and get as many stories from back in the day out of them as possible.
23. I love the Microbass series. Don't get it for Duff's sound though. A non-valve distortion pedal and a hint of chorus would do the trick. The RB400 has a growl button if I remember correctly (called G.I.V.E). I used to have one - good amp! EDIT: The Line6 probably won't give you Duff's sound exactly but it will give you a whole bunch of great amp sounds.
24. Colaiuta is definitely Copeland-influenced and is a fantastic drummer, much more technically competent but lacking some of Copeland's exuberance.
