1. My favourite bass players are the ones who demonstrate a great musicianship. I like good tones but I much prefer identifying with their note choices, rhythmic inflections, the feeling of space and time in which they operate. I can tell that they're good by the way they work for their music and drive it forward.
 2.
You got a bit of a crooner on the vocal there Good song this. And you're dead right, the bass is is perfect for it. Massive kudos for the restraint and tone selection
Thanks he's got a great voice for West End, which is quite literally what he's currently involved in but man the pipes on him defy sense, I've not heard anything or anyone like him. I prefer a throatier dirtier vocal for stuff like this but I can't detract from the lad. Good idea for a thread too.
 3. I'm only as proud of the bass line that I've put down on a track as I am of the track itself. I've played far more 'complicated' bass parts on records we have made, but the three notes that I played on this tune are all I ever felt that it required for it to be a song that I'm very proud of. The rest of the bass is synth bass (which I also played )
 4.
What a f***ing racket.
Haha! Yes indeed. "Alright mate, it's the guys from Warwick, we'd like you to demo a bass for us if you're available. Do you know anything slapped and unwholesome in the key of E?"
 5.
So no one willing to jump in and claim that the Beatles output compositionally surpassed all the Motown output then? Interesting....
That's a different topic altogether I think. The Beatles are not the only best to have ever existed, it's a sea of influence out there!
 6. My last contribution then: I suspect that the Beatles made up one of the most important songwriting team in musical history, and will be remembered and written for hundreds of years just like J.S Bach and Beethoven for musical works of great importance. Those who have gone out of their way to misconstrue - or maybe even genuinely misunderstand - their importance in this thread will constitute a minority of people whose dressed up opinion as fact will fortunately not prevail. Quite an eye opener of a thread.
 7. Hi Greek, I was a 4 string player for years and years before I finally got a 5'er. I think people can downplay the extent to which switching can affect their technique and style but it's just about the amount of time you're willing to practice and accept that low B string as part of your playing. It gets mentioned all the time in topics like this but I actually never play my 5 string like a 5 string, I always play it like a 4 string with an extra string if you see what I mean, i.e. being able to have the facility to drop a full 4th below your usual note doesn't mean you should do it all the time. For me, buying a 5 meant I was able to connect certain passages that I felt would benefit a lower note somewhere in it, it also makes position playing a little easier and finally it opens up the possibilities of what I'm able to with my bass guitar. A 6 string would be too much for me as I don't need those higher notes but the 5 extra low notes are perfect for what I like to do.
 8. It was me who suggested it was out of character for you, it's fine and great you apologised. Been really frustrating the past few weeks on the board. A lot of wind up merchants and massive displays of ignorance which I'm not at all used to seeing on here older and newer members alike, does make me think twice about using the forum nowadays but then to be honest it's all a bit silly anyway as we're all free to dip in and out of posting as we please. It's only the Internet isn't it, nothing to change your life or 'out.
 9.
This is one of my favourites. This could almost be a Chemical Brothers song.
It was They acknowledge it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkkMz2awmbI
 10.
I'm contemplating starting a thread 'Jamerson: If He Were Alive Today He'd Be Getting Lessons From Flea'. Just to distract from the Beatles thread (and ths one).
That Les Claypool certainly could have shown him a thing or two mind.
 11. Great stuff. The other tune that gets me with its level of complexity is this one, such a lot to cram into a song under 2 minutes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE2Vdcv9Q_o
 12. Having just contributed to a thread concerning the overall subjectivity involved in music it seems unfortunately ironic that you're attempting to cause more commotion on the board with this given subject.
 13.
In the very depths of my divorce, which was especially nasty on her part I once cried when I heard "Carry That Weight". Does that count?
That counts. My personal favourite is Here There and Everywhere.
 14.
I actually don't like the Beatles that much but boy are they good and influential.
Oh come on now, everyone has a favourite Beatles tune! Even my dad does, he claims to hate them.
 15. Give it a rest now. 21 posts in and you're in at the deep end, post something constructive. Do you have a favourite Beatles tune maybe? Here's another belter
 16. It's certainly on of the forum's more depressing 17 page reads. So in the spirit of keeping things civil, here's a song for us to enjoy by the most influential and overrated band of all time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-Q9D4dcYng
 17.
And who would have thought that such a simple bass line would make one man so much money. I am led to believe John Deacon has earned a fortune from it with it being used on things like Gladiators etc ( sat night tv not the Russell Crowe epic obviously )
That, and 'You're My Best Friend' and 'I Want to Break Free' amongst others. The guy is very deserving of his fortune, a key songwriter in the band at the time.
 18.
Yes, there's a cat. The ultimate diversion for wives... hehe
Took my girlfriend in there last time, she was diverted by the cat for a full hour, it was brilliant. Top marks on that front!
 19. Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk at his very housey finest. One of my all time favourite tracks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgAJWQCC7L0
 20.
It's been a really lively debate and it just shows how passionate we all are about music. The Fabs were a phenomenon and as i said used to rush over to Twickenham Studios after school to see them while they were filming there. As i said it's been a good thread and a bit of fun and we may all agree on a thread one day (blimey, that'll be boring!) and as Albert Ayler once said "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe". Happy listening to whatever music turns you on!!!!
Cool. Apologies for being a cock.
Fail. And change your name.
I think once again things have got too heated. It's out of character for the poster in question.
 21.
Well that's told me hasn't it? You can't beat the good old 'i'm right, you're wrong' attitude when someone dares to disagree can you?
Just before this thread gets locked inevitably as every thread over the past month has, to be quite honest I'm just a bit bored of the haters. What I'm saying is that you've offered no insight at all that bolsters your opinion that the Beatles have had no lasting influence on popular music at all. The evidence is very much there to prove that your opinion is flawed/wrong/whatever, it's why thesis's and countless books have been penned almost in an effort to understand the meteoric speed at which they were able to not only output music, but cast a vast tsunami of influence over decades of music that is still just as relevant as it was 40 odd years ago. Unfortunately i've risen to it, and got more than a little pissed off over nothing, so I should apologise for that at least, I am admittedly a stubborn, stubborn bastard at times.
 22.
I can totally relate to the ops opinion. I live a walkable distance to the gallery so how come i've only been there a handful of times. I came to the conclusion that each time i go i get a slight feeling of "being in the way" and it takes several months before i've sort of forgotten the experience and give it another try, yet the same thing happens again. Alex (i presume) is not the most friendly of sorts and small-talk is not his thing. I asked if i could try out a bass recently, he went upstairs, got it, brought it down to me, handed it over and strolled off, not a word was spoken, talk about feeling a tad uncomfortable. I think its' such a crying shame the place is crammed full of beautiful gear that i'd happily spend hours tinkering over and no doubt eventually would spend money there even if it took years, (though i did get some work done a while back - but that was after chatting with Martin). But as it is all i want to do is leave not long after arriving. I would say there are 2 things involved here. 1. That Alex is not a bad chap at all, but smalltalk is not his speciality (neither mine which probably doesn't help), if you crack him open a bit he tends to open up or it may be a case of simply bass snobbery ? 2. The place is slightly intimidating, with thousands of pounds worth of gear everywhere, one foot in the wrong place could be costly so it's not exactly easy to relax, or maybe he can spot the difference between a buyer and a tryer at a glance. I'm probably more the latter I'm probably a bit frustrated at living so close to the ultimate "sweet shop" only for the sweets to taste a bit like "raw cabbage" just My 2 cents
Seems like a good way of summing it up. It still won't stop me from popping in when I'm in London/Camden area and I know Alex doesn't mean to be that frosty. But customer service is everything to me, it's what makes a good shop a great shop or a great business. I did wish Alex all the best with The Knowledge but if he happens to read this again, here's hoping he gets on fine with it! Sounds bloody hard.
 23.
Be prepared for the wrath of The Basschat Beatles Preservation Society to descend upon thee!!!!!!!!!!!
You're labouring the point now I feel, I appreciate you've gotten roundly slapped here by a number of people that you've been unable to counter but contrary to what you feel this isn't a site fanatical about any given subject, most people are just too laid back. Let it go.
 24. I've found Alex's interpersonal skills a bit hit and miss, but that's nothing that he hasn't confirmed himself before on this site as I'm certain there are plenty of time wasters. The time I bought my Eden rig a few years back from them I think he figured me a time waster before I finally took the plunge, the times I've after that have been better as I've known what to expect to an extent. The other two guys I have no complaints about at all, Martin was great when I spoke to him and the younger guy was also really nice as well, very accommodating. It's still my favourite place to shop bass wise in London when I'm there.
 25.
Meanwhile show me ONE example of a song structure ANYTHING like "She Loves You" prior to 1964. It doesn't exist.
A lot of things wouldn't exist with out them, full stop, end of story. Most of the people in this thread contesting otherwise are very much free to do so and opinions matter but not a single thing so far has countered the fact that their influence was anything less than extraordinary, most arguments generally stemming from a fairly obvious dislike of the band.
