1. I'm with Stinson on the price. I own an immaculate 1978 Mocha Brown Fender P-bass that is a good weight. Musuem pieces are going for around £1500 & irrespective of what you think of EMG pickups without the originals you aren't selling an all original bass. If you can find the original pickups, remove the EMG ones and I reckon you could be looking at £1200 - but I'd find a positive spin on mentioning the weight! If it helps, mine came with original receipt, original strings (not on the bass), original case, ashtray covers etc So yours won't go top wack as it's been a real players bass by the sound of things. £800-£1100 as it is and with original pup £1200. I reckon Best of luck
2. I bought my first (& last - at that price!) Rickenbacker back in January. Truely awesome. Traditionally a P-bass player, I found it surprisingly light and very playable. It's a 4003 in mapleglo & here's the obligatory rubbish phone photo
3. Sounds good, I like a lot of roots music & it's not uncommon for musicians to take on a few projects so I'm sure the fiddle player is just seeing what's out there
4. Greetings from another Fender / Ampeg fan
5. Greetings from just up the road in Thatcham.

Hello

Greetings from a fellow 4003 / p-bass player who has also been playing since the late 80s
7. I was referring more to the idea of watching bands on TV, not knowing who they were and thinking male musicians were female - kind of smacks of watching Top of the Pops with my late Grandparents in the late 70s / early 80s. Let the record show that I do actually feel reasonably young still. I'm just a bit out of touch & that's no bad thing
8.
....a hippy girl called Greg Churchouse
Beat me to it! I just got that from Google. I feel officially old!
9. On top of being accused of talking to myself I have now found out that the hippy girl is a fella! I'm not doing so well here!!! At least I found a poor pic of him with the said bass. I'll get my coat...
10.
Talking to yourself is a bad sign
It's Friday night, I guess everyone is out gigging. We've had other Friday night TV threads that have really gone mad.
11. I've been really wanting a Fender Jazz recently - just as I thought my GAS was cured. I'll probably always be a P-bass player but I do like upright basses too. It's the beauty of bass - you can have more than one.
12. Scouting for Girls, apparently
13.
I'm the one playing bass (oddly enough)
Looks like the sort of band I wind up playing with. Is that a bouzouki on the right?
14. I guess it's the house band but I missed the start. A hippy girl with a cool as mustard surf green rosewood 'board Jazz bass. Anyone what model it is or is it a custom jobbie?
15. Stuff comes around soon enough. I always find whenever I'm interested in a certain bass it seems to suddenly go from 3 being available of that model to nobody listing one for months. Patience is the key.
16. Me too, but no. I helped get £80 off my singer's cheapie Epiphone about 18 months ago but they would not budge on my last 2 purchases - the far more expensive USA P-bass (reason - it was heavily discounted already) & a MIJ Jag bass (credit crunch was the reason - even when I mentioned a mere £30 difference in a shop I'd been to that morning)
17. It's your bass - do what you want. That said, natural wear & tear is definitely cooler
18. I've had stuff price matched in the Reading store but they have tightened up since the credit crunch & they wouldn't do it last time
19. Great advice from Wil - I often use a metronome or play along with demos to improve timing
20. Welcome - I've making my first trip to Vegas on Sunday. Can't wait!
21.
How much does a decent bass cost? It depends on your idea of decent. The Squier Classic Vibes are good instruments and are really well priced-but some people won't look at them because they say Squier on the headstock. Some people think £2k for a Rickenbacker is decent, others think they are horrible. Don't go looking at instruments by price. Try them all.... you may be surprised at the one's you like the most.
I whole heartedly agree. I own a Rickenbacker & it is lovely. It felt like I was buying into a lifestyle when I bought it. However with a good set up etc a £300 bass can play brilliantly
22. I always thought it was flatwounds. If you want a big thumpy sound try Rotosound Trubass - i.e. what McCartney used on the rooftop gig. Not period correct but they sound just great
23. I've filmed most of my gigs for the last 5yrs. I can reveal exclusively that for a bunch of oldies my current band is a big bunch of posers! Me included!
24. Warning L.S.D. alert - not the drug, Lead Singer Diesease. It affects far too many bands. Trust me, you can do better - ditch him
25. Try as many as you can and go with what feels right for you. If you can't play too much at the moment just try holding it and seeing how it feels. Owning a musical instrument is a very personal thing and you should just enjoy the hunt for that all important first one. Welcome to Bass.... Welcome to Basschat
