1.
Tanglewood is about as big as they get here.
Hahaha ha! As importers and clever marketing goes, yes!
2. I use a Realist, which is very natural sounding, both plucked and bowed. Love it!
3.
I have the same issue sometimes Lew. Reads my E as B. And no it isn't that far out of tune It is something nearby making it wonky. Go somewhere quiet and it'll work fine every time. Don't know why it's only the E!
You often get that E to B thing, as the B is the next strongest harmonic on the E string. Even worse with fresh strings with all their harmonic richness! Easy to get round, simply play the 12th fret harmonic - E - which is at 1/2 the string length and cuts out all the 'odd' divisions i.e. 1/3 (, 1/5 (G#) etc.
4. After shemeckfrac's question re shortness behind the bridge, I got round to measuring them; bizarrely the A is the shortest at just over 150 cm, the rest being around the 160cm mark.
5. Open to offers for creamy goodness! :-)
6. Group hug, guys! Love Basschat. :-)
7. Also generally I'd aim to have your fingertips on the French bow, rather than the half-grip pictured. More flexibility. I was told in early days to put the bow on a flat surface, relax my hand and pick up the bow. The hold kinda dictates itself. The more finger joints you have free before the bow, the more flexibility hence the more fine control. However, looking around images of the same, most people seem to do the half-grip, which is definitely easier. I actually went to the dark side and now use a German grip bow, with which you get more power but far less flexibility. Seems to work for Gary Karr! ;-)
8. Sold Tom a strap recently; all went smoothly with good communication and prompt payment, many thanks!
9. Paul bought a strap from me recently, and all went swimmingly. Good easy communication and prompt payment, many thanks! :-)
10. Ian bought a strap from me recently; communication was easy, and all went smoothly. Cheers for a pleasant transaction!
11. You're welcome to a go on mine with Honey Jazz on if you fancy, and I'm sure Keith will say the same. P'raps have a get together sometime.
12. Up to you on that, but I had them on a 108cm scale bass so slightly extra tension. The way I see it, if slap is your priority go lower, if the note is the thing go higher.
13. Huppity bump. :-)
14. I used Obligato ages ago, and found them great for that bassline-plus-percussive type of playing. Some folks who prioritise the slap part of things will want lower tension, but if you want solid bass then go for it! Also great for bowing. Moved on to Evah mittel, a bit higher tension but louder too. Expensive, mind! Nowadays using Innovation - mostly Honey Jazz - and enjoying them immensely. Probably just high tension are the ones to avoid. Do you know Keith - Mr Bassman? http://basschat.co.uk/user/143-mr-bassman/ He may well know of a bass setterupper round Harrogate. If not, I'll try and find out who my mate David uses in Lincs.. always goes to this chap, all the way from Leeds, 'cause he's good!
15. Whereabouts are you? If around W.Yorks you're welcome to a go on my Cruiser to see if it does the job for you. Mine's a defret, which I'm happy with as a fretless/DB player anyway. I think Cruiser also did a fretless model but not in JB format. They were excellent value when they were available new, so a used one is even better.
16. I've used both Trace Elliot and GK heads into EA cabs with great results.
17. I had the guitar version decades ago.. even the treble could really push an amp hard. Can you try it in anything with a gain indicator? If it's the pre that's at fault, I'd be more inclined to fit a modern, far less battery-hungry unit. Excellent basses, but probably not so collectable that the original preamp makes so much difference,
18.
Source Audio Orbital Modulator: does Flange, Vibe, Chorus and Phaser - it's epic.
+1 for the Source Audio. It also allows storage of two memory settings, plus via Hot Hand or (their) expression pedal you can control one of the parameters on the hoof e.g. that Leslie-style speed change.
