1. Nothing worse that be cajoled into doing a gig that you don't fancy ( for one reason or another ) and end up paying for the priviledge. If you don't want a fight over it..just use the 'child care' card and sorry, no can do..!!
2.
Specsavers also. Get some - my ears don't ring any more after rehearsals, whereas they always used to even with the 'off-the-shelf' ear plus. .
They do.... £99 for the moulds, IIRC... but they were unsure if you could add IEM at a later date whereas the Boots franchise say they can. I have to have my ears 'syringed' before they will make a mould....sounds ominous... how much gunk is there to shift..?
3. knew I shouldn't have used the NHS example....too emotive.. :lol; I guess the truth is..we know more tax needs to be taken..but none of us wants to be the ones to pay it... If we could have a firesale and a bonfire and get rid of a lot of waste..like the quango idea..as that just masks the responsibility from Gov ministries and ministers then I would be more open to a higher tax/share to get out of this mess...but we have heard all this before..in the form of build the QE2 bridge and then no toll after the bill has been paid off..and then they sell the **** thing which means we give it away..essentially after all the hard yards..!!
4. hate the idea myself..and then there is the liberties things as well. It is just another way to increase the tax pot.... as they don't spend anything like the road tax take on roads anyway. Why don't they just come out with a simple equation that we can understand..like we need to raise 'X' billions in tax for these fiscal years to cover this 'Y' expenditure. Trying to tax a motorist per mile on the basis of road spend and then putting it towards the NHS or elsewhere is plain dishonest sneaky politics.
5. Tell him to take the complaint to a higher authority
6. [sub]Not the person to ask as haven't done this for ages.[/sub] [sub]We use to get £200 at Dover St wine bar but that was the best part of 20 yrs ago, IIRC... but it was a very hard gig to get into...[/sub] [sub]Most of the others had cover charges so in theory you could make a lot..but you had to see a lot as well.[/sub] [sub]Should be a couple of guys along soon who are closer to the action and more upto date.. 7. If the B is tapered, then likely to be lo Riders. If not, then stand a chance of being hi beams. A G- 45 is about the most standard guage so that in itself will not help ID the string.
8.
..................... Also found it was quite an unforgiving amp in terms of really showing up any mistakes. Probably a good thing though!
in theory, yes... but you need to be clean from the start. It is the type of thing where people say they want it..but then sell the cab on and go back to 'vintage'
9. If you are going for a look...then you might want to measure any prospective cabs as the heads may not sit on top very well..... Nothing worse than the T look in that regard
10. Here you are, Martin...that TB link http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/ampeg-pf350-500-part-v-876524/ You might have to sort through it and its a long read. It seems that the limiter mechanism does its job but the trick is finding out where its limit is. I admit skirting thru the thread but it also seems that the 500w can be a struggle... and I can't understand that at all. altho suspect it is something to do with the class D type internal maps etc etc which will take its time to manifest as things that people either can live with or shy away from completely. It takes a very big ( loud ) gig to run out of level on my 400 and 550w amps and I don't hit the strings hard or max out the EQ ever... Of course, the amps might be flat out to all intents and purposes at around 1 or 2 o'clock on the volume dial but the EQ is pretty much notched flat as it can be. ( that doesn't mean the amp is flat-flat..just that its bias is..as much as it can be, IMO )
11. Well, Impedance on cabs is never specific... but then maybe it nevers needs to be as amps have enough about them to cope. If this is a pattern and has occured on more than a few units, I'd be thinking QC.. which is not a good sign. Of course, amps will work best with the cabs they are designed for...but this shouldn't be exclusive..it would a be a mammoth mistake if they were to try that one..!! I would imagine the cabs would behave themselves very well with another amp that you know... Btw I thought you were running 115 and 210..?? Pop down to the Windmill if you are about ..26th.
12. here you go..have alook through this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/198-recommended-amp-techs/
13. [sup]I know someone in Maidstone. Haven't spoken to him in a while but still have his number, PM me.[/sup] [sup]I have seen guys from Gravesend and Dartford posted IIRC.. [/sup]
14. There is visual expectation as well. Some rigs will get you laughed off the stage. I never minded turning up to an Ampeg..esp if the head was all valve.. less fussed otherwise. ditto Boogie, which I would have preferred tbh, but these were benchmark rigs for the stage and what you asked for on any rider. They translated well and everyone knew what they were and did... If you got your spec, you were pretty chuffed and suspected that the crew were well sorted. Some kit is more readily availalble in certain countries so it is easier all round to go with a certain reference, which for good or bad, Ampeg is. Had Ashdowns as well... and even the tired old units could do a job. ..and they were crewed in..what is not to like? Some crews would even have a trailor load of stuff where you could take your pick, but then you'd also likely have huge JBL bins for side fills and a stage mon man.. It was all about control. I just know what works for me on the stages I get to play... and if you spec overkill, then far better that than to find out belatedly the rig isn't upto it... and too late to do anything about it.
15. Most memorable and I still remember it after all these years, was in a village hall with a stage. Guy walks in...and we were pretty green ourselves, but the initial chat goes well.. We use the Hall's stage lights to get some atmosphere..as these things appealed to us at the time..and we start the number... The guy stands in the spotlight, arms outstretched, giving it Huge rock'n'roll, facing the imaginary adoring crowd and opens his mouth. Me and the drums are wetting ourselves as the guy can't sing a note.. not remotely close to one.... I am crying with laughter and can't keep the song together..so I bend down by my cab pretending I can't hear it so I can turn my back.. He never looks back which is just as well. he seems oblivious to us hardly keeping it together... in truth, we can't..!! The guy carries on with his rock god pose for the whole song... and we are dying.. tears and everything, my sides ache.. He turns round at the end to ask how was it for us...!! Bless him... still one of the funniest things ever in music for me...
16. [sub]Two issues here for me...[/sub] [sub]The status in the band...and the kids/wife.[/sub] [sub]If it is his band and his career then he can pay for it and you need to get the fees right. He can then call the shots on issue number two.[/sub] [sub]If it is a 'band'... then this needs talking about, PDQ.... and he shouldn't have just come to the baby sitting situation or what to do with his wife conclusion all on his own...[/sub]
17. Don't know M, but there might be a few people here who have more direct knowledge of this newish Ampeg amp. Have you looked it up on Talkbass...? I'll see if I can find the thread there later today. As regards the MB cabs..they aren't for me...but I guess he thought you should run it with more defined and focused 12's.. and had a few in mind... Will check out how 'tolerant' people say the amp is... can't understand that to the point of cutting out, tho..
18.
I prefer a combo over a big rig. Nothing to do with volume, but because I'd look like a tw@ taking it into a venue that only held 100-200 people & I want to do just the 1 trek from the car (which would carry a couple of 8x10s). I agree with you in the fact that it's about sounding good at lower volume. But there's a lot of smaller rigs that sound phenomenal at lower volumes & put paid to the antique fridge. Barefaced?
I'd break it even if it has to gobble up power because of the tune..
19.
This is the same forum where people like to spout off about guitarists who don't want to be parted from their Marshall half-stacks, right? Am I the only one here to sense a touch of irony? Here's the thing - most modern professional players just don't do this sort of thing. As several people have already pointed out modern equipment is smaller, massively lighter and every bit as loud (GB STL 900 + 2xVanderkley 112 MNT = approx 1000w). How anyone can justify more than that in strict musical terms escapes me.
hmmm..I'd like to see ..and hear..you try to get 1000watts of bass out of 2x112's without the cones flying across the room. I'll use a 550w into 4ohms of 2x112 and the sound just isn't all there on a decent 50x16 ft stage. Depending on the bias of the cabs, you'll hear it..but whether it is what you really desire in that situation is another thing. Volume and the attributes really required from my POV are a completely different thing..which is why I would get closer with 2x210 but even that then needs FOH and the sound to filter back from the P.A to help out for a powerful band and set.
20.
I'm going to get hung by people again for this, but I dont like kick drum mics on bass, especially (really really really especially) if there is a kick drum mic on the kick drum.
Don't know why anyone should do any hanging....makes perfect sense to me as the last thing you want to do is inhabit the same sonic space by design
21. strike with the thumb nail and lay the 1st finger of the plucking hand on the string to get any harmonic you like...depending on what note you fret...
22. strike with the nail and lay the 1st finger of the plucking hand on the string to get any harmonic you like...depending on what note you fret...
23. I doubt I could get any coin under mine at the 12th..maybe a 5p.. but I like low as I use a very light touch
24. I think you need a rig capable of coping with the stage. If you have proper side fills and monitors and the mixes, then you can scale the rig down to a degree but I take 550w onto stages that are around 50' x 16 and expect to have to use it quite powerfully. If I get a generous mix of bass in the monitors then that is a bonus but I prepare not to. I have often thought ..recently..about a larger rig for those few larger stages, but then I expect the P.A spec to be ramped up as well and I would still need to transport it. I think I could put togther a 1000 or near enough by slaving another set of cabs that I could transport so that is the practical way I would go.. If I had a 610 ..which I would love..then I would use it once or twice a year and it is a lot of money to tie up for that...and i still have to move//store it. But sure... you need to fill the stage and the band needs to hear it..and if you don't use the full beans, then that is what the volume is for... Far better that way than strangle the amp struggling to get any useable level.....
25. I try and get out and about as we have had enforced downtime for a few personal reasons within the band and I often hear Markbass rigs as culprits for the worse sound....funnility enough. It is mainly combos though admittedly where people expect either the 12 or 210 combo to cope with a full; band sound..and it just can't. I've used the 102 myself and it needs an etn cab...and even then, I knew it wasn't a solution as far as I was concerned. Other than that, I can't explain it either. I have to say..in gereral, if I see a combo on a gig, be it Peavey, Marshall or Laney and inc Marbass, I'm afraid, of late... and the gig is powerful, I expect it to struggle... as the bass player ends up pushing the EQ for all its worth just to get level..which the cab then struggles with...and the bass sounds awful, strained and just not supportive of the band sound. The markbass just sounds flabby and indistinct so I think it is the cab rather than the amp, IMO.. Best sound, I've heard recently..by a country mile...old Jazz with flats through a Eden W4/500 and XLT410..but no real surprise there.
