1. Incredibly sharp bass! I don't think we can get those over here.
 2.
Thanks for replies everyone. Seems I asked the right place. @ Bilbo. I interpreted your reply as most blues being played in a Myxolydian (Dominant?) scale, therefore if I was to jam to a blues tune in A, then I should/could be playing an A Myxolydian scale over the whole thing? (A, D, E) Forgive my ignorance, I forgot to mention I was an idiot in my initial post, lol. As to other members recommending a teacher, I think you are right. I have a thousand questions and this post could get quite long.. If there are any extremely patient teachers in the North East (Northumberland) area, please contact me if you think you can help.
Good luck!
 3. Many others will give you much better (and specific) advice than I could. But from what you've said, especially the first part, it sounds like you are ripe for a teacher. A teacher will be able to start you using scales and modes in tunes and playing over chords, etc. The video advice sounds a bit strange to me, though.
 4.
Certain high-profile players get mentioned a fair deal on BC. Certain famous players get mentioned a lot, too Certain Very talented players are discussed frequently, and rightly so. This thread is for none of the above. Without searching, I can recall little or no mention of; Andrew Weiss (Ex-Rollins Band) DD Verni (Still going strong with Overkill) Greg Christian (Testament) The Eerie Von (Danzig) Please add your own unmentioned players...
Peter Cetera, esp. on the first Chicago LP.
 5.
Hi My 12 year old plays bass and we were given/lent a bass, Crest Columbus. It is a bit rubbish, some of the pots dont work and it is very buzzy. My more knowledgable friend (mind he does play lead guitar) said it would cost more to fix than its worth, so I have been wondering what we could replace it with from the for sale section. My son is at grade 5 on the classical guitar and does a band workshop once a week so he isnt an absolute beginner. his current bass came with a Rocket 20B bass practice amp which has also seen better days. Any suggestions what we should go for? I guess it also needs to look the part! I was hoping to get away with spending under £200!
Squier makes the Bronco Bass, a short-scale, medium-weight, very inexpensive bass ($150 in the US). I had one and liked it quite a lot. The short scale might appeal to a player with smaller hands, or to a beginner. tg
 6. PlayJazzNow.com has tracks with piano, drums and bass, and tracks with just piano and drums. Mostly jazz, of course, but also some funk, sets (all keys) of major and minor blues, and Latin stuff. The downloads cost, but are relatively cheap. Great for practice, I find. For example, the minor blues set is in all keys, each tune lasting about five minutes, so plenty of repetition. There are also sets for specific moves, such as ii-V-I or some other jazz movement. tg
 7.
Hey Ted, I'm doing a single coil P at the mo. Wiring diagrams for all are on the Seymour Duncan site. This is the one for the SJB: http://www.seymourdu.../501030-105.pdf
Thanks, Jon, this is great!
 8.
Normal passive Jazz pups? How many wires? two or three?
Yes, passive pickups. I don't know how many wires. What I have in mind to buy are Basslines SJB-2 pickups.
 9. Does any BCer know of a good step-by-step instructional video or set of instructions for replacing jazz bass pickups? I searched the site, hoping to find instruction on a par with the excellent How to Shim a Neck tutorial, but no luck; but of course I could have overlooked it (and the Wiki is apparently not in service). Thanks. Ted
 10.
Yep. A P or Jazz body, with one P pickup is good enough for me. I realise some people want something different, im not knocking that, but you can have pretty much anything you want already, yet still most people go for the tried and tested. I do agree, its more about economics rather than innovation but im guessing Fender haven't stayed in the business this long without knowing what they are doing, or doing market research to find out what people want. Could be wrong of course.
I think they discovered that people want Squiers, so ... I'm betting these new models are no better (or worse) than Squiers--and I love mine--but there will be 'Fender' on the headstock, which in itself is a draw.
 11.
"going forward" or any other kind of corporate w@nk speak of a similar ilk.
AUGHHHHHHHHHHH!!
 12.
There's little we can do about that I'm afraid - it's just aggressive advertising by Google using your browser.
I didn't think it was a BC issue .. but isn't it nice to be 'helped' by Google!
 13. Playing with our trio (violin, keyboard, bass) and doing 'Footprints' at a gig for Episcopal clergypersons (that may be clergyhumans): a very brisk version, completely tight, locked in with what the piano player is doing, and with the violin soaring over it. Priceless.
 14. Apa, It is damned annoying, I've also noticed it. But it happens on other sites as well; I don't know why some sites and not others. TG
 15. Thanks for the help. To be clear, as I said originally, it was playing the guitar that got me into trouble, not playing the bass; I know how to hold the bass. I think when i get over this I'll just stay away from the guitar! TG
 16.
Best to order it direct from Stuarts website: http://www.basslinepublishing.com/
Thanks, Rhys.
 17. I've been playing and practicing quite a bit lately, and also had to play guitar at two gigs this past week. Somehow, gripping the guitar, and especially making barre chords, sprained my thumb: the ball of my left thumb is quite sensitive, and I feel a stabbing pain if I stress it at all. Even buttoning my shirt too forcefully sends a sharp pain through the ball of the thumb. I can still play the bass, but it's touch and go. And I'm left-handed! Any advice? Any medics out there? This has never happened to me before, and I've got plenty of gigs coming up. Thanks.
 18.
If you want a good book for scales, look no further than Stuart Clayton's "Bass Players Guide to Scales ans Modes". I got this book a few weeks ago and it really has opened up the fingerboard for me. Best bass book I've bought in years. Cheers, louisthebass
I just tried to find it and found only the e-book version, not the paperback, which was listed 'limited availability.' I'm thinking AmazonUS doesn't have the book ... damn.
 19. I'd played guitar medium-well for many years, but when I became interested in jazz I wanted to get the guys I play with interested in it too--and they went right for it. But I couldn't do a thing with jazz on the guitar, so I went to the bass and started learning from one of my bandmates who plays three or four instruments; later I started lessons, got the Real Book, some Aebersold materials, etc. The main attraction for me is harmonizing; and I can still hear the harmony a lot better than I can play it. My ambition is to become a better-than-medium-well bassist.
 20. Peter Frampton, 'Show Me the Way,' from Frampton Comes Alive.
 21.
I've owned my US standard Fender Jazz from new since 1997, and for many years it was my go-to bass (or sometimes my only bass!). We've done lots and lots of very varied gigs and projects together, but unfortunately for quite a while now, I seem to have fallen out of love with it. There's nothing wrong with it, and it sounds great, but it just doesn't feel natural or comfortable in my hands anymore. The purchase of my Sandberg earlier this year has further compounded this because it is effortless to play and is, for me, the most comfortable neck on anything I've ever played. I'm pretty experienced at doing set-ups, and when I took it to my local luthier recently, he confirmed that there's nothing wrong with the neck and couldn't really improve much on the way i'd set it up. So, here's my dilemma: Do I; A) Keep it for sentimental reasons, even though I probably won't really use it. Sell it and buy something else that I'll get plenty of use out of (possibly a Lakland Skyline 44-01 or save a bit more and get a Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor). As you may have guessed, I'm useless at making decisions! Help me please!
Keep it. I sold my Fender (Japan) P-bass and have regretted it ever since. Happy with my current bass, but still.
 22.
If you practice you'll be better than if you didn't practice but that's about it.
+1
 23.
I use an 8b which has 8 speakers in it and if I play where other bass players are, they invariably come and comment they cant beleive the sound that comes out of such tiny speakers. As someone who has used mainly 15s in the past its a revalation to me as well. I cant explain the maths. It has good projection, and I beleive its something to do with using multiple speakers. Before this I had for smaller gigs an ashdown mini 4x8 which is also remakble pokey, probably much louder, but without the range the pjb stuff has. Have a look at some of the reviews on the web site under the neo speakers range, and you will see the claimed specifications The stuff is very well engineered and designed, and does work. He is growing the range, and has gone from the very small, to http://www.philjonespuresound.com/products/?id=99 My goal was to reduce weight and get a portable rig, and leave my monster 2x15 at home for all but a few gigs. I could have probably achieved the same goal by going with a 2x12 or a BFM set up.
Thanks for this information. I will plug into a PJB when I can find one; trouble is, getting to one! Not many PJB dealers in this neck of the woods. TG
 24.
Its hardly surprising, the super flight case has 4 forward facing speakers and two facing upwards for monitoring. IIRC Phil Jones says 8 5 in speakers is roughly equivalent to a 2x10 so what you heard was an outdoor gig using the equivalent 1x10 If I were playing an outdoor gig, I would probably not use my 8b, but something more powerfull. As a pjb user of about 6 months, they are great amps, but they dont work miracles. My 8b is remarkably good for its size and weight, but like everything its a compromise between size weight and volume. If you heard one of the larger pirana rigs with 25 odd speakers, it would have blown your ears off
This is interesting, thanks. What I really don't understand is how a five-inch speaker -- or an array of them -- can handle the extremely low vibrations of a bass. It seems like clipping would be inevitable at a certain point, when volume demands pushed the speaker to its physical limits. TG
