1.
My Ricky comment was in reference to the Labi Siffre track. I don't know why, there are one or two slightly less muted notes that just said, "Rickenbacker". Just a hunch, probably wrong
Aahh.. ok. That bassline wasn't coming out great on my laptop. Must have a listen on the PC sound system.
2.
Absolutely, you get the immediate attack (click) with little or no sustain. Listening to it again, I'm thinking Ricky. Here's a similar sounding bass.
The best example of '60s 'click-bass', but I'd reckon that Love Affair track is a Jazz. Curious - can I ask why you think it's a Rick?
3.
Really ? Nee-oh dimmyum here Here is Scotland admittedly. We proably invented it...
Probably. Mike Vanden certainly was building pickups up here with Neodymium back in '97-'98 before he sold the rights to Fishman. Not sure if he's Scottish, though.
4. Give it up as a bad idea, mate. For one, the controls and selector switch will be in your way all the time.. Bets thing to do is keep an eye out for old '70s Jap copies or current Chinese ones.
5. You've waited long enough and showed loyalty to a brand that has not been returned by its distributor. Get your money back; you've tortured yourself enough. Gone way beyond what I would have put up with.
6. I remember going in there enquiring about a bass they were advertising in Guitarist (or Bass Player) and being told it was sold, only to find out a day or so later that it was still for sale. Seems I didn't smell of enough money to those goons. Good f***ing riddance!
7. My missus takes interest in the basses I buy and the projects I knock up. She has never discouraged me from buying one I've had my heart set on, assumg there's enough coin to go round. A volatile GF from years back said she's pay off my Warwick Thumb if I danced at length with some fat hog at a wedding we attended (she did) but she was also the woman who took my new and unpaid for Custom Shop Jazz fretless and slam-ducnked it into the deck!! I thought the bass was fkd btu, miraculously, it only had a crack in the finish and I still have that basss to this day, unlike the GF!
8.
These pups are in good nick and I included them as part of my recent sale of the above. I further testify that I find our Stacker to be a chap with whom to deal with confidence.
Cheers, Shaun. She's got her new Warmoth neck on, roughed her up a bit more and is now one of my fav basses!!
9. Nails/screws were what they used to drill into the front of the body so as they could flip it over and shoot nitro. Nitro, supposedly, needs to be, or is best applied, when the body is lying flat. I detest the large holes, esp that God-awful rout from the front pup down to the cavity. How long would it take to set down the router and take a drill with a right-angled drill attachment and keep it all nice and tidy?
10. Up for sale, these two items. Taken off a recently acquired Vintage Icon jazz, these are surplus to requirements. Neck sale does not include tuners or string tree; pups include screws and foam spacer. Neck - £30, good quality bargain for a project (Now sold) Pups - £20 All less postage.
11. My second set are on their way to a punk-rocker mate's old P-bass; the other set are heading for the bin!
12. Thought this was traded??
13. Oh, dear Jesus!! See what you made me do??
14.
what's it calllllllled? Sorry, couldn't resist. Welcome!
Jeez, I remember that advert. My mates and I still come out witrh it! So Scottish.........
15. Heat treatment. Take it to Jimmy Moon in Glasgow.
16. Welll....what happened to the Westone?? You gotta let us know!
17. Dunno if it's been mentioned already (haven't read full thread) but people calling strings 'wires'. Slightly off-topic was punter mis-pronounciations of brand names and kit designations. For instance, I've heard (many times) of a Flanger being called a 'Flang-er', Westone basses got called 'West one' and my favourite from the '80s was hearing the little Roland SH-101 being referred to as a 'Roland Shee-oh-ee'. Bless 'em all.............
18.
Not used that term for a while. I prefer the word beelin as in "that pie was beelin" meaning not very nice. Yeah, get yourslef a set of Roto flats. I first tried them earlier in the year and now its the only string I use. I've got a set of the 50 gauge ones on my Precision
Aye, 'beelin', anotehr one from the past. Anyway, I've only got one other bass with flats on it - a Jap ESP Jaco clone - and might try D'addario Chromes. These other things are going in the bin.
19. Don't do the gig; your health comes first! I remember, years ago, demonstrating pianos to clients when I had a broken left pinkie at the time. Even though this was about a week or more after I'd removed the splint, the joint hurt like hell and never set correctly. Don't be a martyr to a good cause, mate. As the others said: get a dep.
20.

Bowff = Scottish word for 'rubbish'. Or worse.
21.
What's a wolf tone?
It's something to do with the string's vibration and the body's natural resonance, and this is demonstrated by an oscillation in the note, in this case the open E seems the worst. It's like it's fluctuating between E and Eb. I never noticed this with the strings the bass came with.
22. What about Dill Katz, the jazzer? I'm sure he had a non-factory fretless Jazz before Jaco.
