30th Birthday - Bass purchase/order to celebrate!
bubinga5 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
You got so much scope in that price range....Its the sort of price range where MOST.. of the top builders price there top of the line basses....even some of the hyper basses are in your price range second hand..Ken Smith, Celinder, Alleva, etc.. I personally would write a list of stuff you do love on a bass... and stuff that you dont like..then with that list wittle down what comes into line with what you want...Or if your going custom communicate this with the builder... or the other way, is to go out and try as many different basses as possible..then with all that knowledge under your belt, take it from there.....Myself i would look at Nordstrand, Sei...Martin Peterson is a genius... I think its great to name loads of amazing instrument makers, but you would be suprised at how many you dont like...there all very different.. Your welcome to try my Sei J5 if your ever down this way... -
ha some mixed opinions i guess, what do people mean when they say mim jazz? also ive never heard of the classic series to be honest are they nice? also in reply to bubinga5 "i have a jazz...i swapped the USA pups for Nordstrand NSJ4se's and it blows me away...amazing the difference.." how much did it cost to get that done and get the pick ups and stuff ect and also too russfm what type of music do u play with it and stuff cheers for all the replys guys everyones always quality on this site
Ok,...BH.. MIM means made in mexico....The Nordstrand's cost me £200 and put them in myself..very easy to do with a soldering iron..the standard jazz is a great instrument, but the pups IMHO, arent the best voice for it... with all Fender (although newer are better) try before you buy...

I often play in the dark so i cant see the instrument...i prob look a bit odd but its a great way of training your ear... your ears are your eyes as someone famous said?

I was listening to this album tonight...me and my sister over the years have always thought this album was very very good..way better than any acid jazz albums of the time, and for which it became associated with..ie Galliano, BNH, JTQ, etc.... for me and sis it was a very special album of music that was way more original than anything else out there,.. for those who may not know im going to waffle...Carleen Anderson, who eventually had her own album 'True Spirit' which was a gem. ( among other amazing things)was the singer of this awsome band..with Masta Ace, Maceo P, and Fred Wesley as contributers. they were recording in Paul Wellers studio also... Tis really a short lived band that are very engrained in my mind...Very funky..very original.using funk and a hip hop of the times tht was just so cool.. lots of you people know this stuff anyway.. imo the best YD tune.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cXKGzqq99Y Her solo stuff...amazing.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJuYjUZvsLA Brand New Heavies doing ...Apparrently Nothing with C Anderson..Fantastic...that is a freakin awsome lookin SB jazz Andrew is playing.. Check out Chris Ballin from incognito's Beneath the Surface album on backing V..and That geezer on the piano?? The bottom line is..do you need it//do you enjoy playing a 6/7...i really enjoyed my old TRB..sonically it was amazing....did i need it...No.. Would i get another 6 yeah...to be honest i loved the Yamaha, was maybe more than i needed, and was heavy, but why not have that range..it sounded awsome with so much punch and grind...you dont have to use the 2 extra...no more flying down the FB
just wondering what the differences are between the standard jazz and p basses and the deluxe versions other than them being active and haveing the extra controls and wether there worth the extra money in ur opinions cheers thanks in advannnnnnnnnnnce
i cant talk for P basses but... personally..and i mean personally... the standard Jazz bass is way better..the US deluxe is IMHO a not very nice J bass shape..they have scooped the lower horn, and i dont really like it..its like taking a ferrari and chopping off the bumper... i played a US Deluxe Jazz, it did sound really nice..and had a nice slap tone.. but i didnt like the pre. the pups are ok on a standard or Deluxe, but they could be better......IMHO..its not what fender really concentrate on like smaller builders like LF, Bart, or Nordstrand do......... ..A fender jazz is a great sounding bass anyway but it can sound better depending on your taste i guess.. I would go for the standard Jazz...as pure a bass as you can get these days...if you want active, there are a lot of options to give you a killer super jazz sound,... passive or not........depending on your cash budget.. i have a jazz...i swapped the USA pups for Nordstrand NSJ4se's and it blows me away...amazing the difference.. So i would say no...IMO..although the US Deluxe jazzers are lovely, they are not worth the extra £...If your savy... you can get so much more for your £ for a sick Jazz... i would go for a MIJ P or J...they are just as good as the US instruments at a fraction of the price...if not more consistent... throw in some active/passive pups, or a sexy pre you got a serious sounding jazz bass

In my limited experience.. Do you need a ERB in the music you are playing..i see you play a Jazz in your avatar Do you mind the extra weight that some bring...my TRB was heavy for more than an hour of playing... as i said, I had a Yamahs TRB6, and it was awsome...but for me at the time, was too many strings...i just didnt need the high C...how much range do you need for the music your playing...do you solo alot...not that a 6, 7, 8 should be seen as just that..wonderfull groovin goes on with an ERB... i like to think of a ERB as a bass for everything..groove, chord's, solo,..for those who feel comfortable usin em,... mostly because of the nature of making such a beast..and arent that cheap..are amazing sounding instruments, with way more sonic range than my Jazz.....wish i still had my TRB...incredible instrument for how much i paid for it.. would really like to try one again though..and i would prob look at Yamaha or Conklin Would love a Low End 6 Jazz...or a F Bass BN6..or the rest of these wonders of the 6 string world...that KS has got to sound incredible!!!
That sounds like my ideal first rehearsal to be honest! Sounds like it isn't for you, though. If it doesn't feel right at the first rehearsal, just cut your losses I say. Better than things not working out further down the road, more time wasted then.
Yeah each to there own Will...just out of interest what bit sounded like your ideal rehearsal...they were such a good laugh and i talked with the guys about music for ages...they loved there GO GO too...but i got to be honest i mentioned maybe working around some basic chord changes as a starter...we did and he(i mean both) werent playing the chords and it sounded bad...bad ears and lack of knowledge.. its ok to turn up to a rehearsal if you have a very good ear and no theory knowledge..but to have neither is a no no...you cant play at the end of the day...add that with pissed and stoned....why and how, are you playing an instrument ??.. im no pro, but i think you should approach it as one if you want to learn and want to play some good music

Went to a rehearsal last week...i was really looking forward to it... as ive been bandless for a while...So i get a call from a guy in Bristol looking for a hip hop funk bassist kind of thing..there into stuff like quantic soul and general modern soul funk i drove from Chester where i was working, got there late which was not good (i got stuck in traffic), as i hate being late for anything, nevermind a first rehearsal..i said i was very sorry... Found the place eventually..Walked in with my gear to a room that is the old police station in bristol...the first thing i noticed was the smell...Very strong Skunk weed..they were drinking also...the place looked like it had a major drug session the previous night..i mean there were hundreds of cans, bottles of booze, ashtrays everywhere... i would NEVER!!! invite someone to a rehearsal unless it was a place i thought was good for me and them to play.. Now i do smoke from time to time, and am a big believer that it adds to my creative mind, but you have to keep it in check...these guys were really high..and they were drinking scrumpy cider.. started a random groove going, and it got pretty messy..the drummer was loosing time, the guitarist's was thrashing around with no sort of musical direction...did i say there was 2 guitarist's..(my worst nightmare)..The female singer was scatting also...There were some parts where it got quite good when there was a little space in the music, because they could groove.... but generally it was just a mess.. what do you do in these situations..who am i to give anyone any musical direction, but i know when something is not working...they were lovely people who were really passionate about this sort of music, but they needed a kick up the arse to say open your eyes.. The guitarist said to me after.."he loved getting lost in the groove"...and as i do love getting lost in the groove, it has has to have some boundries and structure.. even if its a ten min funkathon... i hate to slag anyone else off, as every one enjoys there music in different ways, but i just think drugs and alchohol are best left alone when when playing music..thinking up ideas when stoned are great, but if you want to play and record them, you got to be sober...well drink free anyway, as i have recorded very slightly stoned once and i was super sharp. anyone else had any bad first rehearsals?

Do you want active or passive? There are some awsome bargain jazz basses to be had on here...Your nearly in used Sadowsky territory with your budget, depends if its your limit... You would be hard pushed to find a better bargain than this..A proper Jazz Bass...No i dont know Steve. This all sounds like there are too many variables for us less experienced..(me)...would be nice to have a general guide on do's or donts, for those of us who arent in the know... A sticky (for dummies) on this would help many im sure.. come on 51m0n!!!

Depends on the piece of ash....and ash isnt really known as a particularly heavy wood... The key thing here is to try before you buy...
