Random is good and interesting. My daughters often use my Apple account to listen to music and so when I play things on that account randomly I often find myself listening to music that I wouldn't usually listen to, and without the biases introduced by knowing which performer or radio station I'm listening to. It's amazing how many songs by people such as Justin Beiber are actually pretty damn good if you don't now they're by Justin Bieber before you first listen to them ๐ค

I don't think The Beatles have the sort of status they had 20 years ago to be honest, Sgt Pepper as "The greatest album of all time" etc. I think time has been quite hard on a number of their albums, and while they had some incredible songs, increasingly their status is seen as a function of their era and their cultural and artistic contributions to it as opposed to inherent musical qualities. I've Got a Feeling remains in my Top-10 of all time however Now that Mozart, he's a different kettle of fish altogether

I bought this from the USA a while back intending to build it up but as the result of a recent house move and a whole lot of decking, sheds, fences and walls to repair I'm probably not going to get around to it, so up for grabs here for what I paid on eBay. It's used but in decent condition, and is super-light at 4lbs 7oz. No joke, when the courier handed me the box I thought the seller had forgotten to put the body in, it weighs just over 60% of a Precision body I'm also going to list. If you know Warmoth quality, you know you want this Trades? WHYG? Cheers Chris

BBC4 now for some awesome upright playing

Yep, all a bit safe wasn't it. I used to date a sculptress and she said that get any recognition in her art you had to be able to do fingers, irrespective of your creative vision. BassBoy did fingers well I think ๐ -

Perhaps the BBC should do an X-Factor and put all the contestants in the one band ๐ Nice point about the physical limitations of the instrument, there's always that risk isn't there that we're impressed by the overcoming of these as much by the music itself (although having said that, it's probably true of many instruments, certainly I suspect of slap on electric bass). What I noticed was how clear and well-articulated each and every one of his notes appeared to be; OK some of that might be the quality of the room and the audio engineering, but he seemed to achieve a clarity of tone that to my mind is rare. Despite the physical limitations of the instrument -
Public liability versus indemnity insurance for gigs
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Thanks guys, it seems odd that the venue wants evidence of indemnity cover and not public liability cover, it's a wedding BTW, Having said that, as per @Burns-bass post we are pretty rubbish so perhaps indemnity is more relevant ๐ค -
Can anyone explain the difference, we have a venue requiring indemnity cover apparently apparently indicating PL is not sufficient?

BBC4 now for some awesome upright playing

Agreed, the DB was relatively low in the mix compared to the other soloists, but my ears adapted. And of course he still won, so perhaps something was working about that mix? -

Of course he is, I'd completely forgotten, I started a thread on him a while back, probably my fave bassist -

I thought exactly the opposite, I'm no great fan of upright as a lead instrument (I tried with Mingus for years), but found his playing more accessible and importantly, enjoyable. I'm looking forward to watching it again ๐ Now the pianist who followed I really did not enjoy at all -

FS Enfield Fusion fretless 4-string - *WITHDRAWN*
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Thanks mate, I'm still wondering whether to try it with a fretted neck, I suspect the differences between the PUP options would be far more marked, and I'm quite excited about the idea of a fretted bass that does good impressions of Jazz, Precision and Stingray, especially with a nice set of flats on board.... ๐ค -

Just looked again and think the lighting changes fooled me into thinking the stage had changed. Suspect the Markbass rig wasn't involved in the DB section ๐ -

Unless I was dreaming the rig had moved when the bass player was using it, which is why I assumed the DB guy was also going through it? But yes, what a great player, might be biased but he seemed head and shoulders above the rest in terms of range and versatility/creativity ๐ -

All joking aside, why - in a Jazz competition and a pretty traditional one at that - would a double bass player use a mic into a huge bas rig that was itself mic'd to front of house? I'm working on the basis that both he as a pretty competent musician and the BBC sound guys both know what they're doing. Is it simply that's the sound he prefers? Going against that is the idea that the same rig was used for the electric bass player who sat in with a couple of the other acts? I was also wondering whether the rig was just 'there' and not active during the double bass set, but the stage arrangement seemed to vary with the players so I'm guessing not? Last time I saw a double bass and a 8x10 on the same stage was Old Crow Medicine Show at the roundhouse, but that's a very different genre and sound (and to be honest he might as well have been playing an electric for the sound he was getting) -
