I think nowadays for weekend warriors such as me (and I guess many others here) gear only matters up to a point. As has already been said, years ago cheap basses were almost unplayable whereas nowadays there are plenty of budget brands that play and sound great. Same with amps/cabs. I think that provided you've met the basics i.e. it's loud enough for what you're doing and has at least the useful bells and whistles that you particularly need, there's not a lot in it. I remember playing through some old buzzing kit that sounded like you'd stacked a pile of duvets in front of the cab. Today there's a vast array of 'cheap' kit that does the job perfectly well. Let's admit it, the average crowd down the Dog & Duck on a Saturday night don't care whether you're playing through a £2k Aguilar rig or an old combo. I'm one of the worst for chopping and changing gear as I'm now in a position where I can, but does it make me sound or play any better? Not really. Throughout the 90's I played lots of gigs and the vast majority were played using an Encore P through a Peavey 160TNT combo. I did on occasion buy other kit such as a Mk1 Wal Custom (for £565 in 1993) but I didn't have it long as I was skint plus I was the first to admit that it was completely wasted on me. The Basschat marketplace does have a lot to answer for. In the past I didn't even have a spare bass! However I do like the fact that on here we have the opportunity to try a whole new range of different kit, then if we fancy something else we can move it on to the next guy/gal for the same price you paid for it. I've been in the fortunate position to try lots of kit that I would never have had the opportunity to try, many items that I lusted after years ago when I wasn't able to buy them. My wife has a theory that there is just a finite amount of kit floating around Basschat that we all keep moving around between each other! One thing I do know is that if I spent as much time practicing as I spend on BC, I'd be a hell of a better player than I am. But back to the OP. In my book if your kit is reliable, playable and loud enough for the job, it's good enough.

That’s the tricky part 😟

Dave Ball amp repair at Carlton. I took a couple of my old Trace heads to him and was very happy with the work he did.
-
Trace rack ears are mythical things, I've never seen any available, anywhere. However, if you buy a pair of 'long' generic ears off a well known auction site you can re-drill the 3 side holes and (with the help of a 5mm packer each side between the ears and the head) pretty much get away with it as shown on my SMX below EDIT - Just to clarify I know that proper Trace Rack ears do exist, it’s just that they’re usually already attached to an amp/pre so finding someone willing to part with a pair is extremely rare.

I've done that too! Thought what a great sound then realised that everything was left 'out' Oh well, a great sound is a great sound, no matter how you get to it.

Genzler Magellan 800 - £585 shipped Unfortunately I won’t be gigging anytime in the near future so I’m downsizing my kit. First up is my Genzler Magellan 800. There’s lots of info about these online and on these hallowed pages. A very versatile amp but unfortunately now surplus to my needs. OVERVIEW / SPECIFICATIONS: PREAMP – dual channel, all solid state analog design with integrated soft clip circuitry. INPUT– 1Meg ohm input impedance INPUT PAD SWITCH – attenuation of -8.5dB CLEAN CHANNEL OVERVIEW – Voiced to provide natural, pristine, transparent reproduction of the bass instrument. DRIVE CHANNEL OVERVIEW – Voiced to provide a more “driven” tonal signature and harmonic content along with a softer top end and more relaxed low frequency response. CONTOUR — continuously variable control of 2 vastly different response curves. In either CURVE position, when the SHAPE control is all the way off (CCW) the response curve is completely FLAT. Curve A (Blue) — a variable pre-shaped curve that boosts lows and highs while simultaneously cutting mids. The slopes are fairly gentle which keep the tone shaping very musical. This curve covers a wide range of sounds from flat to classic to modern depending on the position of the SHAPE control. Curve B (Amber) — a variable pre-shaped curve with attenuated high mids and highs, a low mid bump, and a slight roll-off of the lowest bass frequencies. Again, the slopes are fairly gentle which keep the tone shaping very musical. This curve is intended to provide sounds in the range of vintage amps and vintage cabinets that do not have tweeters. ACTIVE EQUALIZATION – The MAGELLAN™ 800 contains an active 3 band equalizer with a sweepable parametric mid-range frequency control. Bass +/- 15dB boost/cut shelving curve with a corner frequency of 75Hz Mid +/- 15dB boost/cut of the variable mid frequency selected Freq Variable mid frequency from 150Hz-3kHz Treble +/- 15dB boost/cut shelving curve with a corner frequency of 6kHz POWER AMP – The MAGELLAN™ 800 uses a state of the art, class D power amplifier design and a high frequency auto-sensing universal switch-mode power supply (SMPS) to achieve unprecedented high performance and lightweight packaging. There are no Voltage Switches to change or jumpers to move. This SMPS senses the line voltage from 100-240 Volts and automatically configures itself. REAR PANEL XLR Direct Output Mic / Line Switch Pre / Post EQ Switch Ground Lift Switch Effects Loop Aux Input Tuner Output Head Phones Foot Switch — Channel switching (Foot switch not included) Dual Speakon® Speaker Outputs SPECIFICATIONS Power Output: 400W/8 Ohms, 800W/4 Ohms and 800W/2.67 Ohms Minimum Speaker Load: 2.67 Ohms Operating Power condition: 100 – 240V, 50/60 Hz Dimensions: 3”H X 11.25”W X 10.5”D (76.2mm H x 285.75mm W x 266.7mm D) Weight: 6.25 LBS (2.83Kg) This head is in excellent condition save for a tiny amount of black paint missing from the marker line on the Master Volume knob. Comes complete with the correct and brand new Genzler carry bag which has been used twice. Sale Only - No trades thanks Price includes shipping to UK buyers only or you’re quite welcome to collect from South Yorkshire for £570. I’m currently unavailable for meet ups I’m afraid.

Nice bass but the ad seems a little 'brief'. More detail would perhaps help your sale What year is it from (pre-2005 judging by the nut)? Key features - ebony board I believe? Is there any damage or any other faults of note? Does it have a case? Do you have any more detailed/up-to date photographs (I only ask as some of these photos appear to be the same ones used on a for sale thread on TalkBass from 2006)?

I had/used a black and red version briefly in the early ‘90’s. Built superbly with very powerful pickups as I recall.

Sold a bass to Mart (surprisingly our first transaction given that we are pretty local to each other). First class communication throughout and on collection we had a great hour or so talking about all things bass. A real pleasure. Until the next time, all the best and many thanks

How does neck thickness and shape affect feel and playability?
Deedee replied to Greg.Bassman's topic in Bass Guitars
Exactly this for me. I used to avoid narrower nut widths but I’m loving my EBMM Sterlings after years of playing mainly Stingray/Precision width necks. However, a narrow spacing at the bridge and I’m knackered. -
It's NOT EVEN been nine whole days since I bought any bass gear...

In my defence, time really does fly. I swore blind that it was the beginning of 2017 I bought that one. Alas, checking my messages confirmed otherwise 😂 -

Shockingly, I’ve just worked out that I can beat that. 8 basses with the longest resident in chez DeeDee being my Aria SB R80 purchased at the beginning of this year 😮 I’ll just go and stand on the naughty step 😔 -

Mine is certainly lighter than any Stingray I’ve had previously and it’s also far lighter than each of my Sterlings.
