Very soon after I started playing bass, still in school, I joined a rock ‘n roll band called Porridge and the Hubcaps. Well why not? We got a good few gigs before we lost one of the hubcaps.

I’ll ask the wife if she can hear it, she has bat ears.

Having seen this thread brought back from slumber I brought mine out of the cupboard and put it through it’s paces. The enhance knob does make a difference but I keep it off. I had forgotten how good this pedal is, and it’s very quiet, no hiss. I never used it with a Stingray before but it sounds pretty good. I’ll keep it on the board in place of the Ampeg OptoComp, which I really like, for the next gig and see how it goes.

GAK in Brighton https://www.gak.co.uk/en/sell-your-gear. Great shop with friendly helpful staff.

All the bands I’ve ever been in, no one person actually owned it or the name. I owned the domain names of one of the more recent bands. When I left I kept renewing them until fairly recently. The band carried on until it naturally dissolved. The website had long gone by then.

Yet another band name suggestion thread
Cliff Edge replied to Leonard Smalls's topic in General Discussion
I came here to suggest The New Funky Slightly Jazzy Blues Band, but I like yours better 🙂 -
Reading this thread makes me ask, is it even worth the effort putting stuff on a streaming platform? And how do the returns compare to selling cd’s at gigs? The last time I was involved in that we made a significant profit off 2 albums and generated a lot of gigs.

Excellent show and a full house to boot.

I shall be in Bexhill on Sea this evening watching Curtis Stigers at the Del La Warr Pavilion. Part of the Rye Jazz and Blues Festival.

I bought a set of LaBella DTB 760FS a short while ago, not from Amazon but a well known music retailer, because I admit they were the cheapest I could find, and put them on my Stingray. I wasn’t really happy from the start but I carried, on thinking they would bed in. But D and G strings just sounded thin and the overall feel of the strings wasn’t what I’m familiar with as a long term user. The packing looked kosher to me. But today I took them off and put on a used set of TI Jazz flats that were on the bass before. Instantly better. So not just Amazon methinks.

Ah I’ve seen this before. I had no idea it was you, but why should I 🙂 -

You are correct, it is not something I was aware of. I am always happy to be corrected. -
1972 Jazz Bass - Verification of a few things

It is very difficult to accurately date any Fender instrument from the early CBS years. They bought up large quantities of components to save money and dumped them in the parts bins for the assemblers to pick from. So it’s quite possible to get a guitar that has apparently been made in two different years if you go by the numbers on neck plates and pots. The only reliable dateable bits if they are stamped at all are the wooden bits manufactured in the factory. Some things on those parts that changed the appearance of the instruments are often a better way, like the position of the tug bar, where that transition is known from Fender catalogues. -
1972 Jazz Bass - Verification of a few things

Very interesting thread and I’m not sure what anyone would make of mine. You can see the neck stamp isn’t very helpful. Maple neck with black binding and block markers. Two holes for the tug bar under the G string, four bolt neck. The pickups, pots and wiring all went in the bin at various times years ago when they stopped functioning or got noisy. Back then collectable 70’s guitars were not a thing and gigging 5 or 6 days a week I needed a working bass. It still plays nicely but doesn't get much use these days. -

I know serial numbers on the neck plate do not date exactly but that number is some way outside of 1972/3 according to most databases. I’m not confident in dating mine from that era but my serial starts with 37 and the neck end stamp is illegible. -
You don’t have to go far into FB Marketplace before it becomes apparent most of the sellers have little or no imagination when it comes to writing the ad. So I’m not surprised your text was lifted.

What are you listening to right now?

Havana Daydreaming. Jimmy Buffett. Nice and laidback to go with the very nice weather we’re having sown South. -
Our apple tree was very productive last year and we left windfalls at the end of the driveway in a cardboard box every day. The apples disappeared every day, the box didn’t. But if we left them in an old supermarket carrier bag, that went too.

On the plus side I’ve bought 3 nice basses off there, one during lockdown and the others since. Maybe I was just lucky.

The duo I’m in we decided not to have any breaks so it’s frequently two and a half to three hours, bar gigs mainly. We find this actually keeps more people from sodding off half way through. The last four piece country rock band was usually 2 x 45 minutes or there abouts. It was never set in stone and depended a lot on crowd reaction.

What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?
Cliff Edge replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
I may have posted this before but we were in New York in September 1996 celebrating our wedding anniversary, and I was allowed to buy a new Stingray from Manny’s that was manufactured September 10th 1996. Eventually brought it back to Blighty, used it for about 4 years and sold it on eBay to a lady in Scotland who bought it for her boyfriend. Been looking for it ever since. . Serial No. B03721. -
My feeling is if a recently purchased item is faulty to the point where it needs repair, then the retailer is not the ideal, or correct, repairer. Unlikely to have the expertise. Return to the manufacturer for repair or better still refund / replace.

I was pleased it wasn’t about that bloke in U2.

I haven’t watched any live stuff but did watch Keane and Shania on iPlayer. The BBC seems to have finally cracked the sound this year. In past years it was always a bit crap with vocals often hard to hear. I was very impressed with Keane, and Shania was obviously having issues with her IEM’s at times, especially at the start. Great band except for the bass player.
