1. I havn't posted here for a while, so maybe there is already a thread on this topic but this online site is almost going into year two. I joined Funk U at the beginning and I know that there are some people from all around the world that are also members. As a worth-while internet learning experience for bass players of all levels , it is amazing to me how good it has been from the beginning. This helped me back to music after a layoff of over 25 years. As you all know there are many internet sites to learn bass guitar as well as electric guitar. The difference here has been the direct input , interest and feedback from the fellow students as well as the Professors......................This is not an advertisment for FUNK U, they don't need me to tout them, but many people attempt to teach themselves music and don't have much sucess. With the bass, all you need to do to make some noise is to buy a bass and an amp and plug in. Soon without the proper teacher or instruction you are selling your bass and amp or its in the basment closet not being used.......................I myself went to formal music school for the string bass and have a degree that I blow my nose with.........................In anycase Funk U.(Google will get you there) is worth looking into and the cost (low) will please you ........If you are already a member then you know what I am talking about....Funk On People..................
2. that is a great suggested song list for anybody to go over.
3. I bought a Fender Amer. P bass five string. It is a beast and really rings out. It's not for everybody but since this is my first five string I have to get used to it but no problem as to the sound it gives. Fender basses are like power tools ( drills, saws etc. ) and designed to get the job done. When you play in a band and need to establish the bass and be heard, Fender does the job. I am no soloist or fancy player, I learned on the String Bass and even if I no longer play one , the Fender does the job of the string bass and more !!!!!
4. I suppose the others are correct as to where to post your thread but i went on to craigs list and found this ad for a similar amps head. I have the new Ampeg SVT heads as well as (2) 810E cabs and at this time I am waiting for a Heritage SVT CL to arrive. The old amps are very interesting to me but not my cup of tea. I ordered new stuff and sent them back , thank god I could. In US when you spend $2200 FOR A NEW SVt2pro it doesn't play right out of the box and also a VR that was also new and the fan was too loud (like a power tool) I know to be careful. Here is the CL link.......http://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/1687306582.html
5. I currently have the same rig set up in my other room. It (the head is a little loud) but the overall is great in that it is solid and not all that hard to rip down and transport.
6. Crazy lists......mine is modest: Fender Amer. made P bass 5 string Road Worn (Mexico) Fender P Fender 4 string P bass with active pups Jazz ( korean) Active pups Squire J bass (cheapo) Steinberger Spirit...............................................my favs are the 5 string and the roadworn..........................
7. Ashdown & Marshall seems to be just as popular as Ampeg is here is the states. Orange amps I have seen at local guitar shoppe where I take guitar lessons. Bass is bass and maybe just a 215 cab would do the trick . Just telling you to buy this or that might not do it. Orange bass amps are in the same class as some of the Ampeg tube amps, right? I not saying get an 810E monster cab but maybe if you could get it cheap a Ampeg 410HLF if available would give more bottom which is why you play bass in the first place.
8. Some players are self-taught. However it never hurts to find an instructor/teacher active player to start you off correctly. You can only learn and do so much with books and in todays world the internet. Everybody wants your $$$ but having an in-person guide is worth it. Recently I decided to learn guitar and piano (again!). I have two active musician / teachers. Best of luck.....
9. I like this forum due to the fact that I get great responses from the members. Maybe because most of the people are from the UK and a broad. As far as spam goes I really don't know too much about that.....Keep up the good work.....
10. I just bought a Fender American Deluxe Precision 4 String Electric Bass (Montego Black - Rosewood Fingerboard) for $1299 US. This new bass fresh from the factory is a beauty. The fact is , the bass is a tool and not a stand alone instrument. I'm not a soloist and I don't need an electric bass that costs as much as a Rollix Watch. I have however put in a whole lot more money into my amps . There is one site that some know about if not check out this site and dream a little: http://www.bassemporium.com/
11. I'm in South Fla. ... getting back to the bass after many many years of doing nothing, no gear either. Now, I have too much to list . I am taking guitar lessons road. I think from the bottom up and also taking drums at that . As far as doing gigs, hopefully I'll get something on bass but thats some months away, maybe longer......I'm learning new song lists...........................................I miss one thing and that's playing super loud on bass. I can't wait to turn it up................................
12. I just looked up your bass, really nice looking 5 string! I'm more into traditional stuff, I just bought a new Fender American P Bass V. I love the sustain and sound from it..........................................
13. I have purchased new tube amps. The Fender Bassman 300 (without a fan) is a great sounding head with Fender cabs. I don't anticipate any issues in the near future. Ampeg's on the other hand are up and down as far as quality goes. IMO the CL is their top product. The VR and the svt2PRO were returned due to quality issues. At this price level, be careful what you buy!!!. Many people purchae used due to $$$ and reputation of the equipment I understand this but when you see old Ampeg tube amps on EBAY the price seems to be way to high for something that will require more $$$ to get working correctly. My opinions are based on shellong out a lot of $$$, keeping some and sending others back. My steady everyday amp is the SvT4-pro(pre-amp tube ) which is capable of running (2) SvT810E cabs (way too **** Loud!!!) in both mono or stereo. The toughest is knowing how far you should go with something. If you buy new, why start messing with it at the service shop? The Ampeg VR which I posted about was a case in point. The fan was too loud for me,sound was great and the 2nd channel was too dirty . I got posts about how to fix these issues and I said why should I be the one to do this? I shelled out $$$ for a new amp not B-stock. This situation comes up a lot with these bass amps. I know there are members reading this post that can relate to this either in the USA or over on your side of the pond.........Have a great day!!!
14. I bought a squire J bass for $200 US and it sounds great, I have better instruments but this one is a great back-up. Best of luck .....
15. I'm over the weight limit. kg or lbs. it doesn't matter.. I have a small practice amp and that's a Fender Rumble 60, the first one I bought last year(hardly use it !!) . I can see downsizing the heads, I just finished with returning an Ampeg VR head and it is 85lbs or 38.5 kg which doesn't sound as heavy. The trade-off in cab size isn't worth it. I almost bought (2) 212 Genz Benz cabs but the total price was twice that of one Ampeg 810E cab. I still might eventually go smaller but for now I really love the bigg sound. The trend is to go lighter and the manufacturers are responding to that need. Still, Its like going from a Hummer to a Toyota Prius Hybrid, don't you think?
