1. That's beautiful. Same goes for almost any Stingray, but that's a particularly good specimen! It looks great with black or white pickguard (not sure about the clear one). If I were pushed, I'd say white, but if I had the option I'd still swap them every so often for the sake of it!
2. I'm in my last year at uni, but if I got that call after the second week of June I'd say yes without a moment's hesitation!
3. That's one delicious rig. Unsurprisingly I now have a craving for some chocolate too. Mmm, I think there's some brownies downstairs... *drools*
4. Oh, Jeff Beck of course! His current band is solid.
5. Would Wayne Krantz count? Some good grooves in his tunes.
6.
I've ordered off them three times and ended up cancelling every order.
+1 although only the one time, as it was impossible to send the item to any address other than the billing address. Ridiculous!
7. The scratchplate really adds another dimension to it - very nice shape. Can't wait to see the finished product!
8. I'm currently back home from uni for a week, and as there's a camera lying around I thought I should take some photos of the bass I brought back with me. I'm not much of a photographer, mind... Part one: Schecter, au naturelle Here's the rest of them.
9. Just giving this thread a shameless little bump to say I've just uploaded another track - 'Twentyfive'. Mmm, I just love the way myspace destroys audio quality.
10.
Play it a little higher, no-one will know.
+1 Maybe use an octaver?
11. Sorry for the new topic - I know there's the recommended luthiers topic pinned at the top of this forum, but I need a fairly quick reply. Hope I'm not being too cheeky in doing this! I really need to sort out some bad fret buzz and dead spots on my Stingray, and I know no-one has mentioned any recommended places in West Yorkshire at all. Surely it can't be that bad! So... can anyone help me out? Any personal recommendations for a set-up in Leeds or the surrounding area? Cheers Huw
12.
As for the Vegi's not liking it - I said in an earlier post that it was being trimmed in leather. But, today found that its actually fake leather stuff. So its all good.
Hah, I read that you were trimming it in leather, but being the hypocrite that I am didn't even notice that would be why it would've been unsuitable for vegetarians. I'm not even a proper vegetarian. Apparently I'm a pescetarian (spelling?), which means I make an illogical exception for eating fish and seafood. Or, to make a bad joke out of it, I'm a fish-and-chipocrite. (Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week.) Anyway, back on topic - that cream leather, vegetarian or otherwise, looks beautiful!
13. Student loan installment, where are you when I need you?! I'm also waiting on payment from a few gigs... if I had them I'd snap this right up. Arrrrrrg.
14. Thanks for the feedback Paul. I'm especially glad you enjoyed 'I can't feel my face'. It took me ages to finish that track (I came up with the initial ideas a year-and-a-half ago and I finished it about a week ago), but I think I've got it just about how I want it. Incidentally, the title came about when I was walking to college during the particularly freezing winter this year. It was so cold my face felt numb, hence that phrase. Somehow it really suits the track, although if you remove the context it sounds a bit sinister. But I like that. I've just been listening to it again... I can never get the drums right first time round, they're always way too high in the mix! I'll be checking out John M. Keane as well, since you mentioned a similarity. Ta Huw
15. A bit late, but cheers for the help with this issue - I got a super long scale set and the B sounds sweeeeet. I was trying some drop A tuning the other day, it sounded disgusting. In a good way.
16. Hey all, another myspace page for you to look at: myspace.com/whobert It's some electronic stuff I come up with every once in a while, mostly using Logic and a bit of Ableton Live (think Four Tet, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, UNKLE, The Cinematic Orchestra). The three tracks currently on the player have all been submitted as coursework for college assignments. Convenient. So... I haven't actually played any live bass on these tracks (I've got a few in the pipeline that will possibly require it though). You could always give me some feedback about the compositional and production elements (to name but a few) or something. Oh yeah, the first track is currently a rough mix. Also, the myspace player destroyed the quality when encoding it. So bear that in mind. Ta Huw
17.
I don't give a toss what other players use though. They could hit the strings with sardines for all I care.
I think I know what to do in my final recital now.
18. I'm not entirely sure if this warrants a new topic, but I'll go ahead anyway. Not so long ago I acquired a Schecter Stiletto Custom 5, which is a 5 string as the name suggests. I bought a set of long scale d'Addario Pro Steels to replace what I assume were the stock strings (I bought it nearly new off eBay). Now here's the problem - the B string, and to a lesser extent the E string doesn't quite reach over the nut before the thicker wrap of the string ends... It's still playable, but there's a hint of rattle when it's played open. This has led me to believe that I need a super long scale set, or at least the lower strings. However, according to d'Addario, this current set should be fine. The tech specs for this bass claim the scale length to be 35". Long scale d'Addarios apparently account for 34"-36". Can anyone help me out? Will I have to fork out that little extra for super long scale strings (perhaps the bass is slightly longer scale than listed), or is the problem due to a slight lack in quality control at d'Addario? Ta Huw
19. ( Wow, I didn't know I sounded like suck a pillock!)
20.
Stuart Zender
I quite enjoy Zender's playing, but I hate his tone at times. His legion of fanboys (mostly posting on youtube videos it seems) also annoy me to no end - they treat him like some sort of deity, and make every effort to undermine the accomplished players who have replaced him in Jamiroquai. The phrase 'get over it' springs to mind. Well, I'm going to say something downright blasphemous - Paul Turner is far and away my favourite Jamiroquai bassist for his impeccable groove and tasteful playing. Yes, Zender was great in that band, but you must admit the current incarnation are tight as hell, and no doubt plenty of that is to do with Paul. Actually, can he do no wrong? I'd say so!
21. I've only discovered his channel recently, but his videos seem to be very informative. I don't mind the face pulling - at the least it's a visual element for entertainment's sake. He appears to be passionate about music and bass playing anyway. I was particularly impressed with his performance of a live Earth, Wind & Fire track I saw today. So yeah, in summary... I rate him.
22. Dreaming in Metaphors by Seal has an awesome 7/8 groove. There's some ridiculous modulation going on in some of the tracks off Letter From Home by the Pat Metheny Group.
23. I've been having fun with flat tuning at the moment, but I've not tried BEAD. I have quite small hands, but the string spacing on my 5 is actually quite comfortable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tim Commerford use BEAD for some of the Audioslave stuff? I'm pretty sure some of the tracks on the first album (Cochise and Show Me How to Live spring to mind) include a low B without the use of a 5 string or a whammy pedal.
