  1. Nice Jazz Bass! Slab body?
  2. This is an interesting discussion. For me, it depends on the gig…rock/pop/country= Jazz bass…nice but not irreplaceable. Jazz or pit work=fretted + fretless 5…nicer and hard to replace. I am not very picky about how a bass looks, but am obsessive about how it feels and sounds in the appropriate context. I guess the other thing worth mentioning…I know quite a few US military bassist, and they are playing top-drawer kit, both because they can and also because they need to be really flexible across a wide range of groups and styles. If I was in that situation, I’d like a really expensive bass as well.
  3. From last weekend....basic setup in a small room.... The Last Time video.MOV
  4. For me, the original post seemed to imply a lack of creativity when reading music. I think that, if I’m reading something I know, or don’t really have to struggle with too much, I use the music to express emotions. You kinda just forget the printed music is there.
  5. I think this certainly applies to sight reading, but would disagree in general. I like to believe that I can play with lots of expression and emotion with sheet music in front of me.
  6. Me too…
  7. Having owned and gigged pre-CBS p and j basses, I think the korean jazz 24 I recently picked up sounds and plays better and actually sounds better for rock than my MPV. Lots less expensive though…
  8. Played Fulborn Sport and Social club with our old guy rock band, Dirty Hands. Played pretty well for my third gig…first one without any notes. Interesting crowd…most avoided the cover charge in the hall by sitting next door in the bar, but those in attendance had a good time! First time with this rig…24 fret jazz bass, dual showman head with 4 x12’s. Got a great sound.

Through Body stringing, High Mass Bridge, 24 Frets, and a great neck...so far, so good. There is quite a bit of negative feedback regarding the preamp...we shall see...

I am rapidly falling in love with this for pop and rock…anyone else have one of these?
  14. For me, different gigs call for different tools. I use the 5’s, both fretted and fretless for jazz and other note-heavy music, but am currently liking the simplicity of a 4 string fretted Jazz for the rock band. ,
  15. Read pretty well in both bass and treble clef.
  16. I just aquired this bass…lovely neck. The push/pull volume pot needs replacing (push for active/ pull for passive, I think) Is that just a standard 250K pot?
  17. Probably nothing to you, but someone else may value that manufacture year. You are both entitled to your opinion.
  18. I don’t believe we have the perspective to predict this trend. In the 80’s, I unloaded several “classic” basses because, at that time, they were just old. Now, I wish I had all of them. Right now, I am planning to use a nice Jazz that I stumbled across instead of my fancy boutique bass for the pub band…it just seems to fit better. Value will always be in the eye of the beholder.
  19. After making the transition from 4 to 5 strings, and having had a chance to play a bunch of other 5’s, I would say that neck feel and balance are the most important considerations. After that, a lot of 5’s just don’t have a good low B string. Some sound bad below the 5th fret, and some get fuzzy above the 7th. These things will drive you crazy if they are not right. Think about what you can live with. My fretless Spector is wonderful, strung with low tension flats. However, the B sounds very tubby below the fifth fret. I work around it. I am not sure you can find a perfect bass for all styles in your price range, but certainly, don’t buy anything based on someone’s recommendation alone. You have to play them.
  20. How rare is that Performer? I have never seen one in the wild…
  21. Certainly wasn’t my intention…
  22. Yup…I ran into the same issue here…too bad, really
  23. Love AATW and western swing! I saw them twice in Dallas years ago. Wish there was a way to perform this amazing music here..,
  24. I have enjoyed his videos for some time. Not my thing, but I really can appreciate the technical brilliance.
