Best Chromatic tuner for my bass? Plus Rack versus Pedal? Pros and Cons
jim_bass replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in Effects
Korg pitchblack - worth every penny. Tracks the lows like a dream. Used to have a rack tuner, but too much to carry - this one fits in my bass case. Also useful mute switch. -

Cabinet cover is on hold for Gadge. Just checking its the right size I've attached an image of the amp that the cover is for. It's the new Klystron range and the early 500W model (which they no longer produce - the new one has 2 handles on the top and looks the same as the 1000W version) Anyway - image below... [It's not the original Klystron - which is now the ABM500]

I have a pair or matching amps covers. They are for an Ashdown Klystron 500 amp head and an [s]ABM Mini 15 cabinet[/s] SOLD. The were sent to me in error from http://www.amplifiercoversonline.com/ as they did not fit my amp and cabinet. The amp cover is for the smaller Klystron 500 head - 1 handle in the middle. (My amp has 2 handles!) The cab cover is for the ABM Mini 15 cabinet (I have a Classic Mini 15) Anyway, they didn't want them back so now they are for sale. The cost of the covers to be made and delivered was about £70, but they sent me a replacement set for free. So they are yours for £10 each plus postage. I'll add some pictures later - but you can get a fair idea from the website. They are black with white beading (to match the beading on the amp )

Great bloke. Communication was good. he drove down and collected the amp - very easy sale. Hope the gigs start coming soon mate!

I've had quite a few PM's about this so I figured I'd just post the answer for all to see. I was hoping for £100 for the pair as the amp is well used and definitely needs some TLC. If you want me to split them, then I'd like £50 for each. Not sure how this fits with other prices on here. As I didn't buy the amp/cab I don't know how old it is or how much they originally cost.

Hi this listing is for an old amp/cabinet that has been sat around unused. It is owned by my church, but as I'm the only bass player, I take my Ashdown rig. Basically, its been well used - 2/3 times a week, but has been sat for the last 18 month unused. The amp is a bit crackly and needs some TLC, but the cabinet seems to work fine. Full gallery of images is here: http://gallery.me.com/james.cartwright#100078 The head is a commando 100W amp and they were both made in the UK. The serial number and date have both rubbed off the metal plates, but I'm sure someone will know a bit more about these. Any reasonable offers accepted as we just need to clear some room in our PA cupboard. Collection only from Louth, Lincolnshire as these are pretty heavy.

So what do you drive to transport your bass gear around?
jim_bass replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
Smart ForTwo (yes the little one). However, my stuff goes in a transit van with all the PA for our church. -
Why learning to use your gear bloody works
jim_bass replied to maxrossell's topic in General Discussion
Me and our lead guitarist spend a lot of time discussing effects, tone, technique etc. Our drummer just bangs the hell out of everything and our other guitarist tends to dial in too much of whatever effect he is playing with at the time. We have since decided to arrange an extra "dial that tone in" practice, where all we'll do is muck around with the settings to get something that works well together. Now to find out if it works! -
As someone who grew up a mixture of green day / offspring / nirvana / metallica / pearl jam in the early mid nineties bla bla bla etc etc etc. I have to disagree. Green day had the pop punk stuff down and the bass on the Insomniac album is great especially "Stuart and the Ave." Seems to me that since they release the last few albums it has become uncool to like green day.

I realised that I set up my basschat account over a month ago, but never posted an introduction. How rude. I have been playing bass for about 14 years. Previously in a punk band whilst at university, and now I play in a couple of bands at my church. I play about 3 times per week and I guess my style varies with the range of songs we play. My top 3 bass players (before reading this forum - now I'm not so sure) are probably; 1. Matt Freeman (Rancid) 2. Les Claypool (Primus) 3. Timmy C (R.A.T.M) I currently play a Yamaha RBX374 --> Pitchblack tuner --> DI --> PA. Although I've just bought an Ashdown Neo mini 15 cabinet and my Klystron 500 head is on order. I'm attempting to simplify things after using rack gear for a number of years (wireless, V-amp, tack tuner, midi foot controller) Anyway, other than bass I like mountain biking / bmx / snowboarding etc. and teach ICT at a secondary school. So there you go. Hello to all you basschatters.

Sennheiser FreePort receiver - how to mount
jim_bass replied to Bassmonkey's topic in Accessories and Misc
The rack mount kit doesn't fit. I bought one for a GW100(?) To rack my freeports, I used a 1U shallow shelf (http://www.studiospares.com/Racktrays/Racktray-1U-441X150mm/invt/408890) and some heavy duty velcro. You have to take the 4 feet off first. The rack gets a lot of movement, but the receiver has stayed tight. Incidentally, 2 receivers will fit side-by-side on 1 shelf. -
I wipe off/mop up the sweat from my bass after each set and also wipe the strings down with fast fret. Funnily enough I don't get any build up of crud on basses I play regularly and I play every day at the moment (gigs/rehearsals/home practice).
+1

This is awesome mate, what software are you using on the mac for recording? Logic? I like the song on myspace too.

Back to the OP. I am reading the "AB guide to Music theory" This seems to be a standard for most people to learn from. My wife had it from her piano grades. I think there are 2 books one for grades 1-5 and the other for 6-8 or something like that.
Another possible route is using a Behringer V-Amp Pro , a decent power amp and a lightweight high power cab. I have one mated to a Inter M R300 amp (300 watt bridged into 8 ohms) I went for this amp due to its 8 ohm bridged setting and run it through a single 12" 300 watt cab that measures 14" x 14" x 12" (home-made with a Skytronic 902.442 300 watt / 600 watt peak driver ) although there are quite a few good 12" or 2 x 10" commercial cabs that would do the job. Total cost of my setup was £58 for the V-amp, £50.00 for the power amp and £40.00 for the cab (all bought second-hand) Having tried a few heads recently I much prefer the V-Amp with its amazing amount of variation and fine tuning plus if you add a Midi - controller pedal you can use quite a few different settings in a live situation. The V-amp also gives you the option of wet / dry DI output to your desk and even SPDIF if needed
Glad you are liking the V-Amp mate. After selling all my rack gear (including my V-amp to Prosebass) I have gone back to an amp/cab. My Ashdown Klystron 500 in on it's way as we speak. The v-amp was too complicated for me and I never had time to use all of the features.

If you had an itchy bum at night., right ..
jim_bass replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've never had enough money or basses to be able (nor been cool enough for it to look good). When I saw Billy Joe Armstrong smash up his guitar at a green day gig, i believe he put his guitar away and brought out a cheapo one for the encore. That either very cleaver or very dumb. -
First, I would see how much gain he is using on the mic preamp on the desks channel. If it is still too 'hot', then I would first try lowering your input gain on the amp and upping your master volume to keep the level, but send a lower signal to the desk (?) If that doesn't work, get a seperate DI box (Behringer make one for about £20 - I know it's Behringer, but their DI's do the job nicely - we use a few of them or our guitars). It should have a 20Db cut switch on the DI, so that you can send a lower signal to the desk. Also, it will mean you have a good backup in your kit if the amp ever dies. This will mean connecting your amp to the DI box with a jack to jack using the amps line out and then use an XRL to connect the DI to the desk. Hope this makes sense.

Singing and Playing..Do you find this hard/easy???
jim_bass replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I sing and play (sometime lead, sometimes backing) If the song has a regular beat then it's generally easier. If the bass line plays offbeat or in a weird pattern then I struggle. My fallback position is always root notes on the verse if its a hard bass line and just make sure I know the chorus/intro/outro/bridge etc. Oh, and pitching a note when the bass plays a harmonic or a different bass note over the top generally throws me - so I get someone else in the band to pitch it with me first. -
I play a Yamaha RBX374. Although I've got GAS for a jazz.

I like the stickered up bass. Reminds me of my old Dean bass. al la offspring stickers! You can't go wrong with punk bands and skateboarding stickers
