I'm blushing... Thanks for the praise. Does us a world of good. It's been a bit of an uphill struggle recently keeping the band going with not much interest outside friends and family. This makes ploughing the unfashionable furrow we've chosen much easier. damn spelling

I had a 715X for a bit. I bought it new for just over £600 a couple of years ago. Nice amp but incredibly heavy and awkward to lug around. Had to If you're going to gig or cart it to rehearsals there are plenty of options. I (and my back) was incredibly glad to swap to a seperate head and cabs. The TC Electronic BG500 combos are another similar combo around that price that are worth looking at.

I gaffa mine to the handles on the side of the TC cab.

I tried one for the first time a few weeks ago when I picked up my bass that was in for some work. Great, full bodied snarly tone. I was very impressed. If they do a model that has the dirtiness I like I'd certainly consider one itf the Orange Terror ever packs up.
I showed our lads in our band too and they said we should cover it! the worlds gone mad!! booooooya
I told the chaps this and they were made up. If you do cover it I demand audio proof. It would make our day. I can send you my brilliant lyrics. I believe Bilbo may have the tab....

What came first: the band, or the bass?
Low End Bee replied to janmaat's topic in General Discussion
I bought a bass to learn the rudimentary stuff on and then join a band. When I was happy that I could find A,D &E and tune the thing I sought others for world musical domination. -
Thanks so much for the comments. We just had a production meeting (tea and a Hob Nob) and are definitely going to do another one soon. The Fellini/Scorsese in the band has decided we are doing this one on location (i.e. outdoors).
-
Thanks chaps. I'd forgotten about this. Time to do another one.

The black one.

I've an urge for us to recruit a multi instrumentalist to add to the guitar, bass and drums format. The trio line up is great fun but sometimes I think a few of our songs would benefit from a bit of keyboards, extra guitar, tambourine, bv's etc.
I'll probably get a mouthful back for saying this, but the Retrovibe Ricky body shape is nothing like a Ricky 4001/3. It's all wrong and upsets my eye. There is something very beautiful about the Ricky shape, but these are nothing like it. I'll have to do a straight comparison with some some similar pics but I would bet money it starts from the lower bout and around the back of the bridge. It's too bulbous and lacks the Rickenbacker beauty.
Mine is beautiful. If you're very nice I'll let you touch it. Bulbous bit and all.. PS Used mine at our last gig on the 29th Jan. The sound man who was also a bass player has now ordered one. It sounded fantastic. I may have to sort a Jeff Beck style forearm chamfer for comfort though.

Two venues I played this year have now closed. One's a Tesco Metro and one is being refurbished as a gastro pub ('cause we're running short of them in West London). Some of the venues on the mainly originals circuit I do are being booked up with a lot more tribute and covers bands. Understandable as it's a financially safer night but it doesn't do me any good.
-
Last gig I was playing the Retrovibe Rickenfaker at £249 and the guitarist had his Alden Bluesline at £125. A proper Tele and Precision were on stage as back ups though .

Best pickups to give a Jazz more presence/authority?
Low End Bee replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
There is a major issue here that perhaps I should have mentioned earlier, Chris. Mrs Clarky She likes my seafoam green Bacchus Jazz more than any bass I have ever owned (and there's been loads!) because of the colour. She has even given it a name which I will not use ("Minty"). I am banned from selling it ever and thus I want to get the most out of it!
Buy a seafoam Precision and bin the Jazz. Problem solved. Shouldn't be a problem for an experienced trader like yourself. -
I bought a maple Precision body from the US about six or seven years ago. It's vey nicely done and solid. It must be a 70s styled body as it weighs more than my amp. It was in a lovely vintage (nicotine) white but it's now in metallic black. The only negative apart from the weight is that the jack routing is slightly too large and isn't covered totally by the scratchplate. It's the one on the right.

I wouldn't play: For Skrewdriver Any remotely religious band Any band that had a QPR, Fulham, Watford, Reading or Luton supporter in it. Apart from that I'd take the job.

Next gig plasters are going on the list. Cut the same fretting finger twice lugging PA and lighting. Last time I dirty my hands with the road crew.
-
Put the lighting and the upgraded PA in the venue last night. It looks amazing. Hope some of you can make it.
-
Absolutely top band. My favourite ever compliment was at a recent gig when a bloke said we were "a bit Supergrass in parts"
-
Very good luck with this mate. Wish I could make it. Hope it goes well.
Hello Ad, Have you got a link to the fella that services you basses and doe he do mods?? I've got a Tokai Rockinbetter that I had put Riki pups and electrics in only to find (annoyingly after I spent a small fortune on Riki parts) when I got the Retrovibe I prefered the tone on that! Now my plan is to put in some MM style pups in the Tokai ... I'm still very impressed with the Retrovibe. I took it to rehearsals with my Joy Divison tribute and it really did the job... nice and twangy on the high end stuff and nice a bit of growl ..... COME ON THE BEE'S
PM'd

I should really have posted this in here in the first place. "Update. I've just picked the RV4 Rickenfaker up from a service. The E string was rattling a bit behind the fret so I guessed (correctly) that the nut was cut slightly too low on the bass side. They've put in a tiny ebony wedge under the nut that has sorted this completely. Also done were a truss rod tweak, fret dress, all pots, switches and jack upgraded, copper shielding of the cavity and interestingly the neck tone control changed to a variable coil tap. It really has completely upped the performance of the bass in every way. I'm chuffed to bits. The action is now fast and low. There were four Ric's in the shop. Two 4001's and two 4003's and the tech said it blew them all away in playability. He was very impressed with it. Hence him doing lots of extra stuff to it that I didn't ask for at no cost! It still sounds more like a turbo charged precision and nothing like a Ric though which is OK by me. The variable coil tap on the neck is great though gives it far too many useable sounds for a bonehead like me. I'm going to give it another gig outing on Saturday"
