1. I play and record for various friends, funk soul, reggae, gospel, latin house....Simple one...., what would you choose bass wise?..i need some thoughts from you guys/girls whom have experience with some of these instruments. Celinder update 5 Ken Smith BSR5 LowEnd Jazz 5 Alleva Copollo Fbass BN5 Nordy VJ5 if you like this genre what would you go for..any more luthiers.. How would GB's Shukers and Sei's go down in urban gospel??
2. Do you like the sound of any other bass you have heard? Youve got the best bass to upgrade IMO..not that it needs it...Awsome instrument... In my limited experience EMG's might give you the sound youve been looking for..Lots of midrange, very bright....No pre, just Active J's...very easy to solder in place....or some Nordstrand's will give you some awsome warm punch..Some may correct me on this??.. I agree with Acidbasses philosophy but i recently bought a bass that really did change my mind, on the way i think about, and play a bass,it was the Sei....It really does get alot better when you go custom..... but i still totally connect with a Fender Jazz, it will never leave me... The bottom line is, listen to as many basses as you can and decide...the Jazz is a great platform to put most good gear on to these days like yours.. if it was me i would put some Nordstrand J's and a Sadowsky pre in it, or even the Sadowsky pre/DI...Totally sweet...the best combo in the world..IMHO..or just as good leave the bass and get an Aguilar Tone Hammer...this has got to be the best option to altering you bass!!!!
3.
I think he means that the difference is that THIS ...pickup has two small magnets at either side of each string, whereas one with single polepieces would look something like THIS ...albeit the 5 string version Danny
erm...i stand corrected..that will be the beer..
4. Simon..im not one for Ric's, but that is so beautiful..seriously im getting GAS for a Ric, and thats rare....!!!!!.Would love to play it...
5. I think there are a few things you need to take into account - Rick pickups are single coil, have pole pieces directly under the strings (rather than smaller ones either side>>>>QUOTE.. Erm....so does a jazz me love..
6. good god, these are some of the finest collection of basses ive seen hear on BC, this side of CK's instruments
7. Insane Barrie...How many pickups!!!??? Why does it have 3 Aguilar OBP3's?? Must sound monstrously funky..
8. Sei Jazz 5; too many of these being sold here lately, guess they look great but are too clean and polite sounding unless you play in a jazz-fusion trio?>>>QUOTE There is nothing overrated about a Sei Jazz!
9. TRADED....
10.
Aw, come on B. sell the Ostinato and do the deal on the Bacchus. You know you want to.....
Ha ha... BB if i could i would..The Ostinato is a hard sell! Difficult to sell a bass with no pedigree! i have gas for a erm...Ken Smith BSR5....a couple of basses going soon!
11. We need pics to sell here bro/sis!!
12. Thanks P...
13. Ive been thinking hard about this cause this bass is awsome..But because of the amazing Sei, and my SR5, ive been thinking about trading this up.... You know the score..... Lakland 55-01 deluxe ,from platypus for £550.00........ amazing Nordstrand pickups, dito Glockenglang preamp, Hipshot tuners.....Ive changed the control knobs for a lighter set..you wouldnt believe how much weight it takes off..i will include the originals if wanted.. This is smokin tone wise!!!!..seriously, One of the best if played, hopefully platypuss will back me up on this......I sometimes jam with a chap from a church who plays a Ken Smith and he loves the tone of this bass through his Eden....Loads of options from the EQ..and just about the best active slap tone ive heard....., Although it looks mint in the pics, its not perfect..hard to see in the pics...Dont get me wrong its still pretty good nick....There is swirling in the finish, and there are finger marks from the 12th to the 19th fret..its had some solos played on it this one.......But i like that for some reason? But generaly its in great nick...I have cleaned and polished it vey well...so its a used bass in very good nick... Trade wise im a bit stuck..This bass is not worth a fortune but it sounds amazing, you wont get a bass for this money that sounds this good.....im not sure active wise, anything could touch it (i could be wrong)..so im thinking passive.... trade wise, maybe a erm......Sukop..he he, seriously, maybe a unlined fretless Jazz (im wishing) ...Moon jazz, Lakland J0,..I realise that some of the basses ive mentioned are maybe worth a little more than this bass, so a small cash adustment will be made... I would also consider trading for Rack equipment pre amp's etc I would say this bass has got the tone of a bass 3 times the price, but i know i cant expect too much more than what its worth.. Anyway show me what you got....As ive said this bass tone wise is very very good, up there with USA stuff..<<<end of sales pitch>>> I may add(i know this annoys some), but im not sure of this because i love this bass, but show me what you got..thankyou.. All the best...B
14. Your right this is a major bargain
15.
HEy Bubinga 5! How many basses have you got now?? Yep those Sei basses are well built and sound great, although the one i tried a while back did sound a little to middly for me, but nowdays you can make a bass sound like whatever you like! Enjoy it. I thought the sadowsky u sold me was awsome but could not live with the vinatge vibe. I think this funkmister i have now is pretty unbelivable in all departments, but will get it set up soon for me. Maybe post some pics of the bass? ATB Rich.
Hey Rich..Ha ha not too many..2 have gone...I dont really want loads of instruments,im just trying to wittle it down to basses that i cant find any faults in and i adore playing..The Fender CS being one and the Sei being the other. The stingray is pretty awsome too...I will eventually sell or trade off the others as i only need basses for the music im doing... I cant help but want a Ken Smith or a Celinder mind..
16.
They were about when I was a teenager, which was a bloody long time ago. I suppose. Too obvious though. I've got Hot Fuss and never really listened to it, bought it on the strength of Mr Brightside but it never grabbed me. Always assumed Kings of Leon were a bit American for me, but I'll give all those a go. Ta.
Show how much i know about rock
17. I recently bought a Sei Jazz 5...I played it this evening and was blown away...First off its the most comfortable bass ive ever played, partly because of the shallow heel, and carved out inside horn, and because of the weight, just so light its so easy to play.. I like to play alot of Gospel type runs to warm up, that on my Lakland are a handful but on the Sei they just seem to flow much easier, partly because of the string spacing..I also think the tone has alot to do with it,as it just makes you want to play it that much more...... A previous owner (Gwilim) installed a U Retro and i love it..A multitude of tonal variants from Dub to fingerstyle honk..it really is a very comprehensive unit..It gives you so many options...My favorite is the treble up, mids rolled off and some bass to give some gospel slap tones.. I put some DR's (the only string for me) on it and its seriously smoking!! Awsome punch and zing from the high end..I have a EBS Multicomp on the way, and ive got a feeling this is going to be the best sound ive ever heard from an electric bass.... .Ive played quite a few high, ish end basses but i really feel that a bass like this is what a high end bass is all about...I do think this is the bass that i will come back to every time...It so suits my style of playing... What do these luthiers do to an instrument to make them so much more playable than say an off the shelf bass...Martin Peterson is a very clever man...I have a new respect for luthiers of this caliber... I feel so at home on this bass...ok... im just going to put it to bed... Thanks molan
18. Oh please dont start a Zon thread..Please Please!!!
19. Thomastik's or my favorite Labella's...Not sure about the QC issues......I loved them...
20.
Hi There - wonder if you might be interested in my v cool SR5, 2006 mint in MM case, £795? White/black/white p guard included. Could deliver on Monday, am in Edinburgh! Cheers, BB
Man that SR5 rocks..
21. Well thats why it was communicated in a PM. Thats just common sense!
22. Ive just been reading through this thread and im embarrassed...This guy just may have started to get pissed off when someone blurted out what was suppose to be a private message about a the price of his bass Its ok to disagree with the price of someones bass, but most have what ive seen has just been sarcastic and said to annoy... And i quote >>>> 'At least knowone mentioned the War'.. What are you on mate??? This made me really angry...How do you think this might make Jazz73 feel......There's too many people on here that dont think about what there saying...Like the pedophile joke last week... Your not musicians in my mind, your kids who play bass.. I can bet Jazz73 did not feel welcome here and prob wont come back again..
23. Why does it have to be a girl???? How sexist??
24.
Hi, I have this 4-string fretless Stingray: Made on Feb 23rd 2000. Pearl Lavender body, fretless Pau Ferro fingerboard. Described by Ernie Ball company as "most likley the only one we ever made exactly like this". Complete with original Musicman hard-case. Displayed in Bass World shop in Kent until sold to me new last month. I've noodled with it fewer than 10 times in the bedroom. Never been to a rehearsal, practice or gig. Technically "used", but to all intents and purposes it's as new. It's a beautiful bass. I keep picking it up and gazing wistfully at it. But I can't get on with the Stingray tone - I've realised I'm a P-tone man. So, I'm beginning to consider selling it, or possibly trading it for a Highway 1 Precision or MIJ/CIJ Precision with cash my way. But - what's it worth? The only new Stingray Fretless I can find on the web is £1600. The one I have is unique, pristine and beautiful. Seriously folks, any idea of what I might sell this for, please? Steve
Hi Steve.. Unfortunately it really isnt a good time sell a bass at the mo..You may be shocked at how low you may have to go...ive seen Stingrays go for as little as £600 here...Yours, being new (and it is because i saw this bass very recently at Bass World) and unique may go for more...In my opinion your better off trading for something of comparable value...Just my opinion mind..Good luck..
