1. Just wanted to start a thread to say Antonio bought my Ampeg combo. We had a quick and smooth transaction and I'd happily trade with him again. Well within the spirit of all Basschat trades / sales I've done. Cheers
2. I've got one but was just posting to say that if you want to work out what era it is, here is a guide DATING TABLES For mid to late '70s silverface amps and early '80s "blackface" models, the serial numbers are date encoded much the same way as Fender guitars from the late '70s: A6 + 5-digits - 1976 A7 + 5-digits - 1977 A8 + 5-digits - 1978 A9 + 5-digits - 1979 B + 5-digits - 1975, 1976 F0 + 5-digits - 1980 F1 + 5-digits - 1981 F2 + 5-digits - 1982 F3 + 5-digits - 1983 F4 + 5-digits - 1984 F9 + 5-digits - 1979, 1980 Hope it's useful
3.
From what you have said above, I still think you don't understand what the government is proposing.
Siddx, you may well be right. Read your posts back, you do sound a bit strong though. Best of intentions from me but maybe I don't get it fully. As I said at the start, this is why I avoid politics. I certainly don't wish to fall out with anyone over this
4. I like them and certainly think they are well worth the money. The beauty of a P-bass is that it a good set up usually means you have a great instrument. The MIM standards are fine. If you want to modify it the pups or the bridge are the only real adjustments you could consider
5.
EDIT: Sorry Burrito, I was a bit full on there, I know you posted with sincere intentions. It's just that some of these petitions are worded in such a way that people misinterpret them and don't research the subject properly. Sorry mate, no offence intended.
No worries, as I said 1) I am sure this will be policed with common sense if it does get through & 2) Not trying to scaremonger. Just wanted to make people aware. For the record I've worked alongside Trading Standards before so I doubt they will be chomping at the bit to criminalise every two bit band that plays a backstreet pub.
6. I can only agree. I used to sit around the £500 figure with gear & it was only last year that I went as high as £1700. I think it depends on your useage though. I'm semi-pro & play a lot. If I was full time perhaps I'd justify a more expensive bass. I'd worry about it being knocked or stolen more though
7.
Always keep the original bits, take it back to stock then sell the upgrades and the bass separately.
Well said that man!
8. I know we should always proceed with caution when mentioning politics on a forum but this has cropped up on a few sites & I feel this may be of interest to a lot of Basschatters. I would urge you to take a look at this petition though IF YOU PLAY ANY INSTRUMENT LIVE in pubs / clubs. Basically anyone in a band playing in licensed premises is helpng the owner to break the law unless that owner has a licence. Potentially this could criminalise artists who are simply just playing. I play a wide catchment area in largely well established venues but even so. Anyhow here is the link http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/livemusicevents/ I would hope the law would be Policed by Trading Standards with a degree of common sense. However the amendment to the act looks like a bit of a hatchet job from what I can see and potentially could harm live music. Take a look. Not trying to scaremonger but potentially this could really affect a few of us.
9. There is a thread running at the moment on upgrades. I don't doubt this'll play like a £700 bass but he'd do well on £450. A lesson he'll learn the hard way I suspect
10. I'm not sure I'd entirely agree with buying a Squire Jazz for around £250 and stick on £600 of upgrades as a reality but I do like the idea of spending a couple of hundred on a £500 bass. I think when you are spending more on the upgrades than the initial value of the bass you should maybe be looking at if this is the best way to spend money. I completely agree on making it personal and also agree you have to consider resale value. After all if you have to make that many alterations surely you should be questioning why you bought that model in the first place. Different if it's a project bass from scratch. About 5 or 6 years ago I moved onto guitar and when I was AWOL from bass I got seriously into modifying teles. New pups, new bridges. I made them sound great but it made no real difference on re-sale value. Returning to bass, all my basses are stock now by comparison with the exception of 2 - one had parts wear out and the other was the result of a dirt cheap EBay bargain of a pickup that I'd have been a fool to pass up on.
If you must have it saying "Fender" on the end, remember that for US basses you pay a premium for the fact that it was made in the States - not for quality. Buy a Japanese Fender & save £300. Jon.
I'm not really too bothered what it says on the headstock but this was my view for years.... and still is to an extent.

12.
Daneletro Longhorn - they don't sound great (IMO) but they're incredibly light, super-fast, and good fun. I think they look really cool too. If you win the lottery, I can't recommend an Alembic SC sufficiently highly (and there's a lovely one for sale on BC!)
I agree except I like the tone you get. Different tastes I guess?

14. The band in York. I don't come in for half the tune but it's a neat little country rocker that rattles along nicely
15. It's a small bass and mine fits standard Fender cases. Don't know for certain on shaped Jazz cases but my money would be on yes
16. Surely that wasn't CC DeVille halfway through? We got offered SXSW 2010 this year so could have gone to the screening - only it worked out it would have cost us $5000 to play and I'd describe it as "unlikely" in terms of us recouping that in tshirt sales
17. I had the same bass 10yrs ago but with pearl block inlays - always wanted the black ones! Enjoy it, they are awesome basses & good to hear some feedback about FarEast guitars
18. Steve - Go west to Bath and I played in SkinTrade. Bratpack I know well because Andy Town & I shared a flat together after SkinTrade / Dogsbody ended and we did a band together called The Ex-Boyfriends. I think we played with Endorfiends the night after Diana died in London but I was ill so don't recall it to much. Needless to say I know all those bands you mention and I suspect I know a lot of the same people. Left it all behind a long time ago and the the last 10yrs has been more of an Americana thing for me but I look back fondly. Tim
19. Hey Steve - Welcome to Basschat. What was the band you did in the early 90s? I was part of that underground Glam / Sleaze scene too
