1.
welcome welcome to the jazz bass fawners!!!! Ive gone through over 50 basses of all types and come full circle to the good ol passive jazz bass. It just works y'know!
You can kind of see the Precision->Telecaster and Strat->Jazz link even now; Ps and Teles are bloody great at what they do, but for versatility and finesse it's a Strat or a Jazz. If I were in a functions band or something on six-string I'd almost cetainly be on a Strat, and I LOVE my Squier Jazz, but for certain styles of music (the full-on rock band i was last in, for instance) Precision all the way and there's nothing to beat belting out big chords on a Telecaster.
  2. Cabs-wise I'd agree with the previous poster, there's a reason you'll see most pro bass players with sod-off big rigs and that's because you need to move a lot of air to get a decent bass sound! Personally I'd look at either a 4x10" or a 1x15" as your 'basic' rig, and maybe splash on an additional 2x10" for bigger gigs. As far as heads go, in the mid-price range you've got tons to choose from - Hartke are generally good, the two you've already mentioned would also do you fine - as a cheeky pimp, I'm also possibly selling a Laney B1 head with footswitch, which is hands-down the most versatile head I've ever played through (SO much control over the sound, plus footswitchable graphic EQ, preshape and effects loop - and cool blue LEDs ). You need to run a compressor into the front of it to stop the protection circuitry from tripping if you slap the bass at all, but I'd throw one in... Sorry for the hijack!
  3. I'll weigh up my Laney B1 when I get home on Monday, I can guarantee it weighs less than your Marshall but how much less I'm not sure - if my guitar amp and/or bass sells as well I'm seriously interested. Oh, quick edit - have you (or anyone else here, come to that) put guitar through a VB400? 'Cos if that sounds alright I could ditch having a guitar rig altogether...
  4. I know it's a guitar amp, but it still counts as backline right? I'll get some pictures when I get home on Monday, but I think I'm now resigned to selling this to tax the car and start re-building a working PA rig to start making some money for a change, so I'm getting it up before I change my mind. It's a VERY loud valve 30W into two 10" speakers, covered in Peavey's black tweed finish (CLASSY!) with a proper Peavey fitted cover. USA-made, with pretty new tubes in there; the control panel's got a fair few rust 'pinpricks' but the tweed's in great condition. Like I say, pics to follow but I'm in Walsall, West Midlands if anyone wants to have a play.
  5.
That bass is an SB441; imported by House Music in the mid-90s. They came in red, black (and purple I think).
I shall bow to your knowledge on that Nicky (although 441 does ring vague bells, now you mention it) as sadly there's no model number in the neck pocket. As far as price goes, I'd be liking offers around the three hundred quid mark really - this thing's pretty much unique in this country so I don't think that's TOO OTT!
  6. IMO neither's 'better', and there's a ton of session guys out there who could play rings around either of them (and who I probably wouldn't want to listen to doing so)...in terms of 'who would I rather listen to', almost certainly Flea. I grew up in the mid-late 90s, when a lot of 'big' bands (Nirvana, Oasis et al) were doing very little exciting bass-wise, but Flea's work on BSSM and One Hot Minute ('Aeroplane' has some lovely bass stuff on it) kind of kept funkiness alive in mainstream rock.
  7.
Midlands people! Is there currently any plans for another bass bash around birmingham? i know i just missed the wood and tronics bass bash at bass direct, however i was wondering if there was anything going on a little bit more north?
I iz newbie, but I'd be up for something like that!
If anyone would be up for such an event, i work at a rehearsal room in walsall, and would be able to get rooms for free or at very little cost at certain times..
That sounds good - which studio is it then dude? I'm in Walsall myself at the minute, living up by the brewery - I've run one-off jam nights and stuff at the Wheatsheaf before now, who're quite amenable to it.

  10.
If you want to nail the model down and fancy removing the neck, the model series should be stamped in the neck pocket. Found this out when i removed the neck of my Bass Collection which I thought was an SB325, turns out it's an SB405
Cheers Bunny, shall give that a go tonight!
  11. Well, I'm massively downsizing the collection and this is the last 'good' one to go on the block - just bought a Squier Silver Series Jazz which I shouldn't have done but absolutely fell in love with! It's a late-90s Japanese-made job (bought new in 1998, IIRC), they weren't in the Bass Collection catalogues over here and according to the shop I bought it in (Bass Centre in Birmingham) it was imported by accident - I've certainly never seen another one like it! The body's got a few little dinks and the scratchplate's got a few, well, scratches, but overall it's in good condition and sounds superb. The dual P-type pickups and two-band active electronics can give you pretty much any sound you need and for bassists who want to stand out the red sparkle finish and mirror 'plate look brilliant under stage lights. I did a bit of digging when I bought it and found out it's apparently an SB340 model, but Googling brings up precious little - according to the distributor at the time they were available in Japan in red, silver and purple finishes, but as I say, I've never seen another one! Not sure of the worth of it (I paid about £450, if I remember rightly), so make me an offer I can't understand!
  12. Don't suppose a Laney B1 head would tickle your fancy for part-ex would it? It's certainly lighter and more compact than the Marshall, not MarkBass-light though...
