In my very unscientific experience I've found I like similar materials to the fret, brass nuts on fretted, and ebony or some other wood on fretless. It seems this gives a more even tone between open and fretted notes. Or at least it looks like it would. I've done a few aluminum nuts with good results. They sound like brass but with a lightly childish impudence above the 2k frequencies and a chocolaty low end filled with rainbows.
I bought the 100ml bottle from my local art shop for £3. Works well enough
That's encouraging, hopefully the difference in the expensive stuff will be noticeable.
I like the fact that they can turn an ordinary LED keyring torch in to "a special LED light charger". Must be something special ;-)
Yeah, the marketing is a bit thick Paying that much for a 2.5 inch piece of plastic is rough too. It seems a no brainer to use luminlay instead of white plastic though. If you're going to use plastic it might as well glow. The charger LED is a blue light and blue & UV are the frequencies that work best for charging. Apparently tungsten lights work very poorly, fluorescents & black lights work much better. They should have mentioned the tone improvements their LED makes.

I almost bought some Luminlay sticks but did a bit of googling first and ended up buying some paint http://www.glowstop.com/products/others/gt3gp.html And some raw pigments, here's the 2 brightest ones http://www.glowstop.com/products/pigments/gt8900.html http://www.glowstop.com/products/pigments/gtb8900.html I bought the blue one. I'm thinking I may be able to fill a dot hole with pigments and crazy glue, if that doesn't work well I'll try the paint. Both will be tested on a piece of scrap first of course If they will charge enough under stage lights to get me through moments of darkness I'll call it a success. I don't need the searchlight levels of an LED, just a little glow that will tell me where the dots are on those rare occasions that I need them. I'll post some pics as I go.

Has anybody tried the Green Pedulla at Mansons?
Vibrating G String replied to BigJim's topic in Bass Guitars
I've always liked pedullas and this seems like a cracking price, I've seen over a while that it keeps coming and going. Any input?
Just guessing, that color isn't too popular (I love it though) and the nut is 1.9 inches which may be wider than most want. Personally I've never seen a Pedulla with a defect and find the quality to be top notch. -
Well, all my instruments have tonal chambers inside their body. This means the body is somehow hollow in certain areas. Those chambers are quite big, not just small zones, hence the use of "deep tonal chambers". Feel free to ask if you need more infos.
Since you asked. What the difference between chambers and tonal chambers?

That doesn't have to be seen as a slur but it's a jazz bass. It looks and sounds like one. Very pretty jazz bass

That luminlay looks worth trying. It would be perfect if it would somewhat charge on it's own from normal stage lights and provide enough glow for when the lights are temporarily dark. I think I'll give this a try too
Real LED's look about as cool as those huge plastic body kits certain people put on their rusty old bangers. Stick on LED's look even worse!
I think you're looking for talkbass and not basschat I don't have them to look cool I have them because I gig in the dark. I'm not much of a finger watcher but when I want to see a dot I want to see a dot.

Looking back at the cheap one from fretlord I was thinking that might work well if a tiny slot was cut into the side of the fretboard and it was inlaid like purfling. If it was done right where the fretboard meets the neck it would solve 2 issues with the FretFX version, the ridge on the neck & obscuring the old dots.
-
Well my fretfx got here. Over all I think they're great but you should be aware of a few things before diving in. It cost me about $80 shipped in the US. Install is not hard but requires some finesse. I really like that they're not too bright, I don't need lasers in my eyes. The bad, there is a ridge on the side of the fingerboard, not too bad but if this kind of thing bugs you you won't like it. They also cover the old dots so when they are off they are much worse than plain dots. Once installed you're advised to never pick up the guitar by the neck and never let a stand touch any part of it. So they're a bit fragile. Other than that they're great, supposed to get around 30 hours on a battery, the whole thing is very light weight too. as fast with a pick as with fingers?
Vibrating G String replied to norvegicusbass's topic in General Discussion
Can anyone play really quick octaves with a pick?
Do it like a country Tele player and pick the low note and grab the octave with a finger. I've seen that work well for a few players. -
Taper core strings like Labella Supersteps sit lower in a saddle and can lower your action by about a third of the string diameter. Routing a hole for the bridge has been done a lot. The first Spectors did this with the badass bridges. Also any machinist who knows how to deck a block or mill a set of heads could take a slice off the bottom of a bridge over lunchtime, if you happen to have access to those skills and the right kind of bridge. A bit crazy but it would work
Because they are designed to give the best performance when powered by a 9volts preamp circuit, without it they sound like poo, bland and unpowered. Try and see.
No they're not and no they don't. And I've bought them by the boxload from Pat Bartolini directly over the last few decades. I have been using them in basses since the 1980's and currently have them in 6 basses. They are just fine passive.

I love the fish Rybski's are great basses, tone in the Wal/Smith range, very funky and very well made. Some are quite heavy though. I haven't heard the name since last century though, didn't know he still made them.
-
If you want Bartolini's you're going to have to spend on a preamp too, why don't you get some Wizards, Frailin or even Lollars instead.
Why would you need a preamp with Barts?

Buying a bass specifically to modify
Vibrating G String replied to ThomBassmonkey's topic in Bass Guitars
Anyone got any experience with the Delano MM pups?
They're very trendy, which means you'll have to change them in a few years. Currently I prefer the stock OLP pickup I have to the EBMM I have in my SUB. I've had a number of Bart MM's which were great but lacked some of the glassy highs that scores the bedroom sales. Great for a band player. I've also enjoyed the Seymour Duncans I've used very much. What is it you want from Delano? -

Doesn't the SUB use the exact same neck as the more expensive MM's? If you're buying it to mess with I'd save the money and get a SBMM over a SUB. -
cheapest bass in most expensive situation
My kid brother owns a Harley shop in Chepstow and tells me that the motorcycle world is very similar. Most of the people who can afford an 'off the peg' Harley are middle aged 'mid-life crisis' cases who are attracted to the glamour of the brand. Is it the same for top end basses?
I think so. And Les Claypool with the Whamola for the win in cheapest bass, biggest crowd. Not counting washtub players Thought he Whamola is still probably cheaper than a good washtub. -

Abe Laboriel has a super cheap Goya fretless that's seen tons of gigs and recordings. On guitar Jimmy Page used some cheap Sears catalog stuff. -
I was wondering what the cheapest bass we could confirm was, being used in an expensive situation I mean, in a famous band or a backing band playing in a venue that seats 10s of 1000s etc
When you consider the whole point of Fender was to make cheap disposable substitutes for real instruments like acoustic basses the field really opens up. Didn't Jaco pay something like $90 for one of his? -
