Even worse with fresh strings with all their harmonic richness! Easy to get round, simply play the 12th fret harmonic - E - which is at 1/2 the string length and cuts out all the 'odd' divisions i.e. 1/3 (, 1/5 (G#) etc.

Also generally I'd aim to have your fingertips on the French bow, rather than the half-grip pictured. More flexibility. I was told in early days to put the bow on a flat surface, relax my hand and pick up the bow. The hold kinda dictates itself. The more finger joints you have free before the bow, the more flexibility hence the more fine control. However, looking around images of the same, most people seem to do the half-grip, which is definitely easier. I actually went to the dark side and now use a German grip bow, with which you get more power but far less flexibility. Seems to work for Gary Karr! ;-)

Up to you on that, but I had them on a 108cm scale bass so slightly extra tension. The way I see it, if slap is your priority go lower, if the note is the thing go higher.

I used Obligato ages ago, and found them great for that bassline-plus-percussive type of playing. Some folks who prioritise the slap part of things will want lower tension, but if you want solid bass then go for it! Also great for bowing. Moved on to Evah mittel, a bit higher tension but louder too. Expensive, mind! Nowadays using Innovation - mostly Honey Jazz - and enjoying them immensely. Probably just high tension are the ones to avoid. Do you know Keith - Mr Bassman? http://basschat.co.uk/user/143-mr-bassman/ He may well know of a bass setterupper round Harrogate. Whereabouts are you? If around W.Yorks you're welcome to a go on my Cruiser to see if it does the job for you. Mine's a defret, which I'm happy with as a fretless/DB player anyway. I think Cruiser also did a fretless model but not in JB format. They were excellent value when they were available new, so a used one is even better.
