1. Covers look nice and substantial and therefore should do the job of protecting the cab. I find a decent padded cover makes quite a difference over a year or two as try as you might you just can't avoid bashing one at some point or two..
2.
The problem with this song is that there is no song. It's 10% song and 90% performance and the power of Lorraine Ellison's performance puts this song out of reach.
The band has got to be upto it as well..... I think you'll have to be quite brutal with it in regards to whether it works and not get carried away as a song that you'd really like to do. It is very definitely a vocal feature but the band has to be able to carry it off with power and dynamics, which is why it tends to be produced..and those songs are hard to do slimmed down..
3. I was also going to add, I can see why they can charge what they charge and why people will pay it. You need to plugged into corporate who can and will pay that, and you'll earn it as those people also expect their lb of flesh at times... but they know what they will work for and so don't quibble when buying When we go to London... we are looking to add £1k to a price and we will do it for less than that mark-up but we also know we need to be able to cover the rise in price. And if you can't, you get found out VERY quickly, IMO.
4.
Yes but you are comparing good 4x10s (pairs of 2x10s) to my good 2x12, something that is ok but at the cheaper end of the 2x10 market wont match a top end 2x12.
Agree.... iffy cabs are iffy cabs. All my cabs are good, IMO, which is why I bought them..suffice to say I'll clarify..top end 2x210 or a 410 will put paid to a top end 212... I accept that other reasons might come into play about why a 212 is a very good compromise -and why you would use one - but if you didn't have to make one...410's all the way, for me. Providing it is a very good one. If you brought a very good 212, you'd be wanting to buy the equal in 210/410's..??
5. The band is great, IMO... and does exactly what they need to do. They may be a bit chummy about it but people aren't going to watch and listen to them..it is full-on dance floor stuff and people will go away having danced their arses off..and will have had a great night. I am sure they are very capable and could do a different take if they wanted to ..and you might change a few members for that... but they know what they are booked to do, and so do the people who will want to book them.
6. Reading the resignation post, I have no doubt you did the right thing. I don't even understand what the keys was trying to do or say... and if he wants to play bass.... then they've found their bass player and at least you are well out of it.. Good key players should be able to find plenty to do without peeing all over the bass parts....and if they can't then they will have to take direction from the band... If this situation had cropped up in rehearsal I'd have said what on earth did he think he was he doing... and probably sounded your death warrant within that band... but you got there anyway..?? I suspect that e-mail was possibly a prelude to that scenario anyway..??
7.
SRV??
Really like him, but not so sure he would be placed in that very select few who inspired so so many. I mean VH started a whole gtr playing style all on his own.... and Hendrix just blew everyone away. Beck is Beck and still unique after all these years... so not quite sure I would put SRV in that league myself... Others might but I don't think he stands side by side with the most influential Gtrs of the last 50 in a top 5 or so..???
8. I'll give you that... Jeff Beck is a gtr that just cannot be ignored by anyone learning/studying the gtr... IMO, and one of the very few. Had a chat with a gtr about this very thing today and we gave up when we wanted concesus on ground breaking gtr players. We had Hendrix, Beck and Van Halen and that was as far as we got....
9.
My 2x12 can see off many 4x10s especially older designs, a good 2x12 or pair of 12s should be a match for most 4x10s ime.
I'd probably be sceptical about claims like that in general but depends what you are matching up with. For me..the benchmark 410's were SWR Goliaths and Eden XLT's..plus a few others from EBS and Epifani.. and not forgetting Aguilar and certainly Berg.. I think 2 DB210's certainly do very well against my DB212 but the 10's have more all round cut but the 212 has bigger bottom... My thinking is that I don't really have to have the 212 do that for me, but it is nice anyway. I like the modular thing about 112s and the carry is great to have. If left to me and I had the gig for it, I'd have an 810... but I don't do enough for the 610 I was going to get anyway, so happy to run anything from 112, to combinations of 212 and 210's.. Having a great time with DB212 and 210 myself and that is a big gig rig, but I do chuckle when I see a tiny 112 turn up. I almost break my rule and offer the guy the loan of my rig..out of sympathy
10.
They can say whatever they like. Everybody can have an opinion. George was 17 years old and had to create his own path for the most part. In 1962 there wasn't much for him to draw from. Mayer had 50 years of rock guitarist to draw from. George Harrison is a rock and roll icon. Are you saying Mayer is in the same league as a George Harrison? The Beatles were once in a life time song writers and here's something, how many rock bands do you hear playing their instruments and singing 2 and 3 part harmony? Blue
Didn't stop Hendrix, or indeed Clapton who had quite a lot ot say at the time, musically, even though he has never been a fave of mine.. Who did Page or Beck draw from..and where did Van Halen get his thing from in 76...( 6 years after the death of Hendrix ) where did that lightning bolt come from in gtr terms..? I mentioned Mayer as a bit of a gtr player these days but could have surely picked many others... Bonamassa..?? George, bless him, was fortunate he made his name as one of the Beatles as his gtr work would not have got him there...IMO, of course. As for Taylor Swift..she is a marketing marvel... as she has sales that rival Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, which means HUGE MAJOR LEAGUE country star. I haven't heard a good song out of her, to be honest, and I tried to find one.. but that doesn't mean that she doesn't hit the spot ..for whatever reason, for a huge amount of people. But then again, back in the 60's they spammed a few things as well.... The Monkees for example.
11. Oh No... !!! bugger..!!
12. Solid time is where it all starts for any player. I don't think it is acceptable to not play in time... Not being able to play to click is one thing and it is a live show anyway, but to drop off or pick up to any degree is a big No.. This may be down to the drums just not being fit enough but that is part of it as well and there are certain things you just can't bend for... and weak drums, poor sound and poor time are killers for me..and I expect for the rest of the guys in the band as well, otherwise I'd seriously question their judgement. So, solid time, solid sound and just plain all round solid is it, for me..
13.
Ha, a third of Chic's set was covers, they played a load of songs Nile produced but were not Chic by any means. By that token they are probably the single highest profile covers band on any circuit last year. They are therefore relevant to a thread entitled 'Using a music stand in a covers band'.
It is idiotic conclusions like that that lead even Rogers himself to tell the audiences that they aren't a covers band..and that he wrote or produced all the material they play and that the line-up is a vehicle to do that. I am sure he'd appreciate your take since he goes to such pains to spell out they are his songs in a written or production sense.
14. I'd pick harmony as you either have good groove or you haven't... Not really something you can get ... sure you can focus a bit better but study..?? Soloing over changes is something a lot of bass players never get and that would add a string ..but groove is what you feel so I am not sure you can learn it as such. Having said that...groove playing gets you more gigs, IMO, but jazz harmony wont hurt you to have. I'd be interested how you can learn groove off the bat..??? or in a classroom and who would be teaching it...
15.
Maybe concern was not the best choice of words. I'll say I'm irritated when anyone young or older criticizes anything when they're ignorant to facts. The best example would be the 20 something guitarist that criticizes George Harrison's guitar work. Now, if they know the history behind George , where he came from his influences and what was available to him to draw from, then fine. However if they no nothing about him or his legacy and they're spouting off, I'm irritated. Blue
Why can't they just say they didn't think he was that good... compared to say Clapton or a modern day guy like...er.. John Mayer, for example...if that is indeed what they thought? FWIW, I don't think the most important contribution the Beatles made was their musical ability..but they sure wrote some great songs..and more than most...but there you go..!!
16. One thing I don't do..especially here..is pull apart someones for sale thread, but it is also good to frequent places where most others don't do that either..or see the need to.
17. I have to say that the better draws around here...i,e bands that can justify a ticket price, are invaribly Ska bands as the number of old mods dust off their Harringtons etc, go speeding and constantly turn out in impressive numbers. I'd hate to do the gig but I admire the crowds they can get.
18. Can't say I've ever seen it ...so thanks for that...probably wont be able to get rid of it now
19.
The only reason mentioned Chic was in response 51m0n post. Unless you are there just to provide the music presentation is important, I don’t mean jumping around and throwing every rock cliché going and it needs to be appropriate and it can be subtle. Playing for the audience is important whether I a pub or stadium.
Yep.. didn't particuarly mean to single out your post, that post was irrelevant as well...or someone didn't read the thread title.. which isn't usually a problem unless it purports to support an argument..rather than just a comment, which it appeared to me to do..
20. Our drummer will turn sick with the DB power if too close. Not saying that is a good thing as I do think some places just aren't suitable for it but he has never ever complained when I use the lightweight rig.
21. My preferred big rig is a DB750 into DB212 and 210. The impedence of this mini stack is around 6 ohms-ish.. so the amp could probably do around 850w or so. I doubt I get near half that volume ..all things considered, as my basses aren't hot and my playing style is light but the rig is worth it...for the good gigs.. as it puts out such an authoritive sound and blows away my B rigs which are class D and Neo, btw. I think class D and Neo can be a more than a decent sound but the prime concern for that sort of rig is weight and easy carry. This is the selling point and the compromises that I feel they make to get there are some way down on a lot of players lists.. Just not mine, when it matters to me... Class D and Neo is not about volume as you'll feel it get to those peaks, it is more about 'authority of sound' IMO.
22.
I think it's a bit unfair to compare us with Chic. They are an extremely successful, multi platinum selling band and we're not! There's a reason for this, not least of which is the fact that we are playing other people's songs. I would love to put on a show and go the full hog , and don't get me wrong, when we were younger, we really went for it. Thing is, these days , if I was to jump around onstage and shout " are you ready to rock people?" I would be regarded in these parts as a tosser. I know a lot of the people who come to see us, plus We are all starting to get a bit older. We have to put on a slightly more dignified show. It's not like we stand like statues all night, plus our "stage" is just usually on the floor at the end of the bar with very little room for rock poses. We do make a little effort. I've seen many bands on huge stages who don't run around all over the place and yet who have captivated me. I've seen bands who do nothing but run around, and that's great too. As for exceptional or unique, we regard ourselves as pretty good. We play rock covers mixed with traditional music rocked up a bit, so it is a bit unique for this town, although not completely unheard of in this area. I like to think that by playing good music and at least looking like I'm enjoying myself, is enough round here to make people think, I like these.
We are older as well... and I think we look dull on stage...but we don't sound it, by any means. I've been told we are also really interesting to watch...which I like, but don't quite get, but we will have people dancing, singing easily enough and we can get a bigger cheer at the start of the set than many locals end with... So, some good, some bad... I'll live with it as we don't need to do much else..or rather, I am banging my head against the wall...and I can see why the guys don't think it is worth it for £50... I thnk there is a lot more mileage for the better gigs but I also think we've setlled and 'peaked'... If we chance a song we don't know well enough and we don't rehearse enough of late... then discreet notes are used... At the end of it all, do we put on very good show... well, we are capable of that but people judge us as much as they judge anyone else... if fact, I think they judge us more as we are considered the 'upstarts'...
23.
True, but pubs are struggling audiences are dwindling and they pay the bands peanuts. Chic are a good example to what I am trying to say because It doesn't matter that some members of Chic use stands/IPods because they have enough charismatic performers up front, they create great a atmosphere, in other words they put on a good show. The problem is when there are 3 or four people on a small stage whose only idea of performance and presentation is to put some tinsel round their music stand at Christmas. Play for the audience not in spite of them, I think the days are gone when it is enough to say look at me I am playing an instrument, most people find that boring unless you are exceptional or unique.
Well, we are talking about cover bands ( in the thread title ) and it is stretching it to say Chic are the ultimate cover band... but their live shows I've you-tubed didn't have music stands so even they recognise a time and a place. It is all gig appropriate. You either know that or you don't or you'll be told. If it doesn't matter then the gig doesn't really matter. Personally, pubs..?? no...functions, yes... but it does depend how rehearsed up you are. Some bands busk on the night and you'd never know... but the audience could guess if they saw the stands. I can't really take the weekend warrior bands very seriously with stands in the local rock pub playing a bunch of pub standards as you either know what you are doing or you don't.. But then it is not always so absolute... Steely Dan tunes with stands..?? ok..if the band are GOOD Thin LIzzy or AC/DC etc etc .... err.....?????
24. I have no empathy with either ( for different reasons ) but suggest it is a style you have to like in order to play it...more so, that other styles, IMO. Reggae isn't easy but ska is just music white guys who can't dance usually CAN dance to Other than that..can't help but say you really have to listen to them..
25. Yes, but I know someone who would probably sell a pair of Bergs
