1. Fascinating interview with Lee Sklar documenting a bit of his history and his experiences in the studio. I think of all the 'old school' of session bass guitar players Lee is one of the best placed to offer his experiences and views, he's had such an amazing career that it's really fascinating to hear him talk about the things he's been involved in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Fm2V-EdM4NY#!
 2. I put some 30 year old bronze strings onto my acoustic one time and they sounded like I'd purchased them that day. Abstain from freezing your strings, keep perishables in your fridge freezer instead!
 3.
Hi Guys the site is maintained and kept up to date on a day to day basis, somethings can get overlooked sometimes though, we keep the brands on there as our stock changes all the time, and it's a pain to keep adding and removing logos. We do have a lot of stock currently so no, not thinning things down, I am doing part time now, as i am studying The Knowledge, as i feel the time has come to try new avenues, I'll be there for a little while yet, sadly we can't all be Bass Direct Alex
Cheers Alex, I really don't mean any disrespect either, I've bought from the Gallery before and I'll be doing so again, it was more just brutal honesty about the site from my point of view as I know you won't want to lose out on online sales. Best of luck with The Knowledge, hope your ability to retain information is better than mine is!
 4. Basschat marketplace, easy.
 5. Keith Duffy's 55-94 is a beast, I want it! Love the Gallery, the guys there are really great, always so helpful. However. I absolutely hate that site, it's dated, clunky and rarely kept up to date. If they made it that bit more accessible and got rid of all the stupid brand logos (mostly of stuff they don't have in stock and are empty when clicked on) then I reckon they might do better from online business... something a bit more like Bassdirect's site dare I say it!
 6.
Thanks, point proven...
In fairness, they are one of the few I can think of, Bergantino maybe? I personally have no issue using a cab from a company who source their drivers elsewhere, I'm too technologically ignorant to know any different!
 7.
How many bass cab manufacturers actually make their own drivers?
Eden did I think.
 8. Nice! Don't see Suhr's come up very often.
 9. It surprises me that you can't cut with a Warwick, they are out and out ballsy in the mids. The Stingray does do mids, just in a different way, it's nowhere near as pronounced but working in conjunction with your onboard EQ and amp I'm sure you'll find the right kinds of sounds.
 10.
U2 were not musicians. None of them had even heard of blues or rock music when they got together. I'm not sure I understand how that could happen but according to Bono it did. They just played what they liked.
Stuart Copeland once tried to claim that reggae had no influence on his drumming style with The Police. I think sometimes artists say things that aren't particularly true in interviews for whatever reason.
 11. U2 are brilliant songwriters, personal opinions aside on members of the band. I would actually describe Adam Clayton as unique in many ways, he certainly contributes the the unique sound of U2 by keeping an uncomplicated solid foundation laid down whilst he gets painted over with whatever the Edge is doing. It's a sound that's getting ripped off in the charts still. What else do you need a bass player to do if not to provide you with something solid in the low end? Adam Clayton has absolutely nailed in almost every respect, and earned a small fortune doing it.
 12.
Biased nonsense.
Was rather thinking the same thing!
 13. When we go away to Sweden it's practically encouraged at outdoor festivals. I won't ever get battered in any case and to be totally honest it accounts for a tiny proportion of my gigging calendar.
 14. How to play with a pick, I count Macca, Carol Kaye, Joe Osborn and Anthony Jackson responsible for really opening my mind! Pino opened my mind to playing out of A through to C or even D on the E string higher up the neck, to make for nice access to more melodic passages on the D and G string without drastically shifting position. Jamerson taught me how to nice it is to play out of F using open strings as stepping stones to get to places, Chuck Rainey did this too and took it even further really, using open notes outside of the key and relying on the listener to have a forgiving ear.
 15.
It all starts with your hands.
+1, that's a lot of what I believe too.
 16. I love my Stingray 5, it fills out a surprising amount and is plenty authoritative, I should imagine for metal playing it would suit very much.
 17.
My thoughts would be that you aren't in need of an effect for this. It would be better to develop bass lines that support the song and fill any holes your guitarist can't cover (if indeed the holes need filling - sometimes less is more).
Agreed with this. Check out Pino Palladino playing in the John Mayer Trio with Steve Jordan on kit if you've not seen them already. He has a way of really holding together everything between the drums and Mayer's screaming lead parts that would make you think he's everywhere at once but without crowding the place sonically. I should imagine in your position this could potentially be a lot of fun!
 18.
Fodera and Class D (tc electronic, epifani etc.) Pretty much all the bass virtuoso's in fusion are using this setup.
I don't know if it counts when those kinds of people will be paid (or at least get for free) the class-D's!
 19.
Well, they don't have songwriting credits on any of their output, which is a pretty big clue...
Recently heard an interview with them saying that they've not had involvement in any writing yet but plan to. That's nothing new, no one at Motown did for example, but then I guess the craft was a million times better. Subjective though I suppose, as far as them being the hardest working band in the UK, it is of course a totally mad statement set to infuriate almost every independent and hard-working group of musicians that still toil and slave around the country in a beaten up Transit and less than 30p in their pocket.
 20.
Years ago when Tony (the man Pino is doing this session for) lived in Belgium I got a call to do a gig with him so I had to learn all the Pino-licks from the excellent live cd "Naked Flame". I did my best but I got fired :-) (I heard an excuse that I was unable to give energy on stage because I combined gigs with a daytime job... maybe I would have preferred that I just wasn't good enough, there's nothing wrong with saying the truth, I can handle it :-)).
Humbling story, seems a shame in some ways as you're obviously established enough as a player to get the call, you'd think that if they were after a Pino clone then they should have simply phoned a Pino clone!
 21.
They hate him over on TB
They hate everything over on TB! Fortunately large quantities of the forum consist of hobbyists with a seemingly low interest in actual music, I'd like to think this forum is a bit better in this respect. I was joking of course in my last post, I know very little about his playing but he certainly has influenced a lot of people of a younger generation to pick up bass which as far as I'm concerned is a wonderful thing.
 22. Saw Derrick McKenzie posted this the other day, great stuff!
 23. Have to watch this later as I'm in work, but he's the king as far as I'm concerned. And what a guy!
 24.
He's not a master of his instrument. He might have some good stories to tell. That's not a masterclass.
Case closed then.
