3. It's the seller's responsibility to get the goods delivered. If the seller doesn't want to do that then he or she needs to say 'pick up or meet only'.
 4.
I do like a happy ending ...
You do know that will be extra Jack?
 5.
... singers get more slack when it comes to practice/rehearsal ...
Why should a singer have any more slack than anyone else?
 6.
Could we have a Latin workshop please?
I've just about exhausted my repertoire. The same goes for my bass playing.
 7.
I clearly can't remember my old grammar school days, which means I'd be left out of the door if the bash only admitted those familiar with Latin
I've forgotten more than I remember. At least I think I have.
 8. Tort ought to be brown tort not red tort, IMHO.
 9.
Hopefully we don't need to understand Latin to attend either
No, you don't even need to understand how to play bass.
 10.
I imagined they didn't mean to follow the Latin 5th declension (bo-ring!), but Stati would look a little less odd. Come to think of it, that's probably why they chose the weird version! We all noticed it now
Sorry, but it's fourth declension not fifth. Fifth declension are e-stems.
 11.
Out of curiosity, why do people refer to the plural of Status basses as Statii, when it should actually be Stati?
I've always wondered where the double i came from too. Especially given that the Latin singular status has the Latin plural status as it is a u-stem not an o-stem. Meanwhile, the English plural of status is statuses. Of course, the owners of Statuses can call their basses whatever they like.
 12.
The MIJ Precision I bought recently came with flats (Rotosound Jazz Bass 45-105) on it & I was surprised just how trebly they were after hearing all the talk about flats being "woolly" & "dead" sounding. I really like them actually - love the sound & the feel of them & especially like the tension (I Don't like floppy, bendy strings). I wouldn't use flats on my Spector but I think they work really well on the Fender. They're making me play differently too, which I'm really enjoying.
Rotosound Jazz Bass flats are among the highest tension and most bright sounding of flats. I can't say I like them myself.
 13.
Can I ask a stupid question re tension? Does tension largely affect playability or are there major sound differences too? It's been said above that the TI flats are low tension and possibly looser to play. Does that add clank or excessive noise to the sound? I forked out for La Bella flats and had to change them after a few days due to what I found to be excessive tension. I thought a dogdy neck might be the problem, but they weren't a whole lot better on a perfect neck either.
Well, there's a large element of personal preference in it. Some people rather like the higher tension of La Bella flats (although they are not particularly high tension). Other people like the lower tension of TIs. Either way you can change the feel of the string under your fingers (that's compliance by the way not tension, the tension does not change) by where you play with your right hand - over the end of the fingerboard for more compliance or over the pickup or close to the bridge for less compliance. The tension however stays the same as long as the string is tuned to the same pitch. Lower tension does not cause clank unless your bass is not set up properly and/or you are digging in too much. Different strings have different tones - at least in a loose sense - but there is no direct link between tension and tone.
 14.
I've been tempted to try flats for a while now, especially now I have a 2nd and third bass. I've got an Ibanez Roadstar II (similiar shape to a modern Ibanez SR300) which puts out slightly too much treble even with tone rolled off, so thinking a set of flats might sweeten the deal a little bit. Ive seen the fender flats cheap, but I've read that they have a fairly high tension? I have this bass strung 45 - 105 with a low action, but I understand same guage flats have a higher tension and can be harder to play at first.
Gauge alone is no guarantor of tension one way or another.
 15. Yep, you don't have to use flats and if you do use flats there are wide variations between them - just like rounds.
 16.
Really?!

On the recording of My Generation: “I bought this Danelectro bass and it had these tiny, thin wirewound strings on. They were so thin, they sounded just like a piano, an unbelievably clear sound. The only thing was that you couldn’t buy these strings. When we recorded ‘My Generation’ I ended up with three of these Danelectros just for the strings. The last one I had, the string busted before we actually got into the studio to re-record it, so I did it on a Fender Jazz in the end with tape-wound La Bella strings.” “I played that solo on a Jazz bass with tapewound strings through a Marshall 50 watt and 4x12. Interestingly, the bass solos on the earlier takes were much more complicated, and played on a Danelectro which had a much more piano-like sound. It was a medium scale bass with a two-octave neck. The trouble was that the strings were so thin that I kept breaking them. We’d record during the day and, to finance the sessions, we were playing gigs nearly every night, and inevitably I’d break a string. None of the music shops had any replacement strings and no string manufacturers made replacement strings thin enough for Dano basses then, so I had to go down to Marshall’s and buy a new Dano for £60. I ended up with three new Danelectros, all with busted strings! In the end I busted my last string at the third attempt and there weren’t any more in the country. I thought, ‘f*** it’, and went and bought myself a Fender Jazz bass and a set of La Bella strings, and played the solo with that. But it was a different sound and a simplified, slowed-down version of the solos on previous takes.” http://www.thewho.ne...s/bass6066.html
By 'wirewound' he means roundwound and by 'tapewound' he means flatwound.

 18.
If everyone does their homework away from band , or individuals get together to work out parts or harmonies, then the full band is not that regular, that could still be more effective than a band who does weekly session where no one comes prepared or organsied. There are no rules, just goals. Having said that, even I'd it worked, would he be free to gig ?
I wouldn't disagree with this but the singer still needs to rehearse like everyone else.
 19.
I know where you guys are coming from - I've now got D'Addario Chromes on my Jazz - excellent - and a set of Fender flatwound on a fretless Peavey Foundation. By way of a slightly different question - I know you're talking about flatwounds here, but the subject of string tension has come up - what brand would you say has the lowest tension roundwound strings? I've got my P bass with Rotosound on 45/105 s fitted & they really do seem tight/hard to play. Chers.
I haven't used rounds for many years so I'm not a good source - however, I did try some TI Jazz Rounds (43-51-68-89) a few years back and, like the TI flats, they were very low tension.
 20.
I really really want one of these, £273 is disgustingly cheap. Can't wait to see some reviews on youtube, and actually try one out... just think, they'll be selling for £150-200 second hand in a year or so
There are two Youtube demos linked in this thread. If these only get made for a short time - as has happened before - then they'll be fetching more than £200 in a year or so but I hope you are correct.
 21. I'd say if he can't rehearse then he shouldn't have been auditioned. But only you know how your band works.
 22.
+1 to a certain extent. I put a new set of La Bella 760FLs on the other week and had to turn the treble down on the amp - when the neck pickup was solo'ed it sounded like JJ Burnel!
Entwistle on My Generation is playing a Jazz bass with flatwounds.
 23.
... and whatever Entwistle used on 'My Generation'.

That was a Fender Jazz - with flatwounds on!!! Read it in an old interview in Bassist mag many moons ago. (or it might have been Beat Instrumental).

On the recording of My Generation: “I bought this Danelectro bass and it had these tiny, thin wirewound strings on. 24.
be careful if you are tempted to go for the black nylon wound flatwounds as they are usually a very heavy guage (but also low tension and very pliable) because of the significant increase in diameter you might need to cut the fret slots wider to accomodate the guage whereas if you go for steel or ncikel or such then you would probs stick with something liek a 40-100 or 45-105 set iirc from memory rotosound trubass come in at about 65-135 ish
Rotosound Trubass are 65-115 - their B string is 135
 25.
Flatwounds will always sound "woolly and dead" that's really the point of them. You will never get that crisp clear sound you get from roundwounds. Some roundwound sets have a coating on them which is supposed to make them last longer. Never tried them so I don't know. Half/ground/pressure wound strings give a kind of halfway house between rounds and flats. Smooth to the touch as on flats and a little of the brightness of rounds. Then there's Thomastik Jazz Flats. I love them. Smooth to the touch, a bit of brightness and lighter tension. Yum. And they last forever.
I completely disagree with the claim that flats will always sound 'wooly and dead'.
