Bought Steviedee's Palatino EUB. It arrived this morning in tip top condition, only put it down to type this! A gentleman to deal with, would easily recommend him as a seller!
2.
Yea I saw that. Ridiculously overpriced though.
Thought about getting one of these before I got the second VBC412. What is a good price for a second-hand one of these monsters? How do they compare to the Ampeg 8x10s?
3. Butterscotch is your only real choice-its a classic!
4.
Sorry, my last comment about slaving into a combo was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.... Thanks for your advice guys. If nothing else, you've saved me cooking my amp!!!
Ah, sorry, wasn´t picking up on that-was fairly tired at that stage Best of luck with t And let us know what u decide to do
5. My vote would be 1)VBA400- Amazing.Nuff said. 2) Ampeg SVT 3) Orange 4) Mesa Boogie 400+
6.
Hi, Yes I think thats right. The SVT -410HLF is also the only single (smallish!) 4 ohm cab in the range I'm also frustrated as I need single 4 ohm cab for my SVT amp, I wish some of thier other cabs were 4 Ohm. or the SVT amps has a 8 Ohm output tap for more versatility. Cheers Neil
There are only 2 4ohm 4x10s in Ampeg´s current range, but there were loads of 4ohm cabs up until recently-blame LOUD Tech I guess. There was the BXT410HLF, The BSE410HLF (I have 2 of them), the current B410HLF also. And of ourse the 8x10- all 4ohm cabs. There was also an SVT18 cab at 4 ohm (anyone selling one-NAME YOUR PRICE!!!) I wish Ampegs had a three way impedance selector though-2,4 or 8 ohms-infinite cab config options. And yeah, wish my BSE410HLF-SEs had the grab bars and kick plates that their SVT counterparts have. Still, the flghtcases will have to do. Also, IMO, the best US made 4x10 Ampeg have EVER done! And they look fantastic-love the ´Merc´ type badges on the front! The SVT Classic series is just that-Classc, but knd of boring looking. I much prefer Ampegs with Silver/blue fronts-much cooler and much more vintage/retro looking! Would love to get hold of the SVT-AV and matching 8x10- Old-School Ampeg look and sound! In the words of the prophet MC Hammer, ´Proper!´
7.
Perhaps a crude idea would be to buy an Ampeg BA300, and slave into it. But I have no idea how (bad) that would sound.
...AWFUL! Dont do that mate, whatever you do. If you are going down the Ampeg combo route, try to track down a B2 or B3 combo-both have speaker outs (again, you'd have to check the impedance for them). But I wouldn't recommend doing that-you'll have problems with line levels etc. Honestly, the 450 through an SVT HLF should be plenty loud-you're getting the max output from the amp-and its compact enough to transport. You can always DI for decent sized gigs anyway, so you'll have no hassle being heard (or felt-its an AMPEG!!! )
8. I bought an Epiphone Flamekat guitar from Cash Converters on Ebay about 3 years ago. It was exactly as described. a few wee dings and a crackling pot. Paid 100 quid for it including postage to Ireland. Found out after that it had been modded before sale (active pups installed) Stripped them and the preamp, got a set of Kent Armstrong mini humbuckers, tidied the soldering and wiring, gave her a full set up and wham-the nicest guitar i own and one of the ncest ive ever played or seen! I have a Fender strat, a tele a gibson challenger and a few others-this is a super-Gretsch with an Epi badge! My ultimate rockabilly/surf guitar! Anyways, the point was, I have dealt with them through ebay and have had no ssues at all. my only problem was a week later the b*stards sold the epi case it came in seperately!!! Cant get one now as the model was dicontinued!
9. Pretty sure the SVT450 is a 4 ohm min load. If you add another cab to compliment your 410hlf-you will indeed be like aladdin, surrounded by smoke! An 8ohm cab plus a four brings the load to about 2.6 ohms-well below 4 and not at all safe. and two 4ohm cabs will bring the load to 2ohms-again not the amps min load. best bet would be to get rid of the 410HLF and buy a pair of 410HE´s they are 8 ohm cabs and sound pretty good. Or either an SVT610HLF Or 8x10 With the last two, you´ll never need a second cab Most of the Ampeg tube stuff goes down to 2 ohms, as do the 4 PRO and 2 PRO (maybe the 5PRO?). A few SS Ampegs do too. My b500dr head does anyway
10. I adore my VBA400 rig-nothing but a Panzer Division can make this much noise and mayhem. Put havent tried plugging a 70´s Precision into a Panzer tank yet. Cannot believe how loud it is, or how nice the sound is. The contour switch is amazing. That said, my back doesn´t like the look of it one bit-nor does our roadie and drummer! Weight is a killer, but its worth it. There are some real gems when it comes to valve stuff That said, I have heard some fairly poor valve amps aswell. I owned a Mesa 400+, but it would always give me grief-valves popping, power cutting out etc and it was definately not the monster I expected soundwise. Tried aa SVT VR recently-totally crestfallen with it. Was expecting a monster of a sound-weak as a box of diabetic kittens chasing wool! no oomph at all. Some of the solid state stuff I have owned has been great, and some dire. My Fender 400 Pro head was a fantastic bit of kit, as was my Trace ellot 8x10 combo (no idea of model) Had a GK backlne thing that farted out after a week. Not really a fan of Ashdown, but the mini stack I sold recently was unbelievable.Played loads of gigs with it and it cut through no problem! Laney R4 wasn´t bad either-my first stack, lightweight and big sounding-just a lttle something missing. My current Solid State amp is an Ampeg B500DR digital. Sounts exactly the same as an SVT3 Pro and can even get pretty close to the Classic aswell-though gain tends to differentiate it the more its pushed. I will NEVER get rid of it-cracker of an amp! There is no real bottom line on the issue. Its a subjective thing and there are a million other factors involved the decision making process. weight, cost, value for money, maintenance, storage/transport etc etc Once you get a tone you want-does it really matter if the power section is valve or ss? FWIW, my next and probably final amp purchase will be an Orange Bass Terror-haven´t owned a decent Hybrid before and loving the sound of them.
11. No problem mate. Enjoy, these are great little amps! Colin
12. This is what I got: http://www.thomann.de/ie/phil_jones_briefcase_akku.htm
13. I have this too. Love the cream covering-much nicer than the bog-standard black. Saw the oxblood one too, but to quote Sideshow Bob- I had to go for that retro-50's charm It does feel like 100 watts is punching way above its weight, but its perfect for acoustic sessions and very small pub gigs. Stick a decent mic in front of it and it sounds lovely. The EQ section is amazing on it though-very clear with a fair bit of thump. I use mine with my custom jazz and my sienna 78 P and the tones are beautiful from it. Have to say though, it seems to love the Jazz-or maybe its me that prefers the tone A fantastic amp and well worth the price I reckon anyway. Have you got a battery for it yet? Just tried one with mine the other evening at a mate's place and it worked a treat. car charger is well handy too!
14. That is a fantastic amp! Any chance you might consider a trade? I am in Ireland aswell
15. Fair enough, just thought I´d ask as we´re headed over there for a few days. No worries mate
16. Any chance you could get the Sub-Lime to Oxford at the end of the month (between 24th and 27th?)
17. Worked my arse off in two horrible bars at weekends and bought my first bass-Yamaha RBX170 in black. After 45 mins of playing, the cheap strap I got with it broke and the bass hit the bare concrete floor in the garage, taking a massve chip out of the body, right above the input jack-instant relic and mojo! . covered the bass in stickers-forever reminding me of my humble punk origins. Called it Robin, because one morning I went out there to get my bike and there was a wee robin perched on the headstock, staring at me. My tech called round a few weeks ago to drop off some bits he´d done for me and noticed it. He asked me how the hell I´d learned to play on it-only noticed after many years how high the action was-like a bloody double bass!-it has never been set up It still has the original strings on it Thinkng of sticking on my wall or something like that Drive 20watt amp. Speaker is still good, but cranking it beyond halfway gives a low distortion. Still have both About two months later I won a Laney Richter R4 Stack in a local music shop giveaway. (lasted me years but sold it off a few years back) A few weeks after that, my parents bought me a white mim Fender Jazz for my birthday(still have that too) Glad I kept my first set up though
18. That 78 P is gorgeous! If you ever decide to move it on, I´m looking for one of these to complete a 78 hat-trick
19. Gibson Thunderbird Studio V Amazing and well within that budget. The only 5er I own and definately the nicest of the ones I´ve tried. Fast, slim neck and seriously hot pickups! Not too much neck dive either. Also, it looks bloody cool! Never tried a Warwick 5er, but have heard good things about them.
20. Of the two options you have listed, would be more inclined to go with the DH. I had a blowtorch for a wee wee bt when they came out, and I just couldn´t get on with it. Tried so many basses and amp combinations and tried every possible combination of adjustments and settings and couldn´t get the sound I was after. It did come close in places, but just not the rel thing. Have you considered the Electro Harmonix range at all? as another person has said on here? I use only EHX stuff now (aside from a Fender PT tuner and Boss PSM 5 (effects loop/poweer supply unit) and they make some amazing pedals-nothing really gets near them in terms of warmth and clarity-unless its got valves in it. And if ts fuzz and distorton you´re after, try the Bass Big Muff-amazing lttle box. Also worth considering is the newer green Muff with Tone Wicker-great sound. Another idea might be to try and track down a Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket or V Twin-expensive and also a unique sound. The only other alternative I would consider might be the Fender Sub-Lime Bass Fuzz. Huge pedal, but bgger sound!
21. Hi guys. My name is Colin and I have to say, this s great thread so far, some really cool stuff! Ok, so the band I´m currently playing with is called CO2 (hate the name, as do all of us now ) We are a 4 (soon to be 5) piece Rock band. We don´t have a specifc genre-there are some acoustic-led tracks, some garage rock/punk, metal and even disco type songs too. The band consists of 2 girls-Vox & Acoustic gtr, Harmony vox & Lead gtr and 2 guys-me on bass and bk vox and a very talented drummer. We´ve been together just over a year now. We have done a few recording sessions here and there, released an E.P. and are currently in the early stages of recording our first full length album, hoping to have it done by early September of this year. We are about to add a second guitarist (a mate of mine from a punk band I was in in last year) to fill out live performances a bit more. Anyways, enough of the jibber-jabber Find us on Myspace and let me know what ye think : Co2
22. Do it man! You´d be stupid NOT to! Pty they arent Ampegs though I didn´t NEED a second Marshall vbc412, but damned if I let that stop me from getting one (at a very good price mind you) to create a VBA400 fullstack! Weighs a ton and I need help shifting it (cases just massaged the ego more ) but it sounds and looks amzing!!! Im sorted for Wembley should In ever get the call Seriously though, my amp GAS is nearly depleted permanently (just want an Ampeg SVT for my other rig). Now if I could only get rid of bass GAS
23. I am very sorry for your loss and my sympathies are with his family. I lost someone close recently to cancer. It is an awful feeling. This is truly a beautiful instrument. He must have considered you a really good friend. Hopefully, you will get many years of enjoyment from it. All the best mate, Colin
24.
I found pics of the bass. I have to say I like it and the price is very reasonable. I just wish it had eb-3 sort of circuitry with a pickup switch and vol and tone for each pickup. And some F holes wouldn't go a miss, nore would a trapeze bridge. What was the balance like?it looks head heavy
Hi, From what I remember (only got about 20 mins with t), It wasn´t very top heavy. though I had a fairly wide leather strap. The sound (played through a small Fender amp) was somewhere in Gibson EB/Dearmond Starfire territory. I´m sure the controls were vol/vol/tone. I´m also sure the bass I tried had a black pckguard, and not a shell one like the few I´ve seen around For the money, it really is a lovely bass. I agree about F-holes, though have noticed with their gutars, some do tend to feedback a tad more than other hollowbodies. I noticed this while running the sound desk at the local youth center band nights One kid who has one (bought from my tech) has taken to putting a wee bit of yellow foam in the F-hole and this seems to reduce feedback. Still, they are right up ther with my Flamekat in terms of tone-sweet one minute/face melting the next! The way rock n´roll should be!
