When you lighten up with the plucking hand you can then lighten up with the fretting hand too - it takes less effort to hold down a string that's being softly plucked rather than being ripped off the bass. And once you get the hang of moderating your typical attack you can then vary your dynamics much more. Alex
Thanks On reflection I realise all this. Back in the 80s when I was playing all the time I had much better control than nowadays. The recent rehearsals have been my first playing bass in 20 years! When we started rehearsing in January, my fingers were as soft as a newborn's bum but now they are hard but blistered. Sunday was the longest session so far.
I thought it might be worth referring you to this thread I posted a while ago.
Great thread I might even try the glueing my fingers to the opposite forearm and ripping them off....maybe.....perhaps.......after a bottle of tequila maybe......
1. Four hours isn't (or certainly shouldn't be) an extended rehearsal.
We might book 4 or 5 hours studio time but our set is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes long. The last couple of rehearsals we have gone in, played the set end to end the once and then gone down the pub. Inside 2hours. On Sunday we started playing through the set for the 3rd time before we called it a night. In the average 4 hour rehearsal we'd be lucky to get 2hours actual playing coz of all the arsing around/smoke breaks etc On Sunday it was constant without a break!
Turning the amp does help in that you don't have to dig in so hard on the plucking hand..
everytime I turn it up a little the guitarist comes along and turns it down again!! LOL
Lighter strings (maybe flatwounds?), lower action. S.P.
Already running Elite Flats. The action is as low as it'll go without buzzing.
Turn your amp up, pluck less hard. Alex
and the fretting hand?
-
After a rather extended rehearsal on Sunday night ( a full 4 hours ) I am suffering. The callouses [sp?] on my fingertips have developed into full grown blisters! My ring finger and middle finger on my fretting hand My index, middle and ring finger on my plucking hand they're all blistered!! What do you do to prevent blistering? I've never been a fan of Elastoplast or the like as it reduces the feel - I need to feel the strings. So what do you do? Just to add - I don't slap. I pluck finger style. I no longer use a plectrum - it doesn't really suit - fingers is the only style that satisfies.
What we really want is a load of vintage Yank electricity. Where can we find that?
The best amps were Brit though so we need vintage Brit leccy....

didn't get a chance to get on the 'puter last night I'll post pics tonight

He's offered a £5 refund now which is fair I suppose.
It's all ridiculous trying to recapture the vintage sound... it doesn't matter how old the bass... Electricity feeding the amps has changed... amps just doesn't sound the same running off modern electricity ;)
What you need Sir is bank of super capacitors that were charged with genuine vintage electricity in the 50s and 60s. I think I might have some old lead acid batteries from my old Triumph that were last charged in the 60s - they too would contain original vintage electricity - unless of course it's all escaped by now.

free standing I'll post some pics tonight

I recently bought this using BIN http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250388702980 Given that listing, would you, or would you not expect the pedal to include the 9V DC external psu? I would and it didn't. I know we are all supposed to have umpteen suitable power supplies lying around but all mine are in use. I have e-mailed the seller asking where the psu is and have just been ignored so far. What should I do now?

I had a Sessionette 4x10 for years in the late 80s. I loved it! Mine was the cloth covered one and I really regret selling it. I paid £350 for mine new and sold it for the same amount.

I specify my required backline to the promoter and it magically appears on stage at the soundcheck. I actually don't own an amp.
I can't see Vintage Ben's original post now. Like I said before, I like the place (in London).
Me neither Obviously embarrassed and deleted it.
I'm still on 6. Had 5PE before that and when 6 came in with all the extra time stretching stuff it pretty much ticked the last remaining boxes I could have asked for. I hear the later versions have done a great job improving an already great user interface though.
The upgrade to 7PE is the best upgrade they've done. In 7 they've improved midi editing and now incorporate proper sidechain routing ( Hurrah!!! about time)...these 2 enhancements are worth the upgrade price alone. Do it - you won't regret it.

LE versions of most software comes with audio interfaces. You'll need a proper interface with decent ASIO/WDM driver support or you'll hit problems with the dreaded latency. I know Edirol comes with Sonar LE I run Sonar7 producer edition at home and it's dead simple.
For 6K a night i would just buy a bass out there. Each night ;-)
That's between 5 of us... Curious now might start a thread on how much bands charge - the forthcoming 3 gigs are being done for half that fee each.
-
it helps your welcome to borrow it for your trip (you are coming back aren't you ;-)
i am coming back yeah and then flying again 2 weeks later... Thanks for the offer but I wouldn't want to borrow it and then have it smashed or lost - I've got to sort my own solution. It looks like there are further Euro gigs in negotiation for later in the year - the fee is the only sticking point atm - holding out for minimum €6k a night .....maybe I can afford the fitted case.
The New SKB cases that come with the 2008 USA Fenders have these TSA locks on them. Twigman, let me konw if you want to borrow it as i dont use it.
Is that one of these: http://www.dv247.com/invt/42250/ if it is might you wish to sell it? I have a Mepal 5star hard case which I used to use back in the 80s to fly my bass around Europe - I'm a little concerned that it is not robust enough see attached pic Flying April 7th so got to sort something (at hopefully minimal £££ - I bought the Mrs a £15k kitchen last month) quick I am sorely tempted by this beauty: http://www.gothardflightcases.co.uk/10313/...ch=&sought=
