Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
Stacker replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Been years since I played covers but one I do remember, back in the day, was 'Take me to the river', the Talking Head's version of the Al Green number. Now, I was a BIG Heads fan back then but I grew to dread the 'doof chik, doof chik' as the drummer started the intro to the piece. 'Oh sh*t...' I would go and would relax a little as I began the bassline but I began to have the notion that 'THIS IS WRONG!!' every time I played it.Great song and it was a showstopper - in the true sense of the word! I used to move about a bit more than this song commanded cos I didn't want the punters to see me cringing as we played it. -
Insanely clean 1962 Jazz Bass....
Stacker replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That's seriously clean for a 50 year old instrument!! Where the hell has it been?? That said, some of the frets look like they've seen a bit of action but the rest - it looks unused! Surely expect to see some dulling of the chrome over time? -
Ok, so he's sent me some pix. It's a black jazz with tort plate, 62+ controls, neck with clay dots and the mute screws still in place. This is either a stacker '62 that has been modded to VVT (stackers came in oly white and black only as standard) or it's a transitional model. It certainly looks original, though I haven't seen the neck plate. But I've seen these pix before, maybe last year not ebay but on Gumtree or Craigslist and the odd references to some band called 'Grunt' confirm this to me. However, a quick scour of Gumtree and Craigslist pulls up nothing this time. Again, I have asked to view, so let's see what happens. Deanovw - the pix he sent me are a complete lift off that previous auction.

Well, it amuses me, sometimes. The D-45 seller eventually replied to me saying she was up in Orkney, when I asked about viewing/collection. No probs, I said, I'd be on the first flight up next again day from Edinburgh. The contact stopped right after that!
-
Let's see. He's emailing me pix. I've already flushed out one liar this week over a vintage Martin D-45! ;-)

Emailed him for more pix.

Naah... this one rings a bell....

No pix and the mention of a band called grunt. And zero feedback, too!

Record shops closing? Who cares? new documentary
Stacker replied to redstriper's topic in General Discussion
Loads of my mates - my age and younger - still buy vinyl. Ok, so we're in the download era but consider this: rememebr the advent of CD, how they would never scratch or break? Or the low bit-rates of mp3? But this thread is about frequenting a shop. And even HMV up here has a considrable, albeit DJ oriented, selection. -
I must admit there is something about record shops that you don't get with the internet. I'm too young to be rooting around through the LPs but one thing I like to do when I'm visiting london is to go to the music exchange store in Greenwich and search through their £1 CDs. Mostly pop and that but there have been some good finds there. I must have bought about 25 CDs from that place lol.
See, that's why I still pop into Fopp: it's browsing, browsing to music on the in-house, music that I have often found I needed to hear again, so i've gone and bought it. -

There were loads in Edinburgh and isn't Vinyl Villians still on the go down by Elm Row? Fopp are still in business but I mostly buy retro CDs and books when I'm in town. One of my faves, when I'm down there, is the vinyl stall at the market in Cambridge; last time I was there I picked up a copy of Bowie's 'Low' for buttons. And it looks like I'm heading back there at month end! -
Sure, maybe I should have asked him beforehand but I really did not see it being an issue, given that I had the same asked of me in the past. I still think the pickup is not the issue, though. Even though I can't prove it. Anyway, have sourced another s/h one and just need to get the correct rectifier I need and re-bias, case closed.
Didnt you say that he agreed to loose £40 so you could go and collect it? To me that sounds like he would have been loosing out. He shouldnt have messed you about after you both agreeed on something but you shouldnt have messed him about by bidding on a collection only item with no intention of collectiong it. I can understand him wanting to back out, i would have done the same. I dont blame him for thinking you were wasting his time.
Why would you do the same? Why? After he negged the courier pickup idea, it was HE who offered the £40 reduction to assist withe my fuel, an offer that I did not instigate! But let's look at it another way: at the end of the day, what difference is it to him whether it's I or a courier who stands at his door? Answer me that!
-
I'll say it again: I did agree to go collect. Anyway, spleen vented. Done and no money lost and have, in the interim, sourced another '59!!
-
Possibly, but why then knock £40 off the sale if I agreed to cancel? You might be right but I doubt it: he's either kept it or, more likely, got a better offer on an amp that's already thin on the ground on the s/h market. And, yes, thankfully no coin changed hands.
I do wish you'd stop swearing, whether it's abbreviated or not. Anyway... you have to realise that sometimes a courier just isn't convenient - collection during working hours, no evenings or weekends, some people aren't allowed to have things collected from work etc. If someone buys one of my items at collection only and then send a courier, I'm afraid I cancel and re-list instantly.
Swearing or not the courier thing is not the issue, though some of you seem to be latching onto it. I'm just really annoyed that the seller conned me, for that's what it seems. I had, if you'd read the post, stated that I was more than prepared to go down and collect it. It's just another ebay stiff-over and I'll get over it. Just wanted to lose some frustration in type.
If I was selling something as collection only on eBay and someone bid on it and then wanted a courier I'd be really annoyed and tell them where to go. The later stuff is annoying but it sounds like a bit of a mess all round.
Are you saying the guy did the right thing fkn me over cos I initially wanted to send a courier???
-
Typical eBay mess-up happened today. Am fkn furious and have got to vent my spleen! Some of you on here may also be guitarists so listen to this one. Surfing ebay yesterday, I began to think about the Fender Bassman. Always wanted one so went and had a look. There were two '59 Reissues and I found myself drawn to this one. Had the 5U4G rectifier and although it was 100v (step-down included) I quite fancied it. So, put in a bid and won it. Seller then asks when I'm picking it up. The auction did say collection only but when I offered courier pickup the fella wasn't happy. He then emails me, saying that there might be a solution to this and then asks me to call him, which I do. He tells me he has fallen out with his band and is giving it all up and selling the Bassman and his Gretsch, which was being picked up that day after being supposedly sold. He then says that he will cancel the auction and knock £40 off the price, which would help me with my fuel down from Scotland to Brum and back. I asked him if we had a Gentlemen's Agreement and he said 'yes' so we went ahead . He cancelled the deal (along with me) and then......... he just disappeared. I sent him a few texts/emails last night about it all but when I heard nothing back I presumed he was doing other stuff. This morning I texted him, stating that I was coming down on Monday and could he confirm. A few emails and texts later, there was still nothing back. Now, I knew he wasn't working so he must have been accessing mail so I began to wonder what was going on. I decided to leave it until early evening and then texted, emailed and phoned both his moby and land-line, leaving messages on the latter two. Still no repllies. Then, about an hour ago I get a text. He says he's changed his mind and has - suddenly, inside 24hrs - gotten a 'hot, new band' and is keeping all his kit!! I told him I thought he'd gotten a better offer elsewhere and why couldn't he just tell me the score, even if his story about keeping his gear was true! So, I missed out on the other Bassman as well. I'm fkn furious about this guy. I know some of you are gonna say that I should have refused his offer to cancel and should just have paid via bank transfer or paypal. But this carry-on has happened to me before, so neither of these payment methods would have guaranteed me the amp. I'm really angry and feel well and truly shafted. There, I feel a bit better after that!
Basses with the 1/4 inch gap between neck pickup and neck can suffer in exactly the same way as the originals could - the neck can delaminate.
I reckon you mean 1/2 inch spacing? I've seen Rick thru-necks shifting but was unaware that the pup spacing had anything to do with it.

The mini stack is 2 x 10s and a head. I think it's 65 watts. This is the model which one of the cabs has a sloping front. Home use only. The Blues Junior is the 2-tone sunburst cab one and is in good condition. Has one scratch on rear from previous owner and that's it. Sorry, no foot-pedal for the 'fat' circuit and no cover. Would prefer local pick-up in lothian area. Ashdown - £65 ovno Blues Junior - unsure but around £300.

Jazz Bass mute sets - anybody have one!?
Stacker replied to sockdeluxe_mikey's topic in Bass Guitars
USA ebay is the most popular place to get them. Fk knows why they're so expensive, given what they are. -
I still love Rotos. BUT.... they do go dead waaay too quick. I've never not had a replacement sent when Ive found a dud and I just wish their strings lasted long. Like a lot of guys on here, I have migrated to Warwick Reds. Failing that, D'Addario Pro Steels.
