  1. Yeah I was wondering if the deal was the same in the other direction if using Parcelforce/USPS. I wouldnt be tempted to find out, that's for sure. I think its 7 weeks today since my bass was mailed in Virginia.
  2. Play it at ร—1.5 and sounds suspiciously like a normal conversation
  3. I'm really not joking when I say, this needs playing at ร—1.5 speed. Really.
  4. I'm longing to read someone saying they've tuned their six-string B-D#-G-B-D#-G so that is literally true: 4 fingers, 4 frets, 4 semitones, and then up to the next string. A seamless legato line effortless in every context, with the range of a five-string. Relearning the fretboard would take more than a moment, I suppose, but at least the top 3 and bottom 3 are identical? I read that some mid century jazz guitarist tuned an 8 string guitar like this to facilitate playing atonal music.
  5. I found this thread because I was doing a search for Fresher basses - theres an interesting thread on TB started by a Britisher who's got a MIJ Fresher p-bass: Fresher Electric Bass ("my friend bought it off an old Sabbath roady (apparently)") I was wondering how much these instruments sold for when they were new, relative to the price of Fenders etc. Were they around in the late 70s, just after the sterling leapt down the ๐Ÿšฝ ? That E string looks like it could tell a few stories.
  6. Trying to read up on the specific qualities of different strings is like juggling ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™€๏ธ wet ๐Ÿงผ bars ๐Ÿงผ of ๐Ÿงผ soap, but I've got the impression that within the world of nickel coated steel those GHS Boomers are similar to Roto Bass or Elites Players. I'm enjoying these pure steel Swing Bass, but once my G&L strung with them finally makes it through the postal system, I might go back to the Boomers or something similar on the BB - they just seemed so well matched to the character of the 424 when set to both pickups: the result was a nicely obvious rich tone, straightforwardly pleasing. Not harsh or crude, but not built for subtlety.
  7. Cheers, I just took a look. ยฃ25 a set, that's a lot less than StringsDirect's ยฃ33.... But I think I'll get on with getting used to the Rotosounds at ยฃ18 a time.
  8. Now know what the mystery strings that came with my 424 and suited it so well were: 45-105 GHS Boomers. Bit pricey in this country, unfortunately Anyway, now have Rotosound Swing Bass on it, and am equally happy with them, albeit in a slightly different way.
  9. I had forgotten why it was I found myself happily lost in YouTube videos of 80s Charvels eg Those videos are always improved by being in a language you don't understand. My favourite is a Spanish bassist demoing Yamahas.
  10. Once I've mastered a 36" unlined fretless six-string Dingwall, there's no way I'll be seen in public with anything else ๐Ÿ˜
  11. 1 polite persuader vs 3 people already doing what they want to do.... Away win. If you say, "this is an 80s band; we will be playing 80s music and 80s music only; who's in and who's out?" then even if they all hop it and you're once again recruiting from scratch, your vision is still intact. So, which do you put as yr top priority, your new musical friends (in which case, get used to their wishes) or yr artistic vision (in which case, dont get too attached to anyone)?
  12. I'm looking at the holes in the back of the Line 6 and the HS5. I presume a total standard 100cm guitar cable going from "Model" ouput to input "2" will do me, but need to know if I should have the switch on the Line 6 Output set to "Line" or "Amp"? The manual says Amp is for a bass amp and Line is for everything else. What heading does an active speaker come under? I'm idly wondering what the purpose of the Input 1 is, if anyone wants to tell me.
  13. Ask yourself, what would Steve Harris do?
  14. ๐Ÿ˜ Please may I apply for an analogy for their cover of Little Red Rooster, as well....
  15. I've just had a very enjoyable half hour trying to decide which Jesus and Mary Chain track to post. I think this one, tho a bit later than their classic stuff, nicely demonstrates their virtuoso control of distorted tones - so many layers of different sounds that come and go throughout the song. And a great song, too.
  16. I summoned up the courage to take a look at the Line 6 manual. I was expecting unreadable rubbish but not really annoying unreadable rubbish. Ugghhhhhh.
  17. After comparing that with... ...oh yeah, definitely.
  18. I just bought an HS5. So far have merely plugged the bass directly into it. For home use, there is definitely no shortage of bottom end! Very happy
  19. The problem for USPS is that stuff sent via them goes on the usual scheduled passenger flights from USA to UK - and these days most of those flights are cancelled, hence the massive backlog. My bass has been en route for 6 weeks now. Just so you know..... ๐Ÿ˜…
  20. You can have PayPal do the currency conversion - and the website will do its level best to encourage this - but their exchange rate will not please. I have PayPal charging my credit card so for purchases from USA I have PayPal bill my credit card in USD and let the credit card company do the currency exchange. This seems to me a happy compromise between convenience and cost. PS word of warning about using standard USPS / Parcelforce route - there are huge delays to virtually all countries atm the moment, and, I am painfully experiencing right now, especially to the UK ๐Ÿ˜–
  21. Theres a lot of brianmayerie in Metallica, and this is probably my favourite bit of it As for least favourite.... I never understood why Robert Smith was so often drawn to lifeless plunky guitar sounds. And often felt Johnny Marr jangled a little bit more than was necessary.
  22. Firm ground for blanket mistrust. I've a 7 lb. SB-1 dawdling its way through the international postal system at the moment. If I find it not to have balance issues, you promise to call me a liar, right?
