There are some lovely used basses available for around £400.
I bought a Japanese Bacchus Craft Series jazz style bass on Basschat last year for £450.00 & it's up there with the very best basses I've owned.
I had a Sub Ray 4 for a while last year & I thought it was an excellent bass for the money.
I actually thought it was a better bass than the US Stingray 5 I had a few years ago.
The last couple of gigs I did before knocking the whole business on the head was with a CMD121P combo.
I was amazed how well it coped with a full band, no problems at all.
A couple of other people used it so I was able to hear how good it sounded out front too.
Excellent amp.
There are lots of really good videos on the Stewmac website, covering all manner of set-up, repair & finishing topics from beginner to advanced.

He should change his name to Ioan Llys.
Llys has a few different meanings in Welsh - one of them is "Hall" or "Court", another one just happens to be "Slime" or "Mucous"... 😶
I do it all myself, with the exception of fret work.
I've not had to touch the Bacchus bass I bought on here recently though, as it's the best set-up bass I've ever owned.
@Shepster8316 did a superb job on it.
When I took my stepson to see them a while ago the bassist was using Spectors.
I'm pretty sure he also had a Spector signature model at one point, so possibly a Spector...?
