First up, maple FL Precision, Shuker neck that is rather wonderful, 70's Daion MIJ body that has that 'I'm genuinely old and not reliced' vibe, EMG Geezers, and yes, LOLLIPOPS It's not a responder so the Badass is coming off to be replaced by a nice 70's RI BBOT

‘51 PUPs are a f***ing nightmare, I think a thumb-rest might be going on at some stage, although I’ve done OK so far I’m worried about knocking the PUP around too much
-
Which was me until we started rehearsing Odelay 👍

Lovely quote from JMJ about the recording of the bassline “The guys were getting some amusement at the fact that I was sweating bullets trying to correctly play this monster I had created. That's my favorite thing to do: write things that are at the threshold of my ability.” Nice short article here https://www.guitarworld.com/features/justin-meldal-johnsen-on-becks-sexx-laws

Oh shit, to play bass like JMJ here......
-
Glorious, that’s quite an eclectic selection! It might be an urban myth but I heard about a guy spending weeks removing a set of Top Trumps cards his lad had seen fit to store in his DB 😀

Make sure your kids haven’t dropped/inserted a small plastic toy that came in a McDs Happy Meal through the F-Hole. Obvs not speaking from experience 🤔

That vocal ain't sampled 👍
-
Again quite poppy, but I love this, elements of Beach Boys and Devo, a heady mix...

Will listen to it, thanks Re sampling, it's the extraordinary way you simply can't tell unless you REALLY listen and REALLY know your music, more than once I've heard a Radio 6 DJ play an obscure tune from the 60s or 70s followed by 'And of course Beck sampled that in.......". Mostly CC of course 👍

It's lovely, it took close to 10-years of talking to make it happen, but it is a great way to play music. I'm very lucky to be by some distance the least talented person in the band, which is highly motivating 👍

A strong statistical likelihood Lawrie mate 😁
-
And this is simply sublime songwriting and performance.......

Haha, he's a magpie at times, it's really hard even with some of his more obvious songs to know what's performed and what's sampled, but as you say, the songs are often wonderful, and the creativity in the interplay or performance and sampling is at times breathtaking

I'm bloody fortunate to play in a band that rehearses an album for 3-months, gigs it once, and then moves on to the next. It's great fun, it's challenging, and for someone who's really easily bored, it's a great way to be constantly engaged with a band. So, we're doing Odelay by Beck at the moment, gig in June. It's an interesting departure for me coming from a mostly rock/funk/blues background to be playing such an eclectic and informal album. Odelay's often cited as his best album but I felt that musically it wasn't quite where I'd always placed Beck - although I realised that as an artist he'd pretty much passed me by for 30 or so years - so having a day to myself set out to do some wider listening. f*** me! I'm honestly quite blown away by the sheer creativity, diversity, and musicality of his work. As a bass player (I use the term loosely), I'm drawn not only to some extremely well crafted bass lines but also to some wonderful bass tone, the below being a great example... ...but over and above the well known tracks (Devil's Haircut, Where It's At etc), there's also a whole load of crazy in there, although also including great bass playing and tone (alongside some lovely impersonation/plagiarism, Prince and Kravitz get on down), the fretless and and upright in this is sublime.... I'm gonna be spending quite a lot of time working on some of his basslines, once I've mastered the Odelay tracks

Ha ha you and me both mate, their poor tech has saved me a fortune, which in a roundabout way of course has also saved you a fortune 😁

The 100 was designed with orchestral players in mind, the 200 and 300 more with gigging/travelling jazzers and pit players front and centre. The 100 always required a bridge or mag PUP to work live as the piezo/pre were optimised for headphone use and sounded awful amplified, the latter models overcame this 👍
-
Ooh, that's given me an idea.........
-
You don’t need to really - or at least it would be a lot of work for little real gain given that to manage output you can balance the G/D and A/E poles with PUP height, and in doing so some of the tone imbalance would at the same time be resolved (and of course by swapping PUP arrangement you’d probably introduce different tone issues) 👍

For silent practice on an instrument that feels close to an upright to play the Yamaha SLB-100 is hard to beat
-
Yep, and it feels real good to be there mate! Put a Badass on last night to establish whether it's a responder or not, looks a bit odd but hey.......

FS: Ashdown Drophead 200 fliptop combo
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I might split the head and cab after all, the Ashdown cab was surprisingly good with my Ampeg PF-50T, and using the cab as intended - as a flip top - is a whole lot easier with the weight of the Ampeg than with the Drophead itself (I'm also not a fan of the current Ampeg flip top cabs). Another little voice in my head is also saying 'Just sell the Ampeg................' 🤔 -
Indeed 👍

Yep
