I think for the most you can get away with most basses for most musical situations.. for the most the audience wont notice... BUT ive always thought thats not really the point.....its really what spurs YOU on to play better and what tone you like to hear when you play......i play much better on some basses better than others...thats because i think "wow i love that tone" and it inspires me....thats the key i think...well it is for me... ok bass is new to you, but its always good to do your research and not waste money on mistakes...ive done plenty of that...

I would definately try an S5...very articulate, with a huge sound..very tight B string..VERY well made..IMO way better than any Fender ive had in fit and finish...Im a jazz bass guy but when it comes to 5 strings (which is i think you want if not a 6) the S5 beats the Fender Jazz 5 on build quality for most of the time...Tone wise thats your call..The lego you refer to seems like your describing a P bass pickup...(big fat Fender sound) in my experience you wont notice BO (Bolt on neck) to NT (Neck through construction) ive played many and havent noticed much...i have a Modulus bolt on and it would wipe the floor with any neck through when it comes to sustain..but this is most de the graphite neck but even so there aint much in it.....this is usual selling point when it comes to NT...apart from the fact they look beautiful...i always like to take the neck off my basses though..more variables to setting up.. the key here is to get some models on your short list, and see if you can try them out...Try a Fender Jazz, Fender Precision, Stingray 4/5...these very rarely let down..do some research and go from there...know one really does it like these basses... then on this bassis try the variants of these... Try Try Try..its you who has to like the sound bro... Keep in mind a Stingray is active and if you like the tone, there are many Jazz basses that are active which give a different tone... research and youtube are your friend...

good budget for a second hand bass....Do you have any shape preference? What about a Lakland 44-02 /55-02..Joe Osborn 5 Jazz bass,Yamaha TRB 6, Stingray 5 are simply awsome basses..the B string one my old one was simply to die for..

While Sei may be fantastic basses (and I do believe that Martin Petersen is one of the best bass luthiers in the world) I don't think they'll ever be really collectable simply because the instruments are all too individual and different.quote.... i agree with this...
I thought the whole thing was VERY tongue-in-cheek (especially the shades) and VERY funny. I don't think he takes himself half as seriously as some people are taking his advert.
you would be suprised..

IMO this is the best vid for Superstition...good old Pbass...simple groove... the only bit of riff is small... the main riff has nothing to do with the bass.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDZFf0pm0SE

Why don't bass companies do sound samples of their basses..
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
Ok.. its a very general thing..Lakland have a set up like.. Fingerstyle Pick Slap.. for every bass.. that works for me...if i was to buy a Laky on those parameters i look at those and hear what i like.....i know i would get a tone out of that said bass... Ok, you have your style so maybe you could get more, but i know where my bassics are coming from....Every one loves a certain tone and they recognise a good one....it dont take much to take the cover off it... -
Change the pre first...for something like a Sadowsky or a Bart 3 band...the preamp is the downfall for the MIJ Miller jazz.IMHO...
-
Ok im no luthier.. ....my point is why oh why do bass builders not show what there basses can do...im aware that alot of bass luthiers dont do it because of the choice that they give but Mr John Shuker does it and he gives a wealth of choice... this surely is a good way to promote your instruments,.. letting people know what they sound like...Lakland do it....im baffled??? Ok its this simple... sound samples Ash body with..... Barts or BL's : Alder Body with...Barts or BL's : and all the variants... you get the picture it would bring in so much business surely...i want to know what these basses sound like... i brought a Sadowsky RV5 once and i really wanted to know what they sounded like. but i couldnt..ok ive got youtube but it aint the same... i wanted to know what a Sadowsky sounded like... i bought it blind in the end from you tube clips and good word...ok it was a bad ass bass.. is there any reason why Roger and other companies dont do this?.. the only company that i know are Lakland and it is soooo helpfull, in the choice of a bass.....i just cant understand why these bass companies dont do it.. Before you say it im aware that alot of these bass builders dont have there own pup or amp/preamp brands, but alot do and still dont erm......do it...whats up...
Oh yes..it so would....good to look at all aspects though as im sure you do...i dont as much as i should... great we are all in to different stuff though... good to mix all this stuff together though in to a mixing pot...how does music move forward otherwise...

Where can i go for non bias help on the tone of a bass?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
i've had a few lessons with doctor_of_the_bass (Nick Smith) on here. i know he's a BC'er, but he has (and has had) a vast collection of basses in his time. he's one of the nicest, funkiest, most unassuming people i've ever met. he's based in peterborough, but travels around to lots of music shops, so you never know, a hook-up could be arranged. try PM'ing him if you don't get any better suggestions.
Hey phil..well hes a bit of a legend hey..i will try him..thanks bro... -

bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
maybe it a two way thing...i thought thats what they are there for..and thats what you pay them for..im sure Roger Sadowsky wouldnt push his own taste on you...hes there to find what you want... the only i can think of is Mr J Shuker...he lives so far away from me...
