Thing is - if you get into/form a decent band that plays music people want to hear you will always get gigs. I think this has always been the case. If you are in it for the money this is even more appropriate. When i hear of bands that are finding trouble getting gigs its normally because they don't recognise what they are doing wrong - its easier to blame landlords, duos or the price of cheese than actually take a look at what they are doing. I'll leave you with this from Wiki... "A duo still performs under the name of Black Lace, but neither current band member was in the group when it was formed or when it enjoyed its biggest chart success" Now thats depressing.
There are many many bands from yesteryear who carry the name but no original members..and some make a pretty decent living out of buying those rights and performing the one hit. We had one on our bill recently and they were ok... or pretty good. they had a late afternoon slot but I would think they had the headline wages..even though they weren't booked as such. hmmm..have to up our fee... Most 50's or 60's bands would actuallly be dead or couldn't play now anyway

Fully agree that there are too many variables to be conclusive but my fave cabs of late have been ceramic..or rather one ceramic and my least fave cabs..by varying degrees just happen to ALL be NEO. And in that NEO group have been Markbass, GK, Ampeg, Berg, VanDv and my own NEO converstion in SWR. I do run a NEO rig and it has it uses and is by no means bad at all...but I am wondering whether to trade it out for AG SL's...which are NEO.. or DB's which aren't.
-
It wasn't possible to determine which Emimence use for Bag End..? and if it is cheaper to buy direct. But I fully understand going with manufacturers recommendations to get the best sounding cab.. it can be a minefield and at least the whole thing should be done and dusted
-
Berg do a NEO and Ceramic range, in the AE and HD/HS series. Aguilar do as well, as the SL is NEO and the GS annd DB are ceramic or traditional magnets. VanDv have to be NEO as they are so light, but it wasn't my rig so I couldn't pay too much attention to them apart from the sound. I find the NEO type chassis can do everything the traditional cab does -ish...they go loud, they go full, but ..IMO or gut feeling is that there is something missing. When you spend time on both and try to figure out what is what, my suspicion is that there is just something missing. This isn't conclusive because I haven't tried enough NEO rigs but since I get to reference them back and forth and I own and have giiged both types, I just get this impression...and it is growing the more I use them. If I was shopping now, my criteria after the sound, would be; size to fit the car. power handling, pref cab config and then weight. But I think I would alter the cab config before going NEO. so I would pick single or smaller cabs and double them rather than one cab. I fully understand the desire or necessity for lightwieght, but it isn't Major for me and it depends which compromise you put at the top of your list. I'm still looking for a 610.... to do a handful of gigs per year...

Under £2000 look at an Overwater J5... very nice work. Over £2k..Sei J5. Or save a bit of money and buy sh..if any crop up. Fender Jazz 5 maybe..?
-
I always look to see how far the sound is pushing the cones.... just seems to make sense to me... assuming you have a metal type grill and not cloth.... but then I always make sure I have way more cab than amp power. Bass is a killer for speakers... less so nowadays but I've had my fair share of inadequate cabs... so now I don't stress them at all..I think..!!
-
After the musical chemistry, the next thing I sort is do we agree we all want the same things... and if we don't then the liason goes no further. Must be a real bummer for you.....sounds like a fun gig..!!

I'v always said that Markbass are fine close up and at a low-sh volume but the amps don't stretch very well to my ears...but the biggest thing is the cabs do indeed lack focus off stage. This is why I am bemused when people talk about everyone they have heard with a very good sound turns out to using Markbass... guess we have diffent expectations on sound. They are bass monitors but not a good sound in the room, IMO..too flubby and lack spark and definition. I laughed when my mate said he brought Epi's to go with his MB top.... as Epi's can be reknown for their pillow sound... I still think their 210 combo takes some beating but you aren't going to run that in loud situations so its limitations aren't so apparent of.... and whilst we are at it..and being ultra picky... Ampeg and humbuckers..??? SO WRONG..!!! But just my 2p. It you want bass to bleed everywhere and have no defintion and clarity...or outright tone, ignore my above as you are looking for a completely alien bass sound to me ..it happens

I can quite well believe Fenders were ahead of the competition by a good few miles when they got established in the 60's... ever picked up some of the old Gibsons and Burn's planks.. ...?? but I've also tried a few pretty rank pre CBS basses with quite ridiculous price tags... Sold a 70's Jazz which was a dog... Fender were quite capable of putting together a decent bass that stands the test of time, but that is not to say you couldn't improve on it.. There is a whole industry of Fender clones that sprang up because of that... For me, I'd look into what Fender can produce now and I would expect a long search....but they aren't alone in having a few issues. I've been thro a rack of about 50 basses in a large shop..and struggled to be inspired by the playability of any.... and maybe that reflects on the shop... but is it reasonable for a shop to have to spend time setting them up better...?? er... no, for a £1400 plus bass I may be picky ....but I'll pay a premium to be very happy... but sometimes you may have to settle. I don't think that is good enough today...

sure, a 115 will work with a 410..but a 410 is a better cab is most cases so using 2x410 will be better than mixing. Typical 115 3-400w and Looooow.... average-ish 410 would be 600 into nothing special chassis' and a more focused sound, typically. Adding a second 410 will add masses to the sound. Sure, 115 plus 410 is tried and tested but the 115 gives you nothing the 410 will not and it is a pretty clumsy way to go.. I am surprised at the bland answers you got from your 2 sources...and would have thought both could have been more expansive, tbh..
I'd get another 8 ohm 210 but if you have to have the 115 it will be fine.
me too, that would be my choice..and maybe lighter/smaller....but the 15 will be ok... I've had some great sounds out of 210 plus 115 and if the cabs are matched, I am sure it will work really well...

Wouldn't worry about it....you're giging and deemed good enough by your bands
I run my eq pretty flat on the walkabout and only make small adjustment when required. Personally I would love to try the vanderkley and bergs as I have played through the barefaced compact and midget and they were okay (midget being my favourite by far) but I preferred the sound to my scout extension cab. I have never put the aggie's in the same league as the aforementioned cabs, should I? I'm very intrigued by gafbass02, what were the tonal differences between the three?
I've played through VanDv, Berg and I much prefer my Ag DB's. Different config of 2x210 against 2x112 and I didn't get much time on the VanDv, but I use Berg 112's as my second rig where space and carry are factors and for the most important gigs I go with the Aguilars. I like to carry light but not when it really matters. The Ag DB210 are ceramic and the Berg are NEO..as are the VanDv.
Clive from Groove Armada? I used to play in a band with him. What a great drummer.
Small word, Chris, me too. Amazing groove player and great all round.. hi-hat work was so funky he used to stop people in their tracks during sound-checks
I went markbass to barefaced, to bergantino. IMHO I found that the barefaced were my least favourite of the three in terms of sound and build quality, and seemed no louder at gigs. The bergantino were miles ahead of both in every respect, in particular sound. That said I can see me giving barefaced another try in the future because of the weight which is very liberating, and I've started to simply be less fussy about my tone too, as in all honesty I realised that no one else cares, so I may as well save weight!
See, I couldn't do this.... I had all sorts of sound problems last night...and I think I need to get my amp serviced as it survived a car crash.. but our gig went down a storm and I couldn't enjoy in because of my sound. Sure, it wasn't the cabs tho.... but I pretty pi$$ed today about it....
-
My DB's are indeed the DB's and I far prefer them to the Bergs. I just get a more consistant sound that is just more there. But I also think a huge part of the sound is the matchup with the amp.
-
Went down a storm but techically a problem gig on so many levels..oh well, a bit deflated.
-
Two very underated drummers, Bruce Carter and Clive Jenner, IMO Always love this as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px1C7h8Z_3c

We do 2x1 hr sets and that is it...so all our prices are based on those times, max.. Sure, we will stretch in a few mins ...but that is on the gig as and when...so we don't want anyone to start imposing new times after we have agreed the fee.. Hotel gig charging £70 a ticket..?? at 100 people, that is £7000 without the bar take..?? I think the band should easily be £1000 plus the table..and the good thing is you are not that bothered about getting it, so you might as well say what it will take to get you to sacrifice your NYE's... If the WAGS need to be involved...and no reason why they shouldn't be... have in mind what they will put back in drinks etc.. Or you could go in lowish with the fee but get rooms for the night... so make it £150 per man, plus table and rooms.
-
Easy to get by for sure, but not easy to play well... As for unsung hero...?? don't know about that and I don't go looking for that sort of stuff but I do like it when/if I get the biggest cheer/applause during the band introductions. That tickles me..
-
We use Wharfdale 15's at times as wedges and they are ok... wouldn't really want to use them FOH, tbh. If you want to double, then I think buy decent and buy them once Something like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RCF-ART-Series-322A-Active-Speaker-PAIR-/130767890891?pt=UK_ConElec_SpeakersPASystems_RL&hash=item1e725fa9cb The 10's are VERY pokey and will do small pubs and loudish units. They wil run out of steam with a full on-band but then you will really have to know your P.A by them anyway. For a cheaper option, try EV SX300's... again decent but not for LOUD bands.
-
I think the table is a good idea, but maybe 5 or 6 people at £70 needs that reflected in the fee..?? NYE is £1000 in a pub, IMO, but you have to be offered it. I would ask myself what bar staff work for then put a band person fee on top of that. Depends how long you have to work the hotel gig..?
