1.
Question: I'm still researching and taking in to account advice I have received. I have been looking at a few tonight and there is something I do not quite understand. There's an amp combo with a few different versions that are identical other than a difference in speakers. If they're all 250w then what is the difference between one having a 15" speaker and the other two having a 12" and then two 10" speakers? I assume that I don't quite understand what wattage means if I am confused by this. I've been reading wattage as a rating for how loud it will be. But if the wattage can be equal from a 15" speaker vs two 10", yet the latter costing more, then there's obviously something I am not quite getting. Educate me, please? (Edit: Also, what is a tweeter?)
If the combo has 3 different speaker configs then maybe you can try all 3 and see what you think...and how you like or dislike them. We can only talk in general terms about how a cab will behave and sound so assuming the combo baox size is the same..?? it make not be,... then the difference can be in the tune of the cab, or sound bias. Typically, 15's are fatter and slower sounding/responding to transients so would have a tradtional typical sound. 10's are typically tighter and punchier but may seem bass light, and 12's are between the two. This is not the whole story but it suits the industry to present as such, IMO. Many speaker/woofer units may not go much beyond 3khz... so a tweeter is a hi freq unit to allow hi frequencies which may go beyond 12khz or so in its specs. The balance between crossover and capability of the hi freq horn/tweeter is another grey area, but you should expect the sound to gain some presense if the cab has one. So, it is easier, if not entirely fair, to think of 15's 12's and 10's in the terms of above but they all work so it is best to try a few to get your reference.
2. If the kick is in a place you know well, you can do this and get away with it. You just need to sort out the monitoring. Can you submix out of the desk into a basic headphone monitor..and take feeds from all the other kit in the P.A...?
3. Different cab and front ported ...would try it stuck behind you. It may not have worked for the rear ported cab but may work this time?
4.
I'm a recent Schroeder convert, currently playing through a 1212L and 15L and it's incredible how the B&C neo speakers cut through the rest of the noisy buggers in the band! I think the lack of attention they get now is because they don't have a UK dealer any more and so aren't as easy to get as before. When buying the last cab, I asked Jorg Schroeder about this and he explained that he had to drop the previous distributor because there were issues about them passing off used cabs as new. It's definitely worth getting in touch with him if you're looking for an extremely lightweight and reasonably priced cab, and he's happy to keep the import costs down as much as possible (he adds with a subtle wink ). There are plenty of custom options available to ensure you've a real one-off cab
These cabs have quite a low key following amongst very discerning players who would generally sound great thru a lot of cabs, but they use these cabs on small gigs as they punch way more than their weight
5. I've never seen or heard a good one... You can put the 'seen' part down to the build and design, and that is not something that you can blame the player for. The sound..?? well, the guy who uses one doesn't have a sound I'd go for whatever I have heard him use, so that is more a variable. But the biggest issue is, IMO... why is this always such a contentious point amongst so many. I am not a fan but I am by no means alone. It doesn't seem to be a subject that people can leave alone, on either side of the equation. What is it that crystalises opinion so..?? Maybe they have upset so many people..?? who knows..? Maybe by promising so much and delivering..??? or setting oneself up as a guru..?? Who knows..? And, who cares, I'll worry about that myself when they become any sort of contender for my business. Others have decided they are exactly that for them...?
6. LInes like this are easier in the sense they can be more fluid and therefore you don't need to be so exact. You still need to get the flow, but the notes are less important to the overall groove, IMO. Other specific riffs can be harder as they are also probably THE song so there is no leeway. I always find mid temp very regular lines tougher as you have to rip it exactly... It is easier for me to do it faster...if that makes sense.
7. Is that model devised in the 1950's still viable..given that the company is nothing like that company all those years ago.. And if that model was working today, we probably wouldn't be talking about Fender being in 'trouble'
8. Not read back thru the thread but I'd say all wood makes a difference....but unless you can swap out that wood and compare, which most of us can't do, then you'll not know how. Luthiers will know if they use various combinations, IMO. I had a bass made and I picked known combinations but no one could predict exactly what it would sound like until clued together. They then added a pre amp which, in some part, can compensate. As it happens, both my basses are made by the same company..and they only had two luthiers, but there are definite tone characteristics between the fret boards, so I am prety sure body wood matters as well. But... most buyers only get a say in whether they like the finished article as presented.. That is the way it is............ I like the look of maple but the sound of RW...so my next bass made will have a RW neck spec.
9. It does depend what else you need.... but you should be able to get good space, and support from the top names. The only thing I'd suggest is to use a U.K based host...just in case you ever need to talk to them. A quick google of the top 10 U.K hosts should get you a few good deals for that money. Also, if using Wordpress, choose one with a local instal... so you don't need to bother about FTP'ing an instal/build onto the host. For that reason, maybe not 1&1 if the don't have a local WP install...( They didn't last time I looked )
10.
Making basses in China with the Fender Logo was to me the biggest mistake ever in devaluing the brand. The Mex instruments are much worse than the Squire special series basses in quality, the whole range is just a complete mess. USA basses with neck pockets you can put plectrums in !. The Fender Logo should in my opinion only be used on the very best USA instruments and use Squire for everything else. The brand has lost its Kudos, it's no longer a premium instrument brand, you can buy Fender branded Chinese basses ? WTF, sorry, but I really do hope they sell up and someone takes over and puts the Fender brand back where it belongs. Chasing the sub prime instrument market has not done them any favours.
I would agree................but Fender are way too far down the line in buy-outs and take-overs and rebrands. I always think it is a devaluation of a brand to ship to the far east for manufacture but it is a cost exercise that no accountant will ignore, given the chance. The problem with Fender, is as you say... what the hell does Fender stand for...? IMO, only the American Deluxe upwards is worth looking at... otherwise you are sitting with a lot of product that you really don't want to. They really need to get back to making something that Fender actually stands for... and rebrand/rename the rest.. This is why the upmarket Fender bass clone does so well... IMO
11. Wasn't all paperwork tho was it? ...this was in person. I am surprised they didn't allow contact to the person she was supposed to be staying with...etc etc as happened in a case of my friend's wife's brother.. or maybe they did. We don't know. I think the onus should be on the person to provide proof but then again we in the U.K don't even have ID on us abroad. We might carry CC's ..if that is acceptable, but we don't carry our passports. I am sure this sort of thing happens at our ports and airports a lot more than we think. Such is the U.K a desirable asylum destination..or simply for illegalblack market working.
12. Depends how 'wrong' your right choice is. But also, nothing is forever..?? I bought very well, IMO so I don't envisage changing ........ yet..!!
13.
I'm not. Level 42 > Mark King > BC's Most Hated > Lack of sympathy. If she'd come here to see Rush these pages would be simultaneously awash with lachrymose bleating and ablaze with righteous rage; this combination resulting in a sort of damp, smokiness, rather as an autumn bonfire pervades the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. ..........
Wouldn't make any difference to me, but I wonder if there is an element of truth in your jest. I hate them both... well, I don't actually HATE L42....
14.
The dog, mate!
Maybe...it was the emoticon tho..??
15. ha ha ... I guess it was a bit a wild punt, as too obvious. Oh well. Percy Jones
16. ha ha... he was the big clue as was so left field of his main work..?? but you had to know that..difficult to look it up, I thought... I'm going to guess Dave Pegg
17. hope you aren't laughing at my album collection
Has to be Jaco!
It does...but how did you get there...?
18. hope you aren't laughing at my album collection
19. Cherry-picked his CV Lenny White Herbie Hancock Michael Brecker Mike Stern Ian Hunter There is your big clue in there, somewhere ... I am sorry I haven't detailed the work the player did with the artist, but thought that might make it too easy to google..???
20. wow.... Pretty inspired guess...but then he does have that all round type of CV... Will have to have a think... be back soon after I've dug out a few albums..
21. Straight £10 in my local hairdressers/nail and waxing parlour
22.
I agree that the last slot is frequently not not the best attended, but in this case it was a charity event, not a musical showcase for bands. Notwithstanding all the arguments about whether to do such an event, if it is decided that you will then fighting over 'the best' slot starts to seem a bit Prima Donna-ish. Chances are that few people go along to small charity events to see a specific band anyway, and the fact that most of them drift off home before the 'headline' slot is all the proof you need that the specific bands are usually incidental to the overall proceedings.
Apparently they did...as they all went home after the biggest draw..?? I think a drawing band is pretty important if you want to get a decent attendence and iirc, 200-300 is decent. You have to commend the effort involved but I see no problem that the band doing the most 'work/involvement gets the favour back. Not wishing to derail further, but I think choosing the slot quite a reasonable request considering all the other bands seemed to do is turn up and go home when they felt like it leaving the OP's band to set up, provide kit and break-down it all. Anyway...doesn't much matter what I think or would do, until they ask me.
23. Abe Laboriel... oops, Jumped the gun as thought it was studio version of Mr 335. Am back to stabbing in the dark..as opposed to Goggle. I'll guess Neil Stubenhaus.
24. On the subject of migration... over half the world's population would migrate if it could and IF you accept that the U.S plus Europe were the desired destinations for the chance of a better life. The current world map can't afford that so on the one hand you have a mass desire to move and you HAVE to have a mass resistance for that change as well. 70 million in the UK is a very large total in regard to a lifestyle as we know it so sooner or later someone is going to have to stand up and say it can't go on. No one is willing to give up their slice of the cake ...or rather re-distrubute that cake. The last economic crisis has shown that all too well. Nothing to do with the OP though....??
25.
OR... you could take the view that the event is not about you but trying to raise a few quid for charity!
Indeed it is...but they wanted a favour and a bit of a one sided one at that as far as I could see..and more to the point, so did the OP, it appears. As i said... the band needs to review the outcome and decide if they can learn next time. I know how I would have approached the request... so as long as the OP's band agrees next time all is ok. But, one of them was obviously not convinced otherwise we wouldn't have had this thread.
