    I'd love to play this beautiful bass every day and gig it two to three times a week as was the case a year or so back, but it's simply not how things are now. So, this rather lovely instrument is up for sale, or possibly PX with a DB to the value of a maximum of £2000 value with cash balance my way. I have a relatively recent insurance valuation from Martin's at £7,500, which given the quality of the instrument, seems entirely reasonable. I paid £4200 used in 2013. The bass is in very good cosmetic and functional condition, the only obvious deviation from new being some play wear to the edges of the bass side upper bout.     Met up with Stuart yesterday and it was like meeting up with an old mate we've spoken so many times on BC! Top guy to deal with and I'd have happily chatted for hours had I not had to leave the engine running for fear it wasn't going to start again! So bass stuff is currently having to exit as opposed to enter my place (the music room is looking rather empty, My Yamaha SLB-100 upright, my Phil Jones rig, my Markbass combo, my Yammie 2024x and probably BB1200, the list goes on). Anyway, Lawrie has been a real gent about it, because not only have I backed out of an agreed deal, but because I pestered him with questions before deciding to go for it, to which he patiently responded, and because he also very kindly had the bass professionally setup ahead of packing and sending. Needless to say I'm feeling a bit guilty. Still, my loss, your gain folks, this bass sounds amazing live and recorded, is probably the only relic bass I've seen that looks like a legitimately worn in instrument, and has sufficient provenance to allay the worries of the most cautious of potential buyers. And if I win the lottery this week (I've never done it before but I may start), I'll be back on the phone Lawrie Chris

    Thanks Martin, this never sold and in the meantime I've decided to let go of my PJB rig and this little thing and opt for something in the middle size-wise, an AER. Worth mentioning that - perhaps surprisingly - this is plenty loud enough for rehearsing with a quiet drummer and a few casual musos. It's got a lovely middy punch that really does cut through. Probably not the rig for dub.

I'm prepared to entertain serious cash offer and will be even more entertaining should the buyer be happy to collect from Canterbury or Aberystwyth. And by entertain I don't mean play a few old Tom Waits numbers, although that could be arranged also

    I've had a few questions re splitting, so I guess fair prices would be £475 for the head and £150 for each of the cabs (I'd rather sell the whole lot in one go hence the low price for the rig). Trade-wise I'm not really looking for anything at present, but asking can't hurt Chris

    I'm selling this rig ludicrously cheap because I bought it ludicrously cheap and because the 9B cab took a slight knock on delivery that I've yet to sort. The knock is on the underside and doesn't impact on tone or function, although I now use the cabs on an acoustic platform as opposed to the wheels as due to the knock the wheels didn't sit quite right. A quote for repair was £50, I just haven't got around to getting it done. Having said this, for most gigs I simply use the head and the 6T, the whole rig in anything but a very large room or in avery loud band would be overkill. It is a very powerful unit, and surprisingly good for both DB and electric. Reason for selling, I've got two big, heavy rigs. This rig isn't an SVT and a fridge for sure, but all the same it takes us quite a lot of room on stage (the speakers are pretty deep), and each unit - even the head - requires a trip to the car, which is fine for big gigs, but for big gigs I prefer my Ampeg anyway. So, I've ordered something smaller and this lovely rig is up for grabs at a price that's about 1/3 of what it would cost new. Collection from Canterbury, Kent, or possibly Aberystwyth (Wales) by prior agreement and prior payment. I may split as I would quite like to keep the 9B cab.     Well despite the fact that I owe this specific bass a lot - namely that it got me into Yamaha basses generally and thereby started a new phase of my bass playing career - my beaten up 70's BB1200 seems to be my go to instrument for gigs and I've seen a nice old instrument that is calling my name, so this is for grabs again. The PUP selector switch is a little emotional at present, but a new unit is currently winging it's way from Japan. Happy to talk cash offers and/or trades. A decent Markbass combo appeals at present Chris

    Damn, just when I don't have Precision in which to install it! Great great great preamp that does wonderful things to a Precision. A design classic and as I've said many times before, an extremely elegant solution to activating your Precision without the slightest modification to anything other than the two bits of solder at the end of each cable from the PUP. I remember being really disappointed at how noisy my Fender CS Jaco Jazz was, and I mean REALLY noisy, so I got onto Talkbass only to be told that this was the result of it being a 100% accurate copy of Jaco's '62 Jazz which was apparently also really noisy. I guess FCS are in a no win situation sometimes! The pics of the misaligned neck above aren't as bad as I was expecting to be honest, and to return to a comment I made in an earlier post, I have seen it that bad on EBMMs and Rics. Either way however, I wouldn't be happy as with my clumsy hands I'd be pulling the G off the fretboard. I also think the OP - being a bass player and a member of BC - might just want to sell it one day and that degree of string misalignment would put a few people off. As others have said, I'd like to see a pic of the whole length of the strings, especially over the PUPs and further along the board. There would for example be no point in repositioning the neck is that takes the strings away from the pole-pieces and/or causes other problems (neck instability/intonation/fretbuzz etc). If this bass left Corona perfect and has taken a knock between there and here, then yes, it might make more sense to simply get it sorted here (although as suggested above, you'd expect a bass of this apparent quality to be a little more resilient). If however it' a 4.15 Friday afternoon instrument it might be better sent back to California either for a fix, a new bass or a refund.

Perhaps it's true of all bass manufacturers, I don't know, but it's not a problem I've had with the other brands with which I've dabbled on the large scale, EBMM and, dare I say it, Ric (I know others don't share my experience). I'm early into what will no doubt become my Yamaha period but it doesn't appear to be a problem they have either, despite apparently substantially lower price per unit quality than Fender?

[/quote] That was kinda my thinking, given that terms like 'Masterbuilt' are banded about, they seem to be able to do the stuff I can't do (build a beautiful flamed maple neck for example), but can't do the stuff I could - and before anyone asks - have done, that is line up a bridge with a neck and then gut the PUPs underneath the strings! [/quote] How, given Fender are a company who've been building Precision Basses for 63 years and Jazzes for 54 years, can you understand the bridge being drilled wrong? It's not exactly precision engineering (although to stretch the metaphor clearly FCS take a slightly jazz approach). I've owned three FCS basses and all of them had the type of issues that had Bass Doc built them I'd have sent it back saying "can you sort this out for me". Thing is, the stuff that Bass Doc or similar guys produce tends not to have these problems. Dingus is right in one sense, pressure, but while I normally agree with everything he says, and given the extended build times that FCS are famous for, I don't think it's time pressure in terms of getting them to dealers, it's time pressure in terms of getting as many produced as possible in as short a time frame, i.e., more money for less quality.

    QC on Fender Custom Shop instruments used to be just as hit and miss as the US stock versions. Seems the teams responsible for QC on US stock instruments have recently upped their game to the point at which I'd say the chances of dodgy workmanship are greater with CS models than stock. Materials, paint finishes etc might be more desirable on CS for sure, but the quality control of the instruments that come out is clearly simply not up to scratch. Either that or FCS actually don't care.
