STOLEN - Wakefield area - 57RI P bass - FOUND!! :-)
hubrad replied to hubrad's topic in General Discussion
Glad to say the bass turned up.. apparently it was 'found in the park'. Relief all round! Thanks for the extra publicity, bluejay. :-) -
No way I would be ALLOWED to do NYE for less than £200. If I am asked I tell them to ask their wife if she would 'release' them on that evening, off all evenings, for just £40 and beer.
Basically this.. Music is officially part of my living, so a paying gig is good, but NYE has to be a good payer or I'll be spending time with the wife. If any bands I play with don't get that, it's their night out!

Reminds me of an incident on tour when the drummer totally fried his brand new cd Walkman (4.5V) by plugging in the bass player's laptop power supply (19V).. there was smoke! :-D
Pub gaffers know you have to drive, free beer is a con they're using more and more. One trick at a so called charity event was to give each band member 6 beer tokens half and hour before we went on. As we were on last but one they weren't much use realy. But a punter who was with a crowd of about ten people had bought me a pint earlier, so I collected the 20 tokens we had left, gave them all to him as I left and said fill yer boots mate. Gaffer wasnt happy about that apparently.
Excellent! :-)

Update.. the bass is now back with its owner! :-) It was 'found in the park', and the story appears to be legit. Big relief all round. I can't find an edit button for the title! -

Thanks, Bluejay! -
Not mine, but a mate in Wakefield.. his Fender 57RI USA Precision went walkies at the end of the night from The New Pot Oil in Wrenthorpe. It was in a Hiscox case, and as the pic shows it's a sunburst, maple neck, with anodised gold plate.
Which would be a great solution except that it doesn't magically make the neck of the bass wider or narrower to compensate for changing the string spacing. On a well made bass the outer strings should be equidistant from the edge of the neck along its whole length. Simply altering the string spacing at the bridge is going to change this, and IMO affect playability. The reason bridges like this exist is not so players can mess about with string spacing, but so that Schaller can sell a single version of it to all their manufacturer customers and it will fit the bass irrespective of the string spacing that has been chosen for of the OVERALL DESIGN of each different bass that the bridge is fitted to. Also having owned a bass with this particular model of bridge, I couldn't possibly recommend it as IMO it is one of the most over-complicated and difficult to adjust designs I've ever come across. I can only think of one (by Wlkinson) that was less user friendly.
I know what you mean about the neck spacing, but I've done the 'wrong thing' extremely successfully and in fact two of my favourite basses are on either a too wide or too narrow neck for how I use them. Allegedly. The Schaller 2000 bridge is actually very simple in use if you take a few minutes to understand it. I clicked with it from the first!
And having owned several basses fitted with the Schaller 3D bridge, I can confidently say that the saddles do not move when the strings are changed. The wheel mechanism is sufficiently stiff to prevent this.
This is true.. I had one on a bass years ago, my first conversion job! :-)
If your into modding, here's a great bridge and you can space to your liking http://guitar-parts....4ef6171416X145d
Yup.. Schaller 2000, brill bridges. I have a couple on basses. Certainly available 4, 5 and 6 string. Iirc they go from 15.5 to 20mm

I just spoke to Hiscox.. yes, they are interchangeable. If you email Peter at Hiscox - - he'll get one or two in the post for you! :-)

super high pitch 'whine' with treble boost on active preamp?
hubrad replied to goonieman's topic in Repairs and Technical
More likely there's something in the vicinity which is causing the previously imperceptible whine, and the treble boost is enhancing it. The battery could well alter the pattern by which it's being picked up. All kinds of things can cause electromagnetic interference.. cabling, lighting, transformers, mobile phones.. you name it! Tried switching things off to see if anything in the house is the cause? -
Schaller also do the 2000 series, which has fully adjustable string spacing. Did you get that neck from Cotswold? Looked like a serious bargain..

Nobody even yet mentioned the fact of all these different cabs and speakers. . One 210 will be different to the next and to a 115 or 212. To get a proper comparison, surely you'd have to take two or more heads along to one gig or room and put them into the same cab in the same context? I agonised for ages when buying an amp, but now I'll spend years learning its ins and outs through my cabs. A beautiful journey! :-)

Thredded screw on cover for truss adjuster
hubrad replied to peanutmans's topic in Repairs and Technical
Not removing the teeth , but straightening the wavy edge. When you look at the blade you'll see what I mean. Makes it much more controllable. -
Thredded screw on cover for truss adjuster
hubrad replied to peanutmans's topic in Repairs and Technical
Do you mean the head is stripped, so the screwdriver can't grab anything? If so, the best way for me is to use a junior hacksaw blade.. hammer the wavy edge flat , and cut a straight slot across the head. Then you can use a small flat screwdriver to get the screw moving. If this all sounds confusing, get a mate who's into DIY or car fixing. . They should be able to do it. -
You're going to need to learn to use a router.. Welcome to Project World!
Maybe have a chat with your neighbours and give them your mobile number. Say that you do practice bass but don't want to disturb them. Tell them to drop you a polite text if it sounds unreasonably loud to them. That way they have a way of telling you to turn it down that's not confrontational (which may have been why your old neighbours didn't say anything to you directly) and you'll be happier in the knowledge that you're not disturbing them.
This, really. I know our neighbours have two kids, as we sometimes hear the six year old throwing a full-on tantrum then the following day we'll all laugh at her! We get on really well with next door, and I said that very thing to them ages ago, just in case I forget it's way past someone else's bedtime. Similarly handy if one of the houses is about to do some DIY or the like.

Advice needed on how to power a Trace Elliot BFC please
hubrad replied to Urban Lions's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm taking g the cab to a tech next week so I'll keep you all posted on the wiring.
This sounds like the most sensible thing to do by far! Good luck with the cab.. if you like the sound with a 130, it will be immense with a 600.. you shouldn't need to push that amp too hard, so headroom a go-go. -
Post a tune that made you stop breathing the first time you heard it

https://www.youtube....h?v=iT_RGgFSN3M "Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette" by Moving Hearts stopped me in my tracks.. I'd heard a few people rave about them to the extant I thought it was hype. The whole album is brilliant to this day, with amazing interplay between pipes, guitar and sax. Eoghan O'Neill on bass.. went on to be in Van Morrison's band, also has played with many in the upper echelon of the Irish scene. -
Nothing wrong with having one (or more) to play and one (or more) to tinker with.. :-)
