1. Hands down my favourite Jazz Funk record of all time from Norman Connors. Those horns are just great. A very sharp, well put together piece of music. There is no way one part of my body can not move to this. http://youtu.be/FbePHK_sCdk
2. This is just amazing Donald Byrd. Incognito have recently covered this to amazing effect. http://youtu.be/aLs3oK-EuDs
3. Kamasi favourite. http://youtu.be/3DM9fGXHhlk
4. It's my favourite genre of music by far. It mixes elements of soul jazz and funk. These are a couple of my favourites. Incognito an album of there/his origins. http://youtu.be/5Ce3c3NIHp4 There are hundreds of great records from this genre that I love but this is in my top ten. It's so perfectly put together a piece of music.from the awsome bass line to the synth, to the keys and those fantastic bongos. http://youtu.be/T5R3_SbE7XQ What are your favorites.?
5.
Never heard of 'Sting' in articulation terms. I always thought 'Sting' was the terrible racket a Drummer makes after a comedian tells a bad gag on a cabaret gig.
budum tssss.
6.
Gilmour is my all time favorite guitarist. He can portray more with less notes than anyone I have listened to. The first solo in Comfortably Numb always makes me emotional.
Wasn't he voted best guitarist of all time in Guitar Magazine about 5 times in a row?. Hendrix was second. I would go with that.
7.
Do you mean a trill (swiftly varying between two adjacent notes a semitone apart) or actual vibrato (where pitch usually varies by a lot less than a semitone)? If you're talking about a trill, strike the note and hammer on and off (either a fret up or a fret down) swiftly. There's a limit to how long it will sustain, but it works. It's very tricky to slide between two fretted notes - buzz is almost inevitable as you cross the fret and the pressure on the string is released momentarily. Applies especially if you use roundwounds. Vibrato much easier on a fretless - you mention Sting. He plays fretless and would, I suspect, use one for a song that demands vibrato.
I think Dan when he says Sting, it's a term for a trill/vibrato etc. Yeah i had never heard of it either.
8. Check this Lesson out from Scott. Tis very good and very informative. I've got to say I had never heard the terminology Sting before. http://youtu.be/pt-rEuQMOIM
9. Some just amazing groove bass playing on this classic Gil Scott Heron track, from the man on a P Bass. Meshell picks up a P bass at the end too.! http://youtu.be/xtPVoV7moMU
10. I get dings in my playing , bum notes in a jam station etc. Why shouldn't my bass. We're in this together.
11.
Bass as a melodic and lead instrument is as valid as virtually any other instrument. It's people's narrow-mindedness that's the problem. People have preconceived ideas of what an instrument should, and shouldn't do.
+ lots of what you just said.
12.
I think you are talking about 'Shake'. Marlowe DK covers this at about 4:00 (FunkyTrills and Shakes - All the Video is worth watching)This. For me and I'm sure lots of bassists, it's were you play them also. That comes from listening and musical instinct. I've listened to so many great soul vocalists and that's where I feel my learning of vibrato in its many forms comes from. He also covers the various vibrato techniques. The 'Shake' is still a kind of trill, so it still has to have note value to sound in the groove. (8th/16th's Demi Semi Quavers etc) Just random speed shakes can sound messy and not funky at all.
This. For me and I'm sure many bassists it's where you play them. It comes from listening and musical instinct.I've listened to so many great vocalists, and that's where my learning of vibrato in its many forms comes from. Where Anita Baker placed her vibrato was ingrained into me.
13. It was Rogers way of saying he was burned by the shaking hands to a record deal/music industry. Have a Cigar,s lyrics are along those lines
14. Trivia time. Does anyone know what the album cover on Wish You were Hear is about.? The man shaking hands with a man on fire.?
15. 26 minutes of a masterpeice in music. Imo. http://youtu.be/8UXircX3VdM
16.
A great tune. I actually prefer the alt. version with Dave & Rog's vox... I've got loads of faves... Echoes, Sheep, Not Now John, Fat Old Sun, SOYCD... just a great band.
I think Roy had way better vocals on this. Imo. Although Roger didn't like them.
17. I'm sure I was listening to this band in the Womb. My mum was a big fan, and when she passed away I got her original vinyl of The Wall. Its still in perect condition. Every now and again I have a yearning to listen to my back catalogue of Pink Floyd. I think it's probably the most special music I've ever listed to. I have many favorites like Us and Them, Money, Breath. This is a real favorite of mine. Love it's bluesy feel. Listening wise, Pink Floyd have there place. But a very special one.Not typical when I think of Pink Floyd but a great record with lyrics about Rogers disgust with the record industry.Vocals by Roy Harper http://youtu.be/hMr3KtYUCcI
18. I'm confused. You mean one preamp, but you can control eq from the front, and there are dip switches under the control cavity at the back.? What happened to the truss rod cover.? Love these Killer B,s mind.
19. Sorry I was being rude James. Looking forward to pics.
20. That has got be the bass guitar advertisement, with the least information I have ever seen.
21. Is Meshell Ndegeocello playing.?
22. Saw them in Cheltenham. We're very good. Had a drink with Cory Henry and Micheal at a bar in the town. Both fantastic musicians and down to earth guys.
23. Also check out SOME, Maceo Parker. http://youtu.be/VvmbS8RperU
