Well done, Bassassin. The other Rick rip-off I was alluding to was Handyman Guitars, according to a friend of mine who spotted one being used ina Italian Genesis tribute band. I can't find anything about Handyman on the net but here's the photo. Also, here's a link to some guy who built a replica of Mike Rutherfords, non-Rick doubleneck! Rutherford Rick BTW, the Finns love their metal, don't they?? -
I think Bill Nash source parts from various companies. I have Clarky/Cairobill's red JB63 with DiMarzio Ultrajazz in it and it's one of the best basses I've ever played. The necks, beware, are medium C and certainly not vinatge Jazz so be prepared for that. As to the P/T-basses, I can't comment. And although I've just bought a Fender Jazz CS, I'd certainly give the RW a go, but ethey seem to be creeping up in price. Try one then try the NAsh and take it from there. And Clarky, if your reading this - let me know if you ever want to move that other JB63 of yours!

Aircraft-carrier lapels and creases in flares that would slice your fingers to the bone (shudder!).
i´m in touch with guy. .i´m not sure whether he is a member of this forum or not... but i can ask him.. he´s a real character.. it´s absolutely great to chat with him. I highly recommend his book. Just get it if you can. You won´t regret. He´s making his return to the stage for a run at the Edinburgh Festival. The show is being held at Fringe@Le Monde between August 22nd - 30th. Tickets are just £5 Pink Floyd’s bassist returns for the first time since his 2007 Edinburgh sell-out run to regale us with more hilarious tales from the mini bar and the absurdities of life on the road for the touring musician. ... Having wowed crowds the world over with ‘My Bass and other Animals’ and ‘Breakfast of Idiots’, Guy updates us on the goings on at the pointy end of the music business, and the madness that comes with breathing the rarefied air of the Superstar, including one very bizarre Argentinean trip…. 'Wonderfully indiscreet, Pratt's self-deprecating wit is irresistible' (Mojo). It’s 4am. The alarm is set for 5. You’re in Belgrade.. or possibly Buenos Aires. All these Hotel rooms look the same.. There’s a noise coming from the bathroom and only a miniature of Baileys left in the mini bar.. No worries you’ll sleep on the plane.. You hope to hell it’s a travel day and that pile of ashes in the corner isn’t your Passport. Welcome to an average Wednesday in the life of a touring musician. ‘Guy Pratt’s Wake-up Call’ is the next instalment of the bizarre, poignant and often hilarious life of a professional bassist told by a natural raconteur. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry, you’ll probably sue
You sure you're not Guy's agent , cos that's a shameless plug for the show! Might pop along again to see him.

There must be an internal short, then, that's draining the battery. An 18V system, esp with Duracell (Procell even better) should last for months, even with heavy usage.
I may check that lemmy book out. Is it along the same lines as guys book?
Pretty Much. Factual and plenty of humour. The episode where Brian Robertson starts to lose it is both funny and sad. Lemmy spins a good yarn.

Their Rick model looks total pants, as does Tokai's version. The Anniversary one gets close, though.
Didn't Guy used to play Status basses? I'll be honest, I hope it was the room sounding dire in the video, because the video itself does the bass no favours at all!
I'd say it's the combination of the room and the camera mic. If there was a sound guy there he would have had a decent AKG shotgun that, I think, would have picked up more definition than what is heard. BTW, none of my stackers sound like that, so please do pardon the bass!

From what I've heard, sometimes they just assign a blanket code, like clicking 'other' on a web form. The commodity code should be given by you to your shipper (this I discovered back in April) to make it easier for UKBA to do their calculations. If it's not there, then they have to look it up and with this being the age of the information superhighway then that should be no problem for them. Yet it seems it is, judging by their figures. The only thing I haven't seen on their breakdowns is that there may be different rates of duty for items coming from different countries but that is not highlighted or explained in their breakdowns either. You have to write to the UKBA at Siskin Parkway West in Coventry and you will need to supply the sender's shipping docket and the customs charge sticker, or scans thereof. But don't expect a reply too quick though. UKBA sat on my letter for over a month and only when I got my MP involved did they put themselves in gear. These folk forget they are civil servants, at the end of the day. Something that I have had need to remind them of. BTW, since April, with these last three consecutive imports, UKBA have so far got the cumulative figure wrong by >£70. £70 which is better off in my bank account. So you can see why I'm rather bolshy about this when you factor in the vintage Ricks and Fenders I've imported from the 'States over the last ten years and never queried the import duty.
If he`s reading this thread, can you tell me why you weren`t playing with Roxy Music on Johnathan Ross`s last show? It was the guy who plays with Robbie Williams (cue someone who knows his name) who is a great player but the only reason I watched the bloomin show was to watch Guy on bass! Is he playing with Roxy in January when they are on tour? Jez
He probably knows what a c*** B. Ferry is and doesn't need the grief.
It has to be said. I effing love Guy Pratt. He's the player Floyd always deserved and the only author who has ever kept my attention all the way through a book.
Try 'White Line Fever' by Lemmy; you'll be amazed. I know I was. A real fun, interesting read.

I thought I'd posted on this somewhere else a while back but I can't find it right now. Electric guitars have a 'commodity code' that allows HMRC/UKBA to calculate the duty and thus the VAT. The commodity code is 9267901000 and this gives a duty rate of 3.2%. This is added to the value of the goods plus it's shipping and insurance charges (if any) and that total then gets VAT added to it. UKBA should, if the item arrives at Coventry International Hub, look at the item description, allocate it's correct code and calculate accordingly. Thing is, these guys are not doing it, even when the correct commodity code is on the shipping docket. It's starting to annoy the hell out of me: I'm not here to their job for them and if they want their pound of flesh then I expect them to do it properly! I've already received two adjustment refunnds this year from them and my MP is involved with the issues as well. It's not fair, and they think that cos their part of HMRC they can do as they see fit. Well, not with this fella! Hope that helps.

This idea isn't new: there was a similar system in the '80s but, surprisingly, it never caught on.

Stacker replied to SignsOfDelirium_bassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Custom build, without a doubt. There's a logo on the headstock but I can't make it out. There is a guy in Italy doing some really good Rick copies but i'm not sure if this is one as his are pretty much identical. John Hall will be getting his keks in a twist and calling his lawyers if he sees this! -
Just a quick update to remind Basschatters to check the duty that the UK Border Agency are charging on imported electric guitars. I have just caught them out again - for the 3rd consecutive time since I started checking - with incorrect calculations. I shudder to think how much money I've lost to them over the past ten years of importing kit. Be vigilant, guys.
A Gherson jazz copy. Played like crap, but the pickups were amazing.
Yeh, I guy I knew, back in the day, had one and it sounded great! Another real dog I had was a 4001 Rick back in the '80s. A weak, dreadful sounding instrument that I began to hate and had trouble getting rid of. Didn't put me off them, though.

Mate & I saw Guy at the Edinburgh Festival a few years back, promoting his book. His 'act' was mainly lifted from the book and he played a few bass lines which was really cool. He didn't have that stacker but his old blue Jazz. And as to acquiring original stack pot Jazzes, a fella from Edinburgh, back in the '80s or so, picked up a girl in a bar one and they went back to hers. Fast forward from the usual and he tells her he's a bass player. "Oh, my uncle used to be one, too! In fact, his guitar is under this bed!" she says and pulls out from under the bed a dusty Fender caes in which lies a 1960 stacker Jazz. The uncle wanted £50 for it, or somesuch. Love hearing of stuff like this.

The worst, without a doubt, was a Washburn 8-string bass, Explorer shape. It buzzed like a hornet's nest, was impossible to play and, beacause the octave strings were anchored/tuned at the rear, the G string kept popping it's windings. I kept it for about a week then took it back to the shop. Pure sh*t!
